Rocketed into outer Snark

The store clerks over here usually don't even say that. That isn't an excuse to not throat-punch them though.

I know, they have no way of knowing what my day was like which is why I didn't do or say anything to her. This one asked how I was doing and when I said "not good" she prodded further even though it should have been painfully obvious not to.

Last night on shift one of my co-workers collapsed and died. He was one of those cheery guys that is friends with everybody and really brightens the place up, so pretty much everyone isn't taking the news well. To make matters worse he was only about 40 years old with a wife and four kids.

Guys, in lieu of sympathy for his family and friends do yourselves a favor and make sure all your affairs are in order. A will, plenty of life insurance, money in the bank, whatever. You don't want your family worrying about money and things while they're also trying to cope if the worst should happen. Luckily we get full benefits at my job including life insurance and tax-deferred retirement account so his family should be covered financially. Might also be a good idea, if you have a collection of anything like expensive knives or coins or anything of value, to inventory it with approximate values so your family can get a fair price if they have to sell it off right away. I heard of one guy that had made a deal in advance with his favorite local gun dealer so that if he died all his wife had to do was bring the guns in and he would give her a pre-determined price for everything right then and there. Doesn't seem like I need to remind any of you good folks to actually spend time with your families, judging from all the pics on here. So just keep that up.

Id much prefer to have a kubotan or good self defense pen. Used right a kubotan can cause a lot of damage without hurting you. Self defense pens can be used similar to kubotans and dont get looked at as harshly and are likely legal everywhere (i dont know for sure just seems like they would be)
I have an "UZI" self defense pen that was a gift from a customer. Everybody who's ever used it has commented on the heft of it and most ask me where I got it. It has a handcuff key (so I'm told, as I have no experience with that shtuff) threaded into the end of the barrel opposite the pointy carbide tip. Plus it writes pretty smooth, too...which is all I'll ever likely use it for. When faced with confrontation that's avoidable, I use the Monty Python method......"run away! run away!". Not that I've had to....it's not really in my job description.

I am so sorry to hear that, bigghoss. Good advice, too, tho it's pretty hard when you're that age to contemplate that you might need to have your affairs in order.

As for the clerks (and pretty much most people), nobody wants to hear that sort of thing, because it makes them uncomfortable and they don't generally know how to react or what to say, so the foot usually goes straight into the mouth. When my sister was dying of cancer a couple years ago, I just found it better to clamp down on what I wanted to say about "how my day was going" so I didn't get even more upset. Never pretended to be happy, but sure as hell didn't say what was truly on my mind, either. Kinda like now, sometimes. It's really not their fault that I'm having an....off, shall we say....day.
I'm sorry for the loss of your friend.

I have a thing about USA knives though. Maybe I can look past that.

the Fallkniven isn't a false brand with outsourced manufacturing. (the recent Camillus, for instance)
It's a swedish company making swedish-style knives in a country known for the tool.

So... I like spending my money locally when I can too, but respect if you choose a good swedish blade.
The F1 would be my pick any day of the week.

I'm not a fan of the E4 handle either. Too short. there are some nice mods for it, though.
In that price range there should be a lot of options.

I can't recall who to attribute this to, but I once read:

You can avoid most trouble by not doing stupid things with stupid people in stupid places.

Yeah, this is priceless advice. Can't improve on it. I've been in plenty of situations myself. Win or lose, they where all my fault, cause I wasnt level headed or smart enough to identify the situation in the first place. So, in my older years, I've adopted the saying, if its not worth dying for, its not worth fighting for......... on the flipside of that. Tactical pens....... just another way of some company, getting your money. Sure, they might be made of great materials and all. But I'm certain they won't stab any better than a .49¢ bic. and even if they do. 99.9% of the people here wouldn't know the difference.

Sorry to hear about that Bighoss.. Smoke and prayers sent.

When it comes to tactical pens you dont have to stab with them, they are not meant to break the skin...They can be very effective used as a kubotan. Knowing how to use a tool correctly is what makes it effective.

I had a platoon sergeant years ago that studied martial arts all his life.. He gave us a demo on kubotan techniques and what can be used as an improvised kubotan.... and you dont want to be on the receiving end of someone who knows how to use one right.

I respect what your saying WW. But if you have been in so many scuffles you for one should know that things that work in the dojo dont necessarily mean squat in the real world....... I studied akido for 7 years. Loved it, was very good at it., but what went on in the school was 10x different than what really happened in real world situations. Somebody breaks out a pen in a situation where your attacker has nothing to lose and is on drugs or whatever, chances are, if you do not have many hours of training and can't remain calm, the best thing thats gonna happen is your going to leave the situation with a tactical pin hanging out your ass.

LMAO!!!

Yea i agree.. Real world fights are nothing like what happens in a gym 9 out of 10 times. And if you KNEW an attack was imminent, then instead of getting your keychain ready there are more effective ways of staying safe.... Like leaving the scene in a hurry.

That being said, If you havent practiced with something till the point muscle memory kicks in then chances of you using that something properly is limited. Same thing goes with a firearm... If you havent practiced with it till the point you can hit where you are aiming without endangering anyone not meant to endanger you shouldn't even carry a gun. Same thing about survival kits... If you dont know how to use the stuff in the kit effectively then having 10 kits might not even help you in a survival situation. Basically what im saying is you should practice with ANYTHING you want to be effective with.

Im not saying they are the best self defense tool, or the smartest thing you could possibly carry.... I havent done much practice with a kubotan personally (and i dont carry one)... But id still rather use one of them than a 1 or 2 finger knuck is what i was getting at.

Fallkniven knives are made in Japan out of japanese VG10 steel.
The ESEE 4 has a short handle, but the aftermarket G10 scales add 1/2" to them which makes them pretty comfortable unless you have XL hands.
when I got my BK16, I sold my ESEE 4

so i remember that...

what happens if you nuke a peanut butter cup? :D

First hings first. You dont waste peanut butter cups.

Next... We have done the ivory soap microwave experiment... THAT really expands a LOT!!!!

But... It also puts a very strong soap smell in the microwave and rest of the house.

And i had no luck on the grape plasma experiment. Maybe i used the wrong color grapes though LOL

Well then... whadda you know, I agree with you 100%. I think that most people think that just because they buy something that is titled "tactical" it makes them Superman. Nothing could be further from o the truth. Frankly, it makes me sick all the companies and knife makers that cash in on it. Personally, I wish I could get away with putting on my website. "T.M.Hunt custom knives, they won't make you a badass, but it you want to be, you got a good tool for it. Lol." Just venting a little. I don't want to make anything that takes a human life, but the sad thing is, there is a market in it.

guy named SH@RP use to make them - IIRC, he was a machinist in LV and his boss let him do stuff like that during down time to improve his programming skills.
he also worked with G10.
here are a couple others he did:
