So my sister is going to the police academy, and I would like to buy her a knife she can carry on duty when she graduates I was wondering from any LEO's out there had any recommendations, I was leaning towards a Benchmade Contego as I own one myself and really like the design/glass breaker. Any recommendations on blade styles or PE vs SE vs CE would be appreciated too. Thx!

How about the Benchmade Triage. It has the glass breaker and a strap cutter. Sounds like a first responder kinda blade to me.

Anything with a spydie hole for opening. Easier to open when wearing gloves. I would pick a delica or endura.

If the carbide tip glass breaker is a must, there is also the Spyderco ASSIST.

It has the cobra hood for extra easy opening even with gloves and has a very effective edge for freeing trapped citizens when they cant disengage their seat belts.

Tip of blade is blunt, so as to avoid those pesky law suits from folks being stabbed - people tend to flail around a bit when trapped in burning cars by their seat belts.

Emerson makes a Police Utility Knife fixed blade. Their folders are nice too.

Kabar TDI....the smaller size is preferred by gals, sits nice Behind duty belt. Up here in Mid-Michigan our Cops don't have much use for knives as you SEE televised they just shoot ya Dead!!!! No charges Filed-end of Story!
Be Safe out there....

Hi. The police one website when discussing duty knives recommends a fully serrated spyderco endura or delica. The reasoning being they were/are cheaper to replace, easy to carry/conceal, easy to open. The serrations guaranteed an edge and they tend to get lost long before they need a sharpen. Seemed well reasoned.
I expect an LEO will be along soon with suggestions.

Good luck to your Sister, hope she keeps safe. And good job as her brother.

Just lost mine. Miss her a lot.

Another vote for a serrated Spyderco. Endura or one of the rescue style knives. If your sister isn't a real knife enthusiast, the serrations will work better than plain edge. They cut longer between sharpenings. Longer Endura beats shorter Delica for serrated because more length for draw cuts, where serrations excel. The round hole opener is super reliable, too.

I carry a Contego on duty. My only reservation is it might be a large knife if she has small hands. The Spyderco Police G3 is still a large knife, but a little sleeker and lighter than the Contego. I keep wanting to pick one up for myself, only problem is I have a perfectly adequate Contego.

Dont underestimate the utility of a good multitool on duty also. I carry a Leatherman Wave in a pouch on my belt. I use it all the time. I am constantly needing tools for stranded motorist or making adjustments to my bicycle at work.

Most of the guys I work with carry a Kershaw Blur or something similar. Reason being its a good value for the money and its available at the local sporting good shops. Chances are any knife you buy her will not make it to retirement. I have lost a half dozen knives in the 12 years I have worked at the police department. Knives are easily lost in LE work.

As a former LEO i would recommend the Spyderco Endura. Nice, lightweight, and easy to replace when broken/Lost. I would suggest to wear it in het left front pocket, so she can get at it with her left hand.
If she needs a rescue blade i would say the Assist. I also would like to recommend a multitool.

This is great, but get her the "Lone Wolf Distributors" version Endura which also has the waved feature. My SWAT sil loves it. Keep it light; they carry lots of stuff on the belt already. Even has a built-in Glock tool. Excellent folder.

Thanks for the recommendations guys! I didn't think about the serrations, but I think thats a great idea as she is totally not a knife person and I can't picture her ever sharpening one lol!

This is a very good suggestion and similar to the one I was going to make.

I know a few cops who carry a waved endura in the left pocket. People like cops do have to count their ounces when considering all the things they have on their person. Endura would be a fantastic option.
