I will also start a thread for the benefit auction.

WTF? That is terrible news. Rene was a great guy who was a big inspiration for all knifemakers lucky enough to spend time with him. Always had a kind and encouraging word when looking at my knives, even when they weren't much to look at. He will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace. Rick

Mike,

That is a regretful tragady. I will surely miss Rene, as will many many others.

My condolences to his family and loved ones.

Just got off the phone with Mace about this... I met Rene at IG's Hammer-In last spring. Really nice guy, and his work showed incredible talent -- truly an inspiration for someone like me, just getting started.

42 is WAAAAAAYYYYYYYY too young. I'm sorry he's gone, and I wish I got to know him better. Deepest feelings going out to his...

i just heard about it a couple of hours ago from indian george. i wish i had gotten to know him from what ive heard about him. any news on funeral and stuff. ill cntribute as much as i can afford towards the costs. it might not be much but it will help and will be better than nothing. look on the bright side, he can now make knives pain free. i hope the best for his loved ones and family. may he rest in peace.

WHOA....terrible news. He was a very very nice guy. The few times I met him, he was a real class act. He will surely be missed.

Man that really is too sad. Rene was a great guy, always full of fun and always had an encouraging word for newbies like me. His presence will be missed. It will be tough not to see him holding court at the shows!

I met Rene in Marlboro a few years back. All of his knives were sold and he was selling Hideaways and some Eggerling damascus billetts. He was there to share his joy and it showed.

Prayers sent for his family.

I couldn't say enough about Rene if I had all the space here. He helped me out alot in knife-making and just keeping my sanity at times. Rene was always great with advice, comments and a good belly laugh when you needed it. I can't think of anyone who crossed his path that doesn't owe him something....and I don't mean material wise. Anyone who knew Rene, knows what I mean. You will be missed my friend. I'm sure wherever you are you've got a group around you laughing their butts off.

All our best!

The more I think about this the more upset I'm getting.:( I was talking with him yesterday afternoon and was suposed to call him back last night and I just got caught up with working in the shop I didn't remember till it was to late to call.
He sounded his usual self and when I asked how he was feeling he said he was doin just fine...
I just can't belive it.
R.I.P. Rene
You will be missed.
Mace

How increadibly sad =( Unfortunately I didnt have the pleasure of getting to know him, but the one time that I met him, in Marlboro at an NCCA show, we talked for quite a bit and he was very nice and helpfull with suggestions to myself, as a new maker.

My heart goes out to his family.

It saddens me to hear about this. Rene was one of those great poeple that that I always looked forward to seeing, always had a smile on his face and given a few seconds he'd get you smiling too. I hope your finding it better on the otherside.

Rene was on this forum about the same time I joined in 1999. He was a great man with a big heart. He will be missed. Rest in Peace Rene
