Richard Rogers: Custom Knives

Hi Ken,

Great to see you too. Congrats again on the big win, it was well deserved.

Thanks for the kind words.

Take care,

Richard

Well, it seems I couldn't improve upon Richard's pictures...so now neither of us have done justice to his work, but here's what I was able to get a few minutes ago before the rain starts to come down...

this serpentine stockman is incredibly attractive!
I love the rounded bolsters - all these elegant curves :) I bet it rides nicely in the pocket and feels even better in the hand.

Thank you both. Richard is a true artist and the form is only (possibly) exceeded by function. The action and precision of his knives needs to be experienced to be appreciated.

Thanks, Marty. The problem is that the light plays havoc with the bolster making the rat tail groove seem like a superhighway when in fact it's much more subtle.

Of course the bright side is that I get to see the real thing in person. :p

Richard, It was a pleasure meeting you and your wife! Thanks for
chatting with me and Bret.

Hi guys,

Just finished hammering this one together.

Swing guard, mammoth ivory, 4 5/8" closed.

It gets mailed out to a friend tomorrow.

That's a nice one Richard! Mammoth looks great.. That one isn't
easy to make I'm sure. Not for the girls...;)

What a great knife, Richard! Nice choice of materials and forms. Very impressive!!
Is there anything you can't make??

I remember that "three-thick" fondly; mammoth also I believe!

Hi guys,

Getting started on a Horseman's knife.

First up is an awl. It's pictured on the pattern so you can see how it fits in the back of the knife.

Next is a partially done corkscrew. I still have to trim down the tang, and cut the tip down to the right length. The big hole on the back end is so I can hold it while I file the groove.

All the grooves and the threads on the awl are hand filed. I'll try and post pics as I get more parts made.

Thank you for posting your WIP! This is going to be a fun build to watch! The awl looks like it also works as a gimlet -- very cool!

I'm looking forward to this one too! Thanks for taking the time to share it with us, Richard.

Richard,

Really looking forward to seeing this one progress. Thanks for taking the time to take pictures and post. I know how that can slow things down.

Hey Ken. Everything slows me down. These were both the second attempts. The first ones were okay, but not juuuuust right. Working on the leather punch earlier this morning. Right now I'm off to move some cattle. Running out of water in the pasture they're in. Keeping my fingers crossed and hoping it starts raining. :)

Hi guys, I've been doing ranch stuff the last few weeks. Took time out to make a few test knives for the upcoming hunting season. I'm testing some different steels. Light green is Elmax, Black is D2, and Orange is CPM M4. The frame on all knives is 4 1/4". Blades were ground to .006" to .008" at the edge before sharpening. It will be interesting to see how they hold up. I've been carrying around a knife made from CPM M4 and it's an impressive steel, really holds an edge well.

Richard, did you do hardness testing on the different knives? They should all be superb cutters.
