Recon 1, in MagnaCut

Any updates, kreole, or has anyone else had the same problem ?
I haven't been carrying it to be honest. As the summer gets hotter I'll switch back from the XHP spearpoint, but the Taiwan is so much nicer I don't really have the mind to carry the MC right now (even if it didn't have the ticking time bomb lock bar issue). I will definitely update the thread as I carry it.

I did notice though when buying more waves from snaggletooth that they sell a backspacer for Recon 1s that they make as well, so I bought one of those to try next if it breaks again. They're fairly priced I'd say.

From my end, no updates. I just carry the XHP one when I want a Recon 1. A big draw of the Recon 1 (and other Cold Steels) for me is it being a foolproof, do anything knife, so the issue kind of killed it for me.

I haven't seen any other reports of the bar breaking though, so maybe it's a one off? Or was the FB post you mentioned also a broken tension bar?

Edit: FWIW GSM also never contacted me about my warranty claim.

that's some super bs by gsm.....that they didn't even try to contact you.

wonder if someone showed youre issue on thefacebook, or if it is a second case....now I am curious.......

Well I said I'd update when I had one. I rotated back and forth between the new carbon fiber Recon 1 and this MC Italian version by the weather. Less than a week switching off, and this one died again. Same place. This was the thicker lock bar. Oh well. Both of my Taiwan made ones are fine anyway. Can't figure out where I put the new backspacer I bought to try also after "cleaning and organizing" awhile ago 🤣

Disheartening... try thinner spring next I'd say

It seems like a lot of extra cost to get an upgrade to Magnacut from already excellent S35VN. The clip point version is available for $99.88 at [redacted]. Maybe for a collector who has every version of the Recon 1 imaginable it's worth it.

Its about an extra $100 if you get it on sale. Plus you can get it uncoated, if that matters to you. I've bought a set of G10 scales for $100. Just about everything in this hobby is over priced. I like the M1 and the standard Recon 1. I have several standard versions but only one M1 (for now).

It seems like many brands are overpriced. Maybe my income isn t keeping up with inflation. Or knife inflation in particular.

I ve been thinking for a while that the price premium for Magnacut is overblown. Maybe this happened when m390 first came out. I don t recall. Does Magnacut steel on a knife model cost the producer $100 than the previous version, or is this marketing? Not trying to be blasphemous, but maybe my wallet can t accommodate this hobby like it used to.

It's worse when you try to fill up your truck or grocery cart.

I'll be 100% real - it's not worth it. Here in Europe it's double the price of S35VN version, and S35VN version still has fit and finish that's leagues ahead of MagnaCut version... not to mention better coating too. And you wouldn't even notice steel performance differences in day to day use...

Magnacut over S35VN might be worth it if it's exposed to an above average corrosive environment.

When Magnacut was first coming out, Larrin said it should cost about the same as other powdered metallurgy steels. My comment was that the knifemakers would take advantage of it and charge us more. And, here we are. Watch what happens when MagnaMax hits and catches on.
