Room for improvement?

There are 61 people in this room as I post and only 14 are members.
Lorien, Kohai999, RogerP, JParanee, SharpByCoop, sheathmaker, Kevin Jones, The Virginian, betzner, Avigil, Bruce Bump and all the other regulars should be proud.
You guys are the reason 61 people are here Wednesday at noon.
If it aint broke....

Much Respect from Texas.

after reading this post I noticed something,
why is it I renew/pay every year with Platinum Subscription and it doesn't reflect that under my name here?
is this something I can adjust in my profile?

thanks
dan

Of course I can only speak for myself, but TO ME this forum is pretty much home. As Joe pointed out earlier, many of the other forums floating around out there in cyberspace spend far too much time with in-fighting and bickering amongst members. By comparison, this sub-forum is actually REALLY well behaved and to a very high degree, self-policed. We have mods, but they don't have to spend the majority of their time reigning in egos and putting out fires. For the most part, our membership does that on it's own...this alone sets us, as a group, apart in my mind. This place feels like family. People don't always agree with one another, but that's part of the beauty of it!

Some of the most talented makers in the world show their work(or have it shown for them)here. Many very prolific and discriminating collectors of handmade knives spend time and grace us with their knowledge in this sub. Every level of maker from beginner to the Masters do WIP threads and let us watch them work on this forum...this place is literally PRICELESS to people like myself who love every aspect of the custom knife community and always strive to improve upon what we do. The depth of knowledge here is immeasurable...

People who come here to show off their work and conduct themselves with respect are usually met with VERY encouraging comments. Those who come to show their work AND ask for critiques get both...what more could one ask for? I personally wouldn't change a thing about this forum. It's a wonderfully diverse place that continues to expand with time and represents a wide range of skill levels and personal preferences. Outside of an actual, physical knife show...nothing quite compares to it!

Keep on keepin' on fellas:D

Good post Mike

Thanks Joe! It's nice to have the opportunity to be a bit thoughtful every now and again...it's pretty easy to express an opinion on this subject though, this place is near and dear to my heart:)

Right on Lorien:) I'm pretty sure we all have the same issue...an unquenchable love of blades and all the baggage that comes with it! I wouldn't have it any other way. Now, as the pub sign at my favorite bar states, "KEEP CALM and carry on" :D

This place is one of a kind. I've enjoyed it every time I'm on here and have learned a LOT from you guys.
Been here longer than what my join date says. I was here back when cockroachfarm aka Holger was here. I miss that guy.

Anyway why not start a suggestion box? Get ideas of what collectors and makers would like to see here? Or NOT see here?

Make the place even more interesting on your / our own? Ways you could do that is - every week discuss like three knife makers and their work from around the world. One stock removal, one forger and one deceased maker. And the week before you do this have a thread on who will be those makers or who you would like those makers to be next week?
There are folks from all over the world here now posting. So you could have collectors/forum members who may now of a unknown maker out there that could be shown to the rest of us here?

You could do fun threads? Like guess who's knife this is thread?

And you could even do a thread on some of the TOP knife collectors from the knife world?

Knife shows - I'm sure there's someone on here from every knife show there is in the world? So we should be able to find out about every show? How was it? Who won the awards? Who had hot knives? (This is already done fairly well, but with improvement could be even better, you know like assign a forum member to the task?)

Like I said -it's a great place, make it even better and by this I'm not saying it needs fixed. Just make it even BETTER than it is.......

Hi, Dan.

For whatever reason, the site does not automagically adjust your user group when you pay to upgrade. You have to manually do it yourself in your settings. Click on "Settings" in the upper right of the display screen, and then when the next screen pops up, click on "Permission Groups" on the left hand side, under "My Settings." The next screen should list all of your available groups, and give you the option to select which group you want to be identified as a member of. Select the box for Platinum Member and you'll be all set.

great suggestions! That's what I'm talking about. Really didn't want this to become another gripe session, more a place where good ideas might see light of day.

Dan,

After you log in to Bladeforums.com, click the Settings tab on the top right of the screen.
Then on the next screen under MY Settings on the left, below MY Account, click Permission Groups
On the next screen Click on Platinum Group and then Update Display Group.

