Ridiculous budget blade-4 dollar Ozark Trails folders, good blade-pic heavy

After a week of use, breaking down boxes, cutting misc. things here and there the knife seems to be just as sharp as when I started the week and is functioning fine.

Was out of town last week, and ran into a leftover display with maybe 30-40 of these left. Decided what the heck. My sample badly needed a sharpening, so that was done right away. The action is not super smooth, but for $3.87, I'd still call it a $20 knife now that it's sharp and I've tweaked the action a bit. Definitely worth having a few around in trunks of cars and such as a beater knife. I don't get to my local Wally's very often, but if they are still around when I do, I'll pick up a couple more. The tan G10-ish model is really the only style that interests me.

I picked one of the tan g10 models up today and it's way to tight to flip and trying to loosen it makes the other pivot screw spin as well so I can't loosen the action but I will say these are worth every penny.

I tore one down to see if I could put new scales on it. Destroyed the screws but did find that they use a form of locking product on all of them similar to locktite. I am going to try and use a soldering iron tip to heat the pivot screw and see if that breaks it loose. Lot of fun for cheap. Not a bad little flipper.

Bought 10 of the tan flippers after work and RC tested 3 of them on the flat of the blade on my Mitutoyo RC tester and they are all 56,57,56 on the C scale. The screws won't unscrew easy so I am trying a epoxy release trick with boiled water. Will let you know the results soon. So far the hardness of 3 of these are good and to tell you the truth the blades were centered when in the closed position. The plastic washers won't last but if I can figure out a good way to get them apart to replace them with bronze this will be a nice knife.

Well the boil trick works great! I can attest that this knife is well worth its money. If this knife was broken down into kit form it would sell for $30 to $40 bucks easy! The lock up so far is safe for a liner lock as far as I am concerned. Locks up tight and can be used very tough. As far as Walmart junk I think haters will be haters and buying U.S is buying U.S. All I know after being in the steel industry and seeing it all first hand after 20 years is that if you think the steel came from the U.S to make your U.S knife your probably 60% wrong!! Once it comes in as slabs it can be rolled and processed by a U.S company and be U.S steel. Than falls to cars, appliances, knives and tools. Everyone does it and it is washed by the last place that labels it. Hardly NOBODY that manufactures uses U.S crucible steel! Nobody! Look at the current steel market. It is the new way Global Business is done. Ozark Knives is here to stay and it is okay for this knife to be a good knife! Don't be a foreign snob because your steel probably didn't start at Crucible Steel!! Just washed to make you think it was. I know!!!

Hmmm...I thought these were 420J2. At those levels I'd be more inclined to think something like 5Cr.

Not familiar with Cr scale? My scale is set up for "B" and "C". Is Cr a softness scale set up as a durometer scale reading? 420stainless always reaches a "C" scale even if below 30.

Anyone else try out the classy looking little wood handled one ?
I got mine almost 2 months ago and it's definitely a 4$ knife :D ( these guys are probably the best available for the price )
definitely not bad for 4$ and I think it would be good to buy and customize with a wood burner to give as gifts.

Finally gave in (after seeing Jill's heartfelt endorsement).

BTW, the blue fiberglass one can be closed with no resistance from full open position unless you snap it open. That one is going back.

Tan G10 is at least as good as any $20 liner lock I've tried. I'll probably pick up a second one. Good timing as I'm getting a new Edge-Pro-like sharpening system.

Any other mods, perhaps orange RIT dyed scales?

I just picked up one of these also. As others have said, the lockup is really solid. The grind on mine is uneven, although it was decently sharp right out of the box. The blade is not even close to being centered when closed. Even so, it's a decent user. The flipper function works for me if I use a very hard wrist snap. Hopefully it will loosen up a bit.

I would like to remove the thumb stud. Has anybody tried that?

I've found some Ozark Trail products to be great values. I love their 150 & 200 lumen headlight. Mine are 2 years old & going strong.
