Rockstead Knowledge Thread

I’ve only had this knife for a couple weeks. It does not look like the black finish has worn off, nor can I feel any texture when I rub my fingernail against it.

Before I send an email to RS, I was just curious if it’s been known to happen.

The pivot end is perfectly fine..

Is this removable from the knife?

A touch up pen, can be used, preferably off the knife. That way you can scuff it and clean it, before applying coating.

Look up Birchwood Casey super black touch up pen.

I haven’t tried removing- I assume they’re press-fit, but shouldn’t be irreplaceable.

I feel like a 2 week old, $1300 knife shouldn’t require touching up… not yet anyway.

At two weeks, yeah, I would be sending a not so happy email to them.

The finish shouldn't be coming anywhere close to that, that quickly.

You know how like.. if you bend a piece of colored plastic back and forth a few times, the stress points begin to discolor and look worn out?
That’s what this reminds me of- almost like removing the screw and replacing it a couple times created tension that discolored it. Of course, that doesn’t really make applicable sense in this case, but it’s kind of how I’m perceiving it.

Update:
I sent an email and pictures of the faded hardware to RS. They replied quickly and are sending me replacement hardware- a painless resolution to my problem!

Also, I disassembled/cleaned and re-lubed the Higo2 a few days ago. Instead of my usual Frog Lube, I opted for some KPL Heavy.
I think this could be ideal for folders on PB washers, as it immediately felt even better than new!
In the few days since, the smoothness and quickness has only improved and I think it’s getting pretty close to “broken in”.

I've never really understood these knives. I appreciate that they are absolute works of art but any time I've seen videos about them in actual use they've chipped... which seems like a horrific ordeal to approach considering that stunning mirror polish.

What is their intended use in terms of cutting medium?

I use the hell out of my REN when it gets carried.

I have chipped the blade due to my stupidity and shipping staples, RS said they will repair it under warranty. No big deal. Polish holds up great.

This knife opened up and broke down every single box from our recent move. Stropped it a few times. Still tree tops hair.

Nice to see them shipping out hardware!

I also inquired about purchasing backup parts like a pocket clip.
They’ll sell most of the individual replacement parts for the Higo and Hizen models (other folding models lose their warranty if disassembled) for a nominal fee.

The pocket clip is only around $14.. shipping is actually more expensive!- closer to $20.

Here’s a cool piece of Rockstead knowledge I learned today..

The show side hardware (of the Higos, maybe Hizen too) is pressure fitted in to the show scale.
When replacing the discolored piece I’ve posted about above, I was met with the question of, “How do I remove this from the scale without damaging it”?

I found something that worked amazingly well..
A bicycle chain breaker.

The scale fit perfectly in the slots and the pin lined up perfectly to press it out.

Ok, this is getting absurd.

I just noticed this morning that my replacement body screw is starting to discolor like the original did!

Is there no one else who has experienced the same thing?!

From this morning..

Shipped from Japan Wednesday, arrived today (Saturday).. dang.

RS sent 3 replacements this time, just in case.

Here’s the old piece next to a new one-

Comparing them through a jewelers loupe, it’s difficult to ascertain what exactly is going on.
If it is some sort of surface wear, I can’t begin to guess why or what is causing it.
The only surfaces it ever comes in contact with are the inside of my pockets and the inside of my right hand.

Maybe try some Birchwood Casey black finish, on the two that have faded.

They make pens for touch up also, I would sand them lightly, then put it in the liquid. Bend a piece of wire, to suspend it in the liquid, letting it rest on its side or top, might create a darker spot.

It could be rubbing on the inside of your pocket. Just the motion of you walking, could be creating enough force, to rub off the finish.
