Great pics guys! Would it be a good idea to use a leather belt or other high grit belt on the Ken Onion Worksharp on a Hizen?

Something about mirror polished tanto blades is just..awesome. Or mirror polished blades in general.

Getting my knife polished atm, not a rockstead but I hope I can still see my soul in the reflection

I have aWilliam Henry that the edge is so polished that, while it will shave easily, it won't cut a sheet of paper if I pull the edge across the flat surface. Are Rocksteads like that?

Rocksteads are known for their sharpness out of the box. Some with more experience will tell you can get them sharper but Rockstead do come pretty sharp. They also claim that their knives will hold an edge for an extremely long time. Anyway I would suggest that you visit their web page and review this fairly short thread in its entirety to give yourself a better idea as to what a few of the owners of the knives have experienced.

Hello, I thought I'd mention to you that I've ordered a Kou in ZDP-189. I should receive it tomorrow.

I have a Bugei katana that I've owned for quite a few years. I've done a fair amount of study of Japanese swords and I purchased it with the intention of experiencing a relatively good example of a Japanese "style" sword. I have done some practice cutting with it, but it is very much for me to view, handle, etc.. and I enjoy it as such. The reason I comment on this is I believe the Kou will function in a similar manner for me (although I will carry it and use it for light cutting tasks).

Thank you for your posts and providing your knowledge and experience. I plan on following these as long as they continue. Regards, Adam

Each time I am ready to pull the trigger on the Rockstead, I get stuck in this "ZDP189 vs YXR7" vortex and never make a decision. Now the decision is easier because all of the YXR7 Higos are out of stock, but WHY are they out of stock?!? DUN DUN DUN.

UGH...

Hello,

Initially, I thought about purchasing a Higo/YXR7/DLC. However, I decided I wanted a Rockstead Kou with the ZDP because, as I understand it, the Kou is being phased out of production and I wanted to get one before they were not available anymore. Also, even though the YXR7 is probably "tougher", I believe for my purposes the ZDP will be fine. Another reason I wanted the ZDP is simply for the fact that Rockstead produces it with such amazing Rockwell hardness.

I'll do the best I can with stropping and perhaps taking the blade through the series of wet/dry sandpaper grits to see how well I can maintain it. But I have no problem sending it to Rockstead for regrinding/sharpening/polishing/etc.. Among other things, I also like mechanical watches (Rolex, IWC, Omega) and it is pretty much inevitable that a mechanical watch is sent for "servicing" (disassembly, lube, seal replacements, adjustment). I'm kind of thinking of a Rockstead in a similar manner. I wish you the best in your pursuing your interest. Regards, Adam

Yea, I think I just want to have a reason to have something "tougher", but I have to be real with myself. I am not going to horse around a 900 dollar knife, regardless of its steel. I have a Benchmade and a Strider that are relegated to those tasks and perform them just fine.

SO, ZDP it is! Now just picking between the Shin and the Higo.

Hello. Sound reasoning... very good for you! It is a nice decision to have to make. I'm sure either one will be very nice and serve you well. I plan on sharing my impressions after I receive the knife. I hope you will do likewise. Regards, Adam

^ this is my current, only grail knife. I will be selling some other hobby stuff in upcoming months to finance it. To me, it's the perfect iteration of what a Rockstead should embody. Love the size, lock type, blade shape and traditional Japanese apricot blossom motif. Just the perfect edc/gent's knife in every way. Keep the pics coming everyone!!
