Renewed my permit after letting lapse for the last 5 years, I live in a gun friendly state in a rural area where everyone carries, so I figured like gettin' an inspection sticker for you car I should be current on my CCW permit, (saves a lot of explainin' later.

Anyways, livin' in a rural area I've always had a handgun on me or a rifle around out on the property, with the permit I always tended to carry mostly when we were out as a family.

Now with my daughter goin' off to college soon and the Mrs. spendin' more time at home, I find myself alone and about more often than not.

Now I'm gettin' to my point, just wait, when I was younger I carried for my family's protection, now I'm older and we're not out together as much as we used to be, why do I carry?

I know I can take care of myself, I grew up in the streets, I may be a little slower but I'm a lot smarter than I was back then, so why did I renew? Was it just to conform? Be like the legal masses, I could've spent the $30 on somethin' else.

BTW my EDC is a Taurus PT111.

Why and what do you carry?

You understand why. Usually those who ask will never understand.
and what do you carry?
Always: Seecamp .32ACP in a Thad Rybka pocket holster.

Almost always: either a S&W 340PD .357 scandium/titanium revolver or a Keltec P11 9mm, both in Jerry Ahern pocket holsters.

Sometimes, in cold, jacket wearing weather: Kimber Ultra CDP Elite II .45ACP in a Kramer horsehide holster.

I keep a CCW permit because I can't get the bad guys to send me a copy of their schedules in advance. I carried 35 years and only had to draw once, never had to fire. That one day paid for all the trouble.
I always say that guns are like condoms, when you don't need them, you don't need them at all, but when you need them, that's what you need, and nothing is going to substitute for it.
EDC Glock 36, Glock 30, and Ruger LCP

i edc a kahr PM9 or occasionally a kahr P9 or glock 33, just about always one of the 3.

why? for SD of course.

when a bud of mine and his girlfriend were abducted and murdered in '78 or '79 when i had 1st gotten outta high school it taught me that there were bad folks in this world. my bud& his girlfriends murder was one of the ones henry lee lucas copped to then recanted, no one ever was charged with it FWIW. i used to work with his mom and she was totally destroyed by the incident, it was her only son and his dad/her husband had died in vietnam, he was a pilot. just a tragedy for sure............

they were abducted in round rock TX when they had car problems and its assumed they accepted a ride from someone, he was found ~ 30 miles from the car, shot numerous (as in 12 or 13 times with a .22LR) she was found ~ 100 miles from the car raped and shot numerous times, i have never traveled without a gun since that day, be it legal or not.

still dont like to talk about it, have never posted about it before and dont know why i am this morning, suppose its good to talk about it occasionally, and to let folks know, there are bad people out there.............

What: Glock 17. I have carried a concealed firearm here in South Africa almost every day since my 18th birthday.....I am now 43

Why: Political strife followed by a low grade civil war followed by an increase in crime to one of the highest levels in the world.......

Smith and Wesson 325PD worn strong side in a Don Hum J.I.T., Colt Detective Special worn weakside cross draw in the same Hume Holster, and a Kel-Tec PF-9 either in pocket or in a Kramer Confidential Shirt. I also carry 2 reload for each revolver and 1 extra mag for the hideout.

If I choose to carry a semiauto for a main it is a H&K P-7 backed up with the PF-9 and likely the little Colt as well.

Rock Island Armory Tactical in a Comp-Tac C-Tac slide.

Why? Mostly because it's my right and responsibility to protect myself. Partially because my belt and jeans have been getting looser lately, and a 1911 IWB helps take up the slack (I hate to buy new jeans.)

I carry so that I will have some tools to enhance a very, very bad day.

Always, a Keltec P32, and usually a Glock of some flavor or other, usually a Glock 30 or 36.

I carry a S&W 686 snubby(on the ankle in the winter,in the waistband in the summer)

Why?Because I have the RIGHT to defend myself in this great country. Also,It's very easily concealable & I can switch between .38 & .357 & I'm so used to shooting it(at the range),I've gotten pretty good with it.