That should take care of it.

I,ve frequented this forum since 1999 and have supported it most of the time with my membership fee. I had really thin skin and still do actually but have learned that these folks are on my side and if I can take their advice I could greatly benefit from them. There's a wealth of information to be learned here even for the seasoned makers but there's also some darn fine people here and that's why I tune in most every day.

I can't think of any changes at all that need to me made IMO most everybody here is kind and generous to the new makers. Most of them are reluctant to post but they need to understand that you guys have seen about a million knives and can't post on everything.

The mods let us take care of things around here and most everybody gets along and would shake hands if they could.

I like it, don't change anything

I suppose if there was one thing I could change (knowing that I can't) it would be to ask certain members to state their opinions with an open mind and a greater tolerance for different points of view. Too often I see opinions presented as indisputable fact, which can cause irreparable harm to an otherwise good discussion. This is particularly true in Shop Talk and is the primary reason I don't go there anymore but I see it here at times as well. Bad advice is bad advice no matter how forcefully it's stated.

There was a recent thread here where a relatively new bladesmith posted pictures of a knife he had built for possible submission as a JS test knife, and while he did receive some wonderful feedback and thoughtful suggestions from several knowledgeable makers and collectors, there were one or two know-it-alls who seemed to presume to be able to speak for the judges themselves and dictate what he could or could not do. The maker took the comments to heart, showing great poise and composure in his replies, but frankly I'll be very surprised if he shows any more of his test knives here until after the judging, if at all. I've seen similar attitudes reveal themselves in WIPs here as well, where some know-it-all will come in and say "you're doing it wrong" without allowing for the possibility that perhaps the maker has a good reason for doing it a different way.

Even the most experienced among us can still learn something new, and no matter how great one's knowledge, it does not grant them license to treat others with contempt or disrespect.

Lorien thank you for an interesting thread. A few comments from an insider/outsider.

Before I begin let me say that I love BF and although I run my own small forum I spend more time here than anywhere else on the WWW.

It is very hard today to run a successful forum with all of the complications, personalities and financial constraints that go along with it. It is even harder when faced with such a diverse interest/hobby such as ours. Spark runs an excellent show and does so with grace and courtesy.

The moderators are overall excellent, fair and very accommodating. Anyone who has attempted to keep order among the melting pot that is the WWW will appreciate what a hard job it is.

Insofar as the Custom Forum is concerned it is always hard to strike the correct mix of what is acceptable criticism and what is just a straight put down…….and my interpretation thereof and a makers interpretation are completely different and often not in the same sphere.

If someone makes/purchases a knife, posts it up here and asks for opinions you should expect all manner of comments. Some from folks who really know what they are talking about, and others from people who really should be seen and not heard.
It is the way of the WWW.

There are people here, collectors and makers who have an amazing repository of knowledge and experience and a smart, less experienced maker/collector could tap into that wealth of knowledge to improve and expand their own abilities.

Not everyone is a diplomat and many people simply call a spade a spade, that does not reduce the value of their knowledge or experience, it just makes them blunt. Expect it all on the WWW.

My view is listen, read and learn. Something I do every day on BF.

Humility and a desire to learn is my watchword.

This forum mirrors with the Traditional forum. It's one of the best because many here insist on it.
Thanks...
rolf

Steve65 wrote in post #75 what I think is the most succinct and 10 ring on the target of what we are and should be. I met Steven at blade a couple of years ago, and I had heard he was a real gentleman. He proved that at Blade and continues to do so here. Bravo, My friend! Well Stated.

I haven't been here long, nor have i much knowledge with knives compared to all here, but from someone fresh i really enjoy coming into this section and reading everyones thoughts. I've learned quite a lot from the threads and the few people who have graciously replied to my emails.

I enjoyed reading comments from Les Robertson, which was unfortunate that he was banned. And seeing critiques from kohai999.

As far as room for improvement, that normally applies to everything, but things seem to run just nicely here. Favorite part of BF for me. cheers~

Thank you for your kind words Paul.

To receive such a compliment from a member of the knife community with your stature really makes me feel good.
I will stop by and say hello to you in Atlanta in June.:)
