I always hear stories about cops flicking knives open and taking them because they're cited as gravity knives. Never thought it would happen to me.

Now I lost a dear companion and useful tool

:(

Anyone ever have this happen?

My condolences on your loss, Canadian knife laws allow for this type of government approved theft as well although there is some recourse if you can afford to spend the time and/or money. Hasn't happened to me yet, but I have thought about the possibility.

That sucks.. Happened to my brother in NYC. He asked a cop for directions and as he turned away the cop noticed a benchmade grip in his rear pocket. The cop called him on it and asked if he wanted to get arrested. Not worth the fight as he says. My brother went on his way knifeless. Gonner

The shitty part is that I just got it in the mail this very morning. Mods excuse my French. Man I loved that knife.

Yeah, how about a story? Cop probably flicked it, thought 'wow, this is a nice knife' and kept it.

I'd pursue it.

Story's personal.... Cop asked for my ID and when he saw the Satu told me to put it on the ground then kicked it away...... swiped it up and then decided to flick it open and keep it. Can't say I blame him. I'm lucky all he did was take it- could've been charged with a felony for a technical gravity knife

That's a shame. Better than jail though.

I suppose the same could happen here, but it's a different culture. I had a cop ask to see my illegal Ultratech a few weeks ago(auto is fine but DE isn't). I thought I'd lose it for sure, maybe even be cited or worse... He said he liked the two tone finish and advised me not to go stabbing folks with it because the DE would add a secondary charge to the assault/murder. Lol. Gotta love Texas.

That really sucks. Maybe there is a way you can get it back.

Hopefully Knife Rights can continue the fight to end these archaic laws, and reverse them.

Oh yeah, like he gave you a big break.
I like cops. I don't like New York cops. One state out of fifty isn't too bad. I just make sure I stay out of there.
Hard to tell the thieves from the good guys.

I am a bit rough on the NYPD, and realize there are good cops and bad cops, and cops that are upholding the laws on the books. I just wished they didn't look so happy when they uphold it. Maybe "Rudy" Giuliani should come back, and move out some of the libs. I don't think the cops would object.

CA gets alot heat on the forums, but honestly i would just carry a slipjoint if i was anywhere on the east..

Sorry for your loss..

Amen. Now if we could just get Whitmire to quit stalling and pass HB3884. I can't believe that a$$hat did what he did, and now it's another 2 frikkin years until it can "be heard" again.
OP - sorry about the Satu. Exactly how is the "gravity knife determination" made? If it's just flicking it open, damn near everything qualifies, and that's bunk.
Also, he kicked your brand new knife across the ground? What exactly were you in the process of doing? Simple traffic stop?

We have those laws here, so I just make sure I can't flick my knives open with inertia. And if I can't flick it open, no cop will be able to. Does not make for smooth deployment though :thumbdn: best locks for preventing flicking are lockbacks, Axis and of course slipjoints, anything with a ball detent sucks and of course bearing or bushing pivots are a no-no.

This was talked about awhile ago on GunTalk.. Anything you can do to open the knife with one hand is considered a gravity knife in NY. Spydie drops, inverted flicks, axis flicks would all be considered and ppl are being arrested for this..

They even had the Knife Rights guys on the show and talked about all the cases..

Glad you didn't end up in jail. Maybe that was a not so subtle way of telling you to be more subtle. ;)

Sorry for your loss.
Did you at least get a receipt for your confiscated item or is it a chance for a-hole cops to steal from citizens ?
