REI G10 Grip on Sale

Just to get back to the original REI issue for a moment.... :p

Got mine today and super impressed with them. What a cool knife! Love the green and black scales and extra heft they add to the piece.

And for those who feel BM's QC has slipped: BOTH of these are perfect, with centered blades, great even edge bevels, and as sharp as anything. Will snap a group pic with my other limited run Grips as soon as I get a moment.

Great job Benchmade! Let's see more limited runs.... ]

Quick snaps of a damn near perfect pocket knife!

Amen, brother...

every one of my LE's have also been flawless, I wish BM would add different G10 designs to the grip custom options, THAT would be awesome!

Agreed.... however, the flip side is it would take away from the awesomeness of these limited runs. Now if they started messing around with different steels AND G10 scales... ay caramba!

Benchmade should definitely add an option on their build your own custom knife pages for G10 scales. To differentiate this from their exclusive models (like the REI Griptilian) and limited editions (like the recent 551BK-LE Griptilian) they should not offer the same colors and anodized barrel spacers on the custom pages. Perhaps only offer black or solid colors of G10 and black barrel spacers when building a custom knife and offer the layered G10 and colored barrel spacers on their exclusive and limited editions.

It amazes me how many people have commented on this forum and the BM site forum that they want to be able to buy a regular / web-site customized Griptilian & Mini-Griptilian knife with G10 scales vs the cheap-feeling Valox and Benchmade has not done that. In my opinion the best way to grow your business and increase customer loyalty is to sell what they are telling you they want to buy.

Way ahead of ya man, I started a thread about this very thing not long ago: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1160475-G10-Griptilian-when

The thing is, BF is a relatively small segment of the market and by and large we are willing to spend more than most on knives. Perhaps it simply wouldnt be cost effective for them to introduce the option just to satisfy the small but vocal market on BF and the like? I really dont know. Consider that it costs $160 to build a custom Grip with S30V. Now say that would be the cost to create one with G10 scales. Would people go for it? I think its an interesting question.

It would seem they would, judging by how many purchase Wilkins, Cuscadi, etc etc... perhaps BM will take note and start offering the option for their Build a Custom Grip service. If so, what form would they take? Would they be smooth, rough, grooved? Or just G-10 versions of the Noryl GTX scales? Even more exciting, will they start offering M390 and M4 as options for the steel nuts? The sky is the limit. I think we just have to keep asking and hopefully one day they will cave just to shut us up.:D

ya know what they say, the squeaky wheel gets the grease!

Excellent points too, I suppose it would be cost prohibitive to make individual scales though, though they could offer us a few more steels at least... that's something the custom makers thus far are unable to provide

Hey Guys, I hate to rain on the parade, but I was really disappointed with the quality control on my REI grip. The blade centering is the worst I've ever seen on any knife that I've purchased (from any manufacturer). I bought a regular 551 last year that was way better in both blade centering and in the axis lock action. I also bought both a 940 and a 943 recently. The 940 was terrible (not sharp, lots of blade play that couldn't be adjusted out), and the 943 was perfect - smooth action, tight lockup, super sharp.

I realize that I can fix most of these items, but I really don't think that I should have to adjust a $175 knife out of the box. I know a lot of people buy knives that are a lot more expensive, but the REI grip is an expensive knife for me. I really think that Benchmade could do a lot better by focusing on quality control. A properly adjusted axis lock is way cool, and paired with a razor sharp blade, it could hook a potential customer for life. Sorry to rant, but it might be worth checking out a knife in store if you're concerned with quality level on the individual piece.

The premium you pay for the G10, S30V and anodized backspacers do not increase the overall F&F of the knife.

I traded my first one for a watch, so I've had to order another. Still available from their online site for $140 after the 20% off coupon.

This REI Grip really got my attention with this thread. A few days ago it showed as back ordered, but showed up today as in stock. If only the cost wasn't $175 I would jump on it - just a bit too much. Such a shame as I would really like to own one!

keep a sharp eye on this thread, the next time a coupon code is good, I'm sure someone will post it

just checked rei, if you sign up for gearmail emails, they'll give you 15% off, go get 'em!

Oh - thanks for that! I just took a look and was ready to buy it with the 15% off, but the 15% off coupon is only good for REI branded items. Oh well - I'll just keep checking this thread as you said above.
