RODENT SOLUTION, my first non-ESEE knife.

So after many weeks of deliberation I pulled the trigger on the Rodent Solution. The selling point to me was the handle length compared to the ESEEE-3's I was looking at. So while I wait on the SR to show up, what should I be expecting? How does the SR stack up to the ESEE's that I know and love (or is it the other way around. How does the ESEE stack up to the SR?). Quality, feel in hand, ect. This knife will be an EDC for me while on base (hence the sub 4" blade) and will remain in my bag, an Arc'teryx Khard 30, since it has no MOLLE.

The other question I had being new to this maker is this: How does the Rodent Solution and Rodent 3 compare? As I said, the choice came down to handle legth and the Solution won out there.

Thanks in advance for the coments!

The RS is an amazing knife and if my ESEE 3 didn't fit my tasks as good as it does I would carry a RS everyday. You will not be let down by the RS. One thing is SR101 (52100 steel) will holds its edge a good bit longer than the Rowen 1095 you are used to but it will take a bit more time to sharpen.

I have both and the 3 just sits in the truck as a backup. I used the RS a lot for cleaning deer and liked it so much I just order the RT version. The handle is a major selling point, it could be a little thicker for me, but the overal shape and size just fits. The steel takes a great edge and IMO holds it longer than the 1095. Also, the blade is thicker, but this does require it to be thinned down for slicing.

I have been through a handful of esee knives and never cared for any of there ergos, the handles were just not comfortable to me. I got rid of them all. The rodent solution on the other hand is an amazing knife, The handle is very comfortable and the steel is amazing. I use quite a bit of 1095 in beckers and Ontario knives but the sr101 holds its edge quite a bit longer for me.

The rodent solution is better in hand than the rodent 3 IMO, i have both, i prefer the solution but the rodent 3 is still a great edc knife. The hilt/hump handle on the rodent 3 sits well in my hand. Maybe check out the swamp warden too, if you can get one with the optional scales its also a perfect sized edc.

Here is a picture so you can compare some of the smaller ones size side by side.

Worldwood,

Thanks for the picture post, helped really see the difference in the Rodent 3 and Solution rather than just a number in a calculator! A question on the Warden though. Where do you find it? I'm looking on the site now and don't see it, is it discontinued?

-JWLevin

No problem man, Pictures always help me in deciding a lot better than the numbers. I ask for pictures often lmao

Yes the Warden is discontinued unfortunately, but it can be found on the exchange from time to time and it also makes an appearance on the "bay" occasionally. It is a skeleton knife from the swamp, the scales are made by a member here.

Jesus!

Talk about a knock to the wallet! Afraid the Warden is slightly out of this E-5's comfort zone right now. Curious, what makes that knife so costly compared to the Solution or Rodent 3?

-JWLevin

The guy is selling it for 115 with a sheath, that's a good deal. The knives on the site do not come with any sheath, and the warden is discontinued which adds value, simply because you cant order it anymore.

Oh and as Army veteran myself thanks for your service sarge.

Worldwood,

I must have been looking at the wrong one, Game Warden lol $300+. Checking again!

-JWLevin

Oh that's the Busse Game Warden lol, also great but higher priced as you see :)

Looks like you found the right one!!! Congrats on scoring your first swamp rat!

Yep... I have the ESEE3 and it is by far my favourite ESEE..!!! I have a couple of RSs and would not be without them !!!!!!! The 3 is nice in hand the RS is great. I myself just snagged a couple swamp Wardens and added the scales, they are sweet like that....!!!! You probably just beat me to that wrapped one as well.... ;)

The ESEE3 out of the bag will be a better slicer first up, thinner blade v the factory edge on the RS, do a little work on the RS and it will really surprise you...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here you can compare them with other small offerings from Swamp and Scrap Yard

Nice comparison pic elof! Now I want my Rodent 4 even more :( I think i just hit a 3 month wait for a custom 4.

But it shouldnt be much longer now :) The longer you wait the closer it gets lmao

Aye Dios Mio! Alright now that I exhausted my Spanish, I think I got it figured out. I had to reply on the sellers profile with my email for a paypal, correct? New here and don't want to mess it up (ie he doesn't get his money fast and I don't get the knife...). Thanks for all the advice and help guys! Seems this forum is a solid group.

P.S. Worldwood, Navy here not Army but its all the same on the paycharts :)

If you left click someone profile you can send an email unless they have the option off, If you pay for membership then you will be able to send PMs. As a regular member you can post visitor messages. But normally if your posting in a sale thread taking an item you can just put your email there too. i just break it up like- sharpmindz at live dot com- for instance

And this is indeed a great group, and if you enjoy swamp rat, maybe also check out the Rat chat forum, just take the link from the swamp rat website, its a lot smaller group but really great people.

And i guess i can let you slide on being Navy :) j/k

CongRats on the Swamp Rat score, and welcome to the insanity!

Sergeant, best rank in the Marine Corps. This was first told to me by a MajGen shortly after I was promoted ( January, 2002 ) and I can't say that I disagree. Is it the same with the Army and Navy? I've always been curious.

amflud,

Sounds like its the same in every branch then. Minus the AF. That's a given anyway right?

Andy,

Oh man now I need to check this statement.....See my ESEE 6 is my go to for any sort of hiking/camping. Drop her in leather and head to the trail head. I guess this is apples to oranges though.
