Rockstead Knowledge Thread

Kinda bummed out on this, I was changing out a 2032 lithium battery on a remote, just needed to slide the battery out, not even prying...and I see this later. may be a case for steel that is too hard. will send back for a fix...sheesh! Never saw this coming.

I'm confused, where in this operation were you using the high performance cutting tool to cut something? Seems more like a case of using the wrong tool for the job🤷‍♂️

Thinking about giving this a shot for my rockstead. Anyone think it could work? Seems like the convex attachment should make it doable.

Few pics of my Higo II in Antique Bronze fade.
ZDP189 blade is 67.6 HRC.

I went back and forth on picking one up for almost 12 years- I’m beyond pleased with it.

The dichotomy between advanced materials like Titanium & ZDP189, and the pocket clip made of SUS420J2 is… interesting and a bit puzzling. Despite 420J2 being stainless (just barely so), I’ve read comments from people who say they’ve experienced varying degrees of rust on the clip.
Its design is simple, but effective, and I like the contrast to the rest of the knife.
I may get the clip DLC’d.

I’ve also read one (maybe two) comment on another forum from a couple years back that said a small Sebenza/Inkosi clip works on the Higo II.
Anyone know more about this? The pocket that is machined in to the scale for the clip does remind me of the CRK design, but I dont have any CRKs at the moment that I could compare with.
I’d be curious to know just how well they match up.
Anyway, up the Rocksteads!

Does anyone know what grease does Rockstead uses?

Mine looks like a petroleum base and very dark. Maybe a Molybdenum type lube?
I just recently disassembled my Higo II. The factory grease was definitely black, but not heavy weight. Honestly it felt a bit tacky.

I cleaned it all off and applied a thin layer of Frog Lube to the washers. It’s much more smooth and quick now.

I can say for sure now that CRK pocket clips will fit the Higo II, and probably the other folders.

I’m sending the OE clip off for DLC.

(I’ve got a small dab of masking tape on the underside where the clip makes contact with the scale. I don’t know for sure yet if the clip may cause some scratching- going to take it slow.)

It reminded me a molybdenum disulfide… like what we use in ball joints.

I could be very wrong but that was my first thought upon opening my Higo and ren up the first time. They both currently ride on CRK grease.

I’ve used Frog Lube for almost ten years on all sorts of knives with bearings and washers- never anything but fantastic action.
Seems though with the Higo, I may need something a bit heavier.

I’ve opened it twice since my initial re-lubing, and both times I’ve noticed blackness. The green frog lube has turned black! I’ve never seen that before.

Also, anyone else with a Higo 2 experience lock-stick?
Has it eventually worn in?

The face of the lock bar insert that contacts the tang is polished- I’m thinking that is the culprit.

This knife is so close to being exceptional- I wonder if they’d pay attention to customers input.

That clip looks really good, you should anodize it a nice bronze color to match. Almost looks like it should be factory.

Off topic, but it is crazy to me how Rockstead uses both aluminum and titanium handles. For such a premium knife, I would've thought they use only titanium; the higher end option.

I’ve never handled a Higo 1, which was their “Dura-Luminum” material- some sort of aluminum alloy.

I actually acquired two of the CRK MIM clips, one sandblasted and one glass blasted.
While the OE clip is away getting DLC, I’m going to have the glass blasted CRK clip cerakoted.

A bronze color WOULD be cool, but color matching can be tricky. I’ll likely go with black to match the hardware.

Staples?

The stock Rockstead clip is pretty good.

I’d just run the stock clip. Slip carry it till it gets back from dlc?
I concur completely about the OE clip. I like the shape, and it works perfectly.

I actually have a new leather slip coming my way this week- it MAY fit the Higo, but I’ve got two of the MIM clips, may as well use one.

I was thinking along the same lines and figured was MoS2. I had bought this Liqui Moly in July and tried it on my Higo and Higo II. I think this is pretty close to what they use and the action feels similar. Very smooth and of course slower due to it being much more viscous. Something about slow rolling the crazy smooth Rocksteads is satisfying.

I pulled mine apart, polished the washers and tried Nano oil 85w, & 10W as well as KPL 15W and 75W. While with the oil it is faster, (less viscous the faster obviously trying different ones), it just wasn’t Rockstead smooth. I was hoping to get Rockstead smooth, but faster to flick open.

I did also try Finish Line grease which is similar to the CRK grease. I wound up using the Liqui Moly and that’s what’s back in both of mine.

I used a drop of 85w nano oil on each washer, and wiped it off lazily before putting it back together. Kept it running smooth for more than a year. Mine was Duraluminum, and all it did was make me wonder if all the money spent on Ti framelocks was wasted.

Ok so, I haven’t noticed this phenomenon on any other Higo that I’ve seen online.

It wasn’t like this when I first got it- at some point it just appeared and I can’t figure it.

The black body screw to the rear of the show side scale has developed a very light colored dot in its center. It’s almost like the pupil of an eye 👁️.

Has anyone else observed this on their Higo, and/or have any concrete insight about it?

Did it wear off some?
