Reinhardt Teaser

I have owned, used and handled kukhris, some old some new,in a bewildering assortment of sizes, handle designs, blade designs and thicknesses.....Some work better than others...... I freaking love them..... The good ones are awesome in their ability to project raw brute force..... Hank's design is certainly among the very best....... I have never handled a better one.... In a very real sense the Kukhri is to Nepal what the Bowie is to the U.S....... A use it for everything blade.....

Thanks, I really enjoy hearing your opinions and experiences. By chance could you tell me if you've handled a Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri, and if so what do you think?

funny - E and I were actually talking about those over dinner Saturday night shortly before he posted the above.
I have both versions in CarbonV and the biggest problem with them is just how grippy the textured kraton handles are - unless you're wearing gloves, you will have hot spots if you're using it for any length of time.

Those Cold Steel kukri are <not my favorite>. The handles are terrible, and they just don't chop particularly well. I had a chance to chop with one at Dan Keffeler's, and then with one of his pieces and the difference was night and day. It was really uncomfortable and just harder to chop with.

On another note, how many of you are planning on getting two of these?

-edit- I decided to tone down my bad-mouthing.

Isn't that what ranger bands are for?

Khukuri do come in all sizes and thicknesses-my older ones are much leaner than modern ones.
Any khuk will behead "stuff" given good technique and a sharp edge...

In all honesty, I would choose my LTC for any slicing job. It bites deeper in everything I've tried when compared to much heavier khuks, including hard wood. It is light saber-ish and must be used with caution, as one of my relatives discovered the hard way!

JDK1,

I love my Cold Steel LTC too..lol I have owned a few, broke one purely abusing it. Throwing a kuk is abuse imho ..lol but I still love em, cause it was my own fault that my first one broke.

I was wondering how you could break one, but throwing makes sense. I have beat my LTC like a borrowed mule and it's still going strong so I have high hopes for this RBK.

Maybe, but for what the CS Gurka Kukri costs I'm sure most people expect it to have a proper handle out of the box.

I've always found the handle pretty good, maybe not ideal, but I haven't experienced blisters or had any loosening. The rubber wouldn't be ideal for extended chopping, but in my use it's been comfortable and offers a lot of security. Being able to use gloves is a plus and most traditional khuks are plum lousy in gloved hands. That being said, I'd really like an option other than rubber. That may be what pushes this RBK into first place. I don't have a Becker, so I can't say, but people seem to like the handles so I'm excited to try it out. Take care.

I will agree that the Cold Steel handle material and texture leave something to be desired, but the shape is great. I just wrap my handles in some of the fabric tape that only sticks to itself.
The Becker handles, especially on a larger blade really shine.

To his and to BiggHoss, I find it good too, though with a bit of Wilson Ultra Wrap it's AWESOME.
