Rick Hinderer's Modular Kuboton/Pen copied

Rick Hinderer is One of the Most Stand Up Guys I Know ! It is a Damn Shame this Guy would go to this Length . Rick and Lori Put in Long Hours to Make their Product the Best it can be . People like This Guy need to be Stopped !
Yuppers!! I am with you.

Knife Maker (Not the real kind): A person who counterfeits the knife designs of another and makes clones because the original makers knives are priced too high for his buddies or the wait is too long.

Knife design: A knife of any kind that this kind of Maker can produce with no effort and huge returns. The product of another's hard work and imagination that this kind of maker claims is "all his" and had no idea another Maker made the exact same thing!!

Knife making: Sitting on one's butt waiting for another maker to come up with a profitable design or product and then swoop in and have it made with your "Trademark" instead of the original maker who worked his butt off and then sell it for less than the real Maker could charge.

Ethics: For this kind of Maker there is NO definition because the word does not exist in their vocabulary. Many of this kind Maker mistake the word for an obscenity.

Memory lapse: For this kind of Maker memory lapse is the claim that an honest mistake has been made, over and over and over again in that he forgot, did not know, or never knew that someone else makes a design with such glaring similarities that the words "impossible coincidence" instantly comes to mind, especially when it has happened for the sixteenth time.

Honesty: The opposite of off-esty, the word off-esty having no meaning in their vocabulary just like the fact that the word HON-ESTY does not exist either.

Profit: Taking the property of another and sell it as your own (see theft)

Knife world: A large group of men and women who share a common love; knives and should not ever tolerate or buy from these types of "Makers" (see thieves)

Steel: A term used by a legitimate maker to describe the metal materials needed/used to make a knife blade. For the other type of maker the term steel means to take something not yours, sell it and keep all the money.
( see theft again)

Nicely put Wolfmann-

I think there should be something in there about HONOR but I feel in the end, you are right to omit this because this person has NONE.

"No honor among thieves" is I believe how the expression goes.

I'm thinking Rick's Modular Baton is patented or patent pending... That would mean a pretty hefty judgement/payment on the copycat's part... Sucks to be him.

Damn...just typed a LONG response...and my iPhone died. Ugh.

Anyway, I thought of buying one of SB's modded SAK's, once. Glad I didn't. I don't want ANY of my money going to thieves.

I've only been a member of the knife community for about 14 months, and I learned about Rick's work SHORTLY after diving into the hobby (Hell, I already own and carry an XM-18, and I know guys who've been waiting longer than I've been in the hobby just to find one at retail). I don't think ANYONE can be a knife person and NOT know who Rick Hinderer is. Hell...Strider and Zero Tolerance both use his "Lockbar Stabilizer," and if SB tries to say he's never heard of Strider, he is either severely retarded, or he thinks his customers are idiots.

Point is: SB has to have know of Rick and his work, thus his behavior is unacceptable, and should be punished. We can do that by informing everyone we know in this industry about his lack of character and scruples.

Maybe he believes that people overseas would rather buy cheap copies than pay to have the real deal shipped from across the pond, but we can probably make that more difficult as well.

I'd LOVE to see SB respond in this thread.

Can a person enforce a US patent in another Country? If so can Rick collect any type of Judgement if he sued this guy who is not from the USA?

Years ago I ran across the Swissbianco +B NeckAngel and thought it looked like a very utilitarian neck knife, but, I couldn't help thinking I'd seen it somewhere before...

...the original BK&T neck knife, aka the "Becker Necker" with a different handle!

I didn't think much of it at the time, two simplistic neck knife designs that resemble each other, no big deal.

HOWEVER...

Over the last several years I've noticed complaints on this and other knife related forums that some of Roger Remund's "original" designs were copies of other makers' work.

It wasn't until I'd heard rumors of him knocking off Peter Atwood's designs that I really took an interest in whether or not Swissbianco was thief. :thumbdn:

Decide for yourselves:

Page 3 of this PDF shows a knife obviously "inspired" by the Emerson LaGriffe:

This PDF shows knives obviously "inspired" Spyderco, Warren Thomas, and Hideaway Knives aka Frontsight:

More Swissbianco knives "inspired" by others' work in this dealer's galleries:

Knockoffs of Peter Atwood's tools:

Steel, Titanium, damascus, patterned, glow dot, same options Peter offers who'd a thunk it.

Now he's knocking off Hinderer's pens, I particularly like the black ones at the bottom of this page:

http://www.messerforum.net/showthread.php?t=57782

Which, by the way, look nothing like Rick's Extreme Duty Pen. :jerkit:

It's pretty obvious that many of Swissbianco's "original" designs can be directly linked to other maker's work, the Atwood and Hinderer knockoffs have convinced me that Roger is ethically challenged at the very least.

but his pens come in an otter box, not a pelican case.

some of those look like pretty good original designs, and of good quality. it seems the guy has some skill.

why copy other's designs? ill never get some people.

I see an AG Russell/CRKT Sting, a SAR SARBAT, a g10/steel laminate WT knife and a Fred Perrin La Griffe knockoff---I highly doubt he got Fred's permission for the knives.

EDIT: I'll PM Fred about this.

Bastidville from what I have seen. :D.

Great!!!

How do you say Patent Attorney?

Give em heck Rick!!! I am good for a few bucks towards your Lawyer/legal fees. It is time to hit these types where it hurts; the wallet......................:grumpy::mad::mad:

I may need that money, I think I will be contacted by a lawyer in accordance with a email I have received.

I kinda had a idea this would happen, but I felt the risk was worth it.

Thanks
Spencer

I know that due to possible litigation you may not be free to discuss what it is that you are referring to, but if you can clarify what you posted a little, it would be greatly appreciated.

Dont forget to add the Spyderco spot to that list from those "poison knives", it even has the same sheath retention lug :thumbdn:

It doesn't look like Rick's pen but he stole the idea of the attachments. Have you seen kubaton pen's with exchangeable attachments before, except Rick's? Rick makes kubaton pen's and other makers make kubaton pens. but Rick is the only one that makes MODULAR kubaton pens with exchangeable attachments.....but the SB bastard had to copy it....

Ripping off HAK and Brian Tighe's triple X dagger
