Recommendation: What knofe to buy police academy graduate

Hmmmm the multi too seems like a great idea too. Maybe I'll just go for a fully serrated Endura and get her a Leatherman Wave too! I know I'm probably gonna wind up buying her a bunch of other stuff she needs for work, but this is what I'm going to present her with right after graduation

I'd recommend the Kabar TDI for weak side carry, behind the spare magazine pouches, in addition to any other knife.
This would be primarily a defensive knife for a gun grab attempt.
Strong side I prefer a waved, or assisted opening folder. Like most people, she may have to try a few knives to see what she's comfortable with.

I don't know if the Kabar TDI is a good choice to carry on her belt. The female hips tend to cant the tools you carry on your belt inwards. Having the handle sticking out could mean that the handle pokes in her belly. I also don't like the fact that the TDi has no retention on it, so a Bad Guy can grab it and use it against her. A clipped knife in her pants is more covered up, and less prone to a grab. But also slower to deploy. She will need the knife way more for mundane tasks then as a gun grab option. That's why the multitool is handy. The multitool is also the prefered way to cut flexi cuffs. Tell her not to try to cut them with the knife. Tried it once with my knife and it caused a small cut on the suspects wrist.

Hi. The police one website when discussing duty knives recommends a fully serrated spyderco endura or delica. The reasoning being they were/are cheaper to replace, easy to carry/conceal, easy to open. The serrations guaranteed an edge and they tend to get lost long before they need a sharpen. Seemed well reasoned.
I expect an LEO will be along soon with suggestions.

Good luck to your Sister, hope she keeps safe. And good job as her brother.

Just lost mine. Miss her a lot.

Dad is leo he doesn't Edc except on duty. He said he had a full serrated and a benchmade auto. The serrated got no use the auto got very little. I just talked to him he said in cases that glass breaker is needed it's faster to find a rock than to try and remember what knife has a glass breaker if you have multiple or to remember knife has one bwcUse you don't practice with glass breaker so you'll forget it's there. He recommends a benchmade auto knife if they're legal or a barrage because he said he carried Manual opening knife but he prefers the guarantee of it being open that the case your finger doesn't push the stud far enough

I like the Contego, the knifeworks exclusive in blue and black g10, it would be a nice graduation present, especially with a nice personlized engraving, (blue being the official police color; boys in blue, thin blue line, etc.) But might be a tad big for an on duty edc with all the other gear...

For edc she would likely be much better served with a Leatherman Charge or OHT, and a Mini American Lawman (cold Steel),
unless she has manly/large hands, then maybe consider something over 3.5"+ for edc.

Anything with a spydie hole for opening. Easier to open when wearing gloves. I would pick a delica or endura.
Having carried an delica for many years OTJ i would highly recommend this or one of the similarly sized Spydercos or the Police. Cut a few seatbelts, used the blade spine for all kinds of scraping and prying tasks..
