RIP Grayman Satu

Glad you didn't get arrested...of course if you didn't break the law in the first place you wouldn't have had this issue either. We don't like the laws, obviously, but until the law is changed it remains exactly that, the law; if you break it then you have to deal with the cost of doing so.

Story's personal.... Cop asked for my ID and when he saw the Satu told me to put it on the ground then kicked it away...... swiped it up and then decided to flick it open and keep it. Can't say I blame him. I'm lucky all he did was take it- could've been charged with a felony for a technical gravity knife

Glad you're out of trouble if out a nice knife. Well, don't they always say "don't do the crime if you can't do the time"?

Glad you didn't end up in jail. Maybe that was a not so subtle way of telling you to be more subtle. ;)

This....and....I gotta say, it is all in a)the LEO....and b)YOU!

The last time I had an...ahem...encounter with an LEO where I was charged with an offense, I had left a bar, after leaving a very arduous workday.....and I was carrying 5 knives. Was asked about that, and explained that I was in the outdoor industry, and coming from work....all knives were returned when I was released from custody.

IF they had a reason to keep them, like I was mouthing off.....I'm sure they would have disappeared. Bearing, tone and manner and courtesy prevail when dealing with LEO's. I had an encounter with a butthead of a deputy a few years back....that has been such the rare occasion though, and you do have to take the bad with the good.

Save up, get another one, and don't carry it unless you are AT work and need it there, or at home or tighten it up so hard that it barely opens, or ideally.....move out of NY....it sucks.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

CA gets alot heat on the forums, but honestly i would just carry a slipjoint if i was anywhere on the east..

Sorry for your loss..

If ya wanted....but i can carry legally any knife concealed or openly and any folding knife...be it auto, bali, any length blade, dagger, whatever except a ballistic. Most of the east isnt like ny and mass. Only certain states and all of them up north. Not in the south.

Any folders that you can flip open and lock with your wrist motion is illegal in canada - the twist is there's not limit of how many times it needs to take to flip it to get it open:

A LEO can flip the knife as many times as he or she wants to, he or she can arrest and charged you for having prohibited weapon even it may took him or her 100 flip before the knife is open and lock.

This apparently the same in New York City.

Just curious, why did the cop stop you?

Sorry for the lost knife. If NY keeps electing the folks they do, these types of laws will just expand, and encompass more and more people. Either work on voting them out of office, or move to a state that doesn't elect these idiots in the first place. Joining Knife Rights would also be a step in the right direction.

No cop stop me:) I am planning to get my firearm licences so I went online and do some research about the law in Canada - Basically You cannot have anything on you for the purpose of self - defense.

Look on the bright side.

There's no need for an "R.I.P." as the knife certainly isn't dead. I'm sure that nice cop officer is taking real good care of her as his new EDC...

:(
(Sorry, I couldn't resist the shot at a good ol' cynical comment).

Sorry, the question was directed at the OP.

To those asking what he did to be stopped and searched he may very well have been doing nothing. N.Y. Is notorious for their baseless searches. Just look up stop and frisk new york. I live in illinois. And up until 2008 my state was the worst for knife owners. Then New York decided it was going to take the title. Its hard to complain about illinois knife law when New York is around. Around here the the cops ignore most of the knife laws as long unless you are breaking other laws.

The reason I asked was out of curiosity. I was wondering if it was a traffic stop, or if it was an outright police state, gestapo stop and frisk.

Sad day for our Nothern Neighbors. At nearly 50 and with a cane the Police just leave me alone.

I know it was out of curiosity. Thats usually why we ask questions. The OP stated that his situation is personal though and didnt want to discuss the actual reason for the stop. I was merely pointing out that in NYC and outlying jurisdictions most people are stopped and frisked without due cause.

You're right, I kind of missed the part where the OP said it was personal, so I apologize. The reason for my curiosity is that I'm well aware of the NYPD stop and frisk policy, and the draconian enforcement of unreasonable knife law interpretation by the NYPD and District attorney. It infuriates me. One of the reasons I joined Knife Rights.

No need to apologize. I was just pointing it out. I almost missed it myself in the middle of typing my own questions. I agree with you though man. I cant even really talk about it without feeling the pressure build in my own skull.
