Recon 1, in MagnaCut

Triad Cold Steels and have never had a spring break (actually I've never had a spring break on any back lock
Me neither ! 😎 :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Used some pretty hard . Many opening and closing cycles . Hard and fast wave opening or shake down / gravity type opening

Never broke anything on a Tri-ad folder . Had to tighten up the pivots on a few I used for throwing , is all .

Did hear about failures on early Swift models . Improper tempering of the weird "wishbone" AO spring . They fixed that problem , I believe .

It seems that almost every single person has an issue with Recon M1...

I woke up to texts of my friend that aside from being gritty and uncentered (both, blade and even lock bar) - it's becoming more difficult to open and close. He now has to do both with 2 hands.

got it today...also has super gritty action. Italian makers can't seem to put consistent good and sharp bevels on knives. other than that seems okay.......

also this one is closer to Taiwan made blade size and length. hair shorter bit less wide...

I can't take a good pic to show it, but its much closer than the coated blade magnacut italian version I have.

So...now you gonna work that spring , couple of hundred times a day ? 🥵

See if it breaks before your return window closes .

I'm already using it...but I don't fidget opens close. so if it breaks I'll report it...but im not gonna speed it up just cause.

Self admitted fidgeter here, at least until a knife is broken in and then I leave it alone. This one is doing fine so far with more openings than either of the previous two lock springs had before they broke, so I'm hopeful the backspacer mod fixed the issue. The other two were fine until they weren't though, so we'll see.

Loving that satin one. That's the way to go. The coating definitely is not the old aus8 Cold Steel coating, but it's no Taiwan dlc either. Here's mine now with a decent amount of cardboard cut up this weekend

Dang it, totally jinxed it. It started to get soft just a minute ago. Before it broke I popped it open, and it hasn't cracked, but it does have the extra bend the others got. All three got a bend right where it meets the backspacer. Guess I'll try the thicker spring bar this time.

I can't remember, you've flagged cold steel on this issue already, right? maybe its just a bad batch of knives and they all fail after couple hundred cycles?

Yeah I filled out a warranty claim on May 14. The email I got said to wait for them to accept the claim before sending the knife on. Nothing since then. That seems to match up with the other experiences with GSM's "warranty" :/. Once I waited a bit without a reply, I modified the backspacer I figured that was that. I am hoping it's something I can figure out to save this one and also that it's just a one off or a bad batch as you say, because I want a satin one eventually.

Here's the original, next replacement below that, and the one I just took out below that. A bit hard to see but the last is just slightly bent. It has the same feel as right before the others totally gave out.

I just tried filing a bit more curve into the portion below it. See if that works combined with the thicker lock spring. Maybe it needs a bit more ramp above the pin so that the transition out of the backspacer is more linear/smooth (?). I think I also won't cycle this one on repeat even if I'm curious to speed up seeing if it will meet the same fate.

this whole thing is super disappointing to me. I'm almost hoping its just a bad batch out of Italy. your Taiwan has held up to same use. so has to be something with production from Italy. cant just be bad spring as you've replaced it couple times. guess we'll see if softening the angles and beefing up the spring works as you use it......

I'd do different approach and put thinner spring in there. Thicker metal is more likely to bend with sharp turns/bends while thinner spring will have more space and will make less of sharp angle when bending.

Super disappointing in any case...
