Rockstead Knowledge Thread

Definitely not the level of detail or response I expected from a luxury Japanese brand, that's for sure. At this price, every piece of wood should be museum grade.

Rockstead senior management clearly don't understand the fundamentals of Social Media. How many sales will they lose entirely from the fallout of this thread?

Personally, in addition to (not instead of) I think this should be a thread in Feedback, so that way the next time the ghouls at Rockstead are searching Bladeforums for a way to screw over a customer who owns one of their knives, that thread comes up. Also, it's a thread that will come up every time somebody on the internet opens a search tool and decides "Huh, I'd always heard Rocksteads were nice, let's see what the internet says....oh HELL no."

While the crack in the lockside scale could conceivably have happened after it left the factory (but still should be repaired under warranty in my opinion), there is no way that this hole in the show side scale should be acceptable. I really don't understand why they didn't take the extra 30 minutes to fill and sand it out...it was painfully obvious when filled with buffing compound.

I’ll second that.

Cleaned the buffing compound out of the lock side "light spot", apparently this is acceptable when Rockstead builds a knife on a Friday:rolleyes:

Thanks for the heads up. I know you love the action of the HIGO, and had me considering buying one. But with that kinda customer service and warranty...I’m out.
Only covering the first owner Rockstead? You did build the knife right? Stand behind your product. Another company for my list.

After being a long time fan of Rockstead, I gotta say I’m entirely disappointed with this. They should not be sending out knives with flaws and then expecting their customers to pay for their own mistakes. It should not matter if you are the second owner or not, the knife is unused and unregistered.

After reading through what’s up here, I’ll gladly retract the praise I’ve given Rockstead over the years and will no longer buy their products.

I can understand that there are limitations to warranty services, but this is just flat out cheap and ignorant. I will no longer recommend their products to others as well.

The fact that they searched for your knife on here and pinpointed the history of its sale is almost like an invasion of privacy. It’s not that hard to see the cracked wood is a natural crack that should have been filled and buffed before it left the factory. The gaps clogged with buffing compound are just lazy and careless craftsmanship.

Sorry, Rockstead, but you just lost a very loyal customer.

Blues, just wanted to say it’s always a sad day when we have to stop singing praises of one of our favorite knife companies. I understand and agree with your stance, just sad to see.

And this is the other light spot on the show side scale with the buffing compound cleaned out...

Partially filled and sanded crack by the body screw that was also filled with buffing compound...

Chip, this deserves a dedicated post on the FEEDBACK: G/B/U section. Please consider posting this there.

Also, since there is no warranty, and a steep fee plus shipping and them having your knife for however long - I was going to offer to help you with this. But it looks like you have it well in hand and are clearly not concerned about further voiding your warranty. Let me know if I can be of some help though.

I definitely appreciate the offer TR, means a lot:D

I was able to get everything filled, sanded and buffed up pretty darn well;)

I guess I'll put this out there for anyone else in a similar situation (damaged wood scales, no warranty support...) if I can help repair your ironwood scales, I will, no charge.

Woodworking and knife handles are my hobby and from what I've seen, I'm sure I can assist. I'm sure not everyone will be as comfortable as Chip.

Anyway, just an offer if you feel like you are stuck.

People like this ^ are why this place is the best:)

I just emailed them about getting some clip screws for my Shin, I was told to reach to the dealer that sold me the knife (2 clip screws)

Wow... with the exception of Microtech and their (stupid) proprietary screws I can't think of another manufacturer that wouldn't send out clip screws.

Rockstead has always been upfront that there is no warranty except to original purchaser. The fact that a Japanese company stands by its word and enforces their rules should not come as a surprise. I've always considered that policy to be a good reason to stay away from Rockstead.

Yes, but did you see the pictures of the Higo WValtakis WValtakis received? It was an unregistered knife, also unused, so defective from the factory and they still won’t warranty it. It’s not like the original owner caused these problems. A page back there is another owner with cracked ironwood.