I also have a 4" barrel 686(the one in my sig) which doesn't get carried much(maybe heavy coat in dead of winter),but is a little more accurate.

I got a couple Colt SA revolvers(.45LC) I like to have fun at the range with from time to time, but never carry.

The only semi-auto I own is a Customized Kimber 1911 that was a gift.I've yet to shoot it.I'm trying to preserve it's value, for that extra rainy day.Still don't know if I could ever sell it though.

[edited to add]When I shoot a .357magnum round through that 2" snubby, the flash is so great,I'm partially blinded.I've learned how to counter this,by squinting a little.

My dad gave me a pistol when I left home and I carried it for years after that but its so old and outdated I stopped doing so in the later 80s. Unlike knives, where I sometimes don't often know what one I'll have on me from day to day, the concealed carry choice is pretty much predictable. Its most always my Glock 36. Occasionally when I'm jacketed I'll carry the Glock 17 which is actually my favorite but its so big and certainly the heaviest of the two mentioned. My digital scale puts that one loaded fully for 17 plus 1 in the chamber of Winchester silver tips to 2 pounds and .07 ounces. The G36 is 1 pound 7 ounces though so its not a lot of difference but enough and its smaller in footprint overall. If I go with the factory clip on that 36 instead of the plus two ones I bought for it I can bring it down a notch more in weight for two less 45 caps but I rarely do that.

I used to carry my 32 H&R Mag. AirLite ti revolver but the wife likes that one so much I gave it to her. She'll actually carry that one and its fairly reliable and brainless with no tricky buttons or gadgets to confuse her so it worked out.

Noted gunwriter John Farnam once quoted Tom Givens, "I carry a gun so I can shoot people! Under some circumstances, some people need to be shot, dead, on the spot!"

Ans. to Question #2 - Glock or S&W revolver.

I carry a Glock 10mm model 20.

Why? Because it's like packing a 16 shot .41 magnum.

Been carrying for years.. I carry because there are a lot of scumbags that have no respect for other peoples lives..
If the situation arises, It increases my odds of getting to go home that day..

I carried various versions of 1911's for years and now carry a Glock 36.

The problem with a lot of people that do carry is they don't train or practice.

I used to carry various flavors of Glock, 1911, revolver, etc., always IWB. In the past several years its been almost exclusively a S&W 442 in a pocket holster. I just got tired of carrying something the size of a toaster oven inside my waistband, always making sure that my shirt didn't jump up to reveal it. A small revolver in the pocket is less firepower, but still sufficient I believe to dissuade someone from being unfriendly towards me. I can tuck my shirt in, bend over and not worry about it, and have my hand on the gun without anyone knowing the difference. Plus, a revolver is dang reliable. Not the right choice for everyone, but the right choice for me.

I carry because I don't ever want to be in a situation where I need it and don't have it. The downside of carrying is almost non-existent, and the downside of not carrying can be very bad.

This is so true, there are so many people who shouldn't granted a permit to begin with, people who buy a gun, get a permit and through inexperience or stupidity either hurt or kill themselves or some innocent bystander.

I grew up with guns in the house, I was a teenage Competition Sharpshooter for my Township, avid Hunter and all around gun fan.

I knew what a gun could do, I'd had friends who commited suicide,(with a gun) friends who stupidly played with loaded guns their parents left in the house, resulting in another dead friend.

A person inexperienced in the handling of a gun is more of a danger to themselves and everyone around them.

CCW is not for everyone.

Glock 19. In states I am qualified and licensed for, and those with reciprocity. For all the usual reasons - and a very personal one that I treasure: because a foreign government, having satisfied itself with my qualifications and training, trusts me to be a responsible citizen and my own government doesn't.

I used to have a quote in my signiture line that said, "ask me why I own a gun and I'll ask you why you own a fire extinquisher" Same principle.
