Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

I use to carry a cheap no name Barlow when I was in my early teens. Don't know what ever happen to that knife but I'm thinking about picking up a new Barlow since I don't have any in my collection and just recently started getting back into slip joints.

I was looking at maybe getting a RR Barlow with the yellow synthetic handle and then filing in some texture to give it some grip (I like texture on my handles). Is this possible? Are the RR true pinned scales and not faux ones like the old Imperial Barlow's had?

So far, I've got about a half dozen inexpensive slip joints that I've been trying out for daily carry. Last couple weeks it's been a Pride Cutlery Congress pattern that I won in a GAW here on the forums. First slip joint I've owned that had half stops. I don't need them, but I must say, I do like them.

I just changed the pic to one that shows the difference between the two a bit better. I have one lockback, ironically a case MOP. I don't ever carry it but it was the knife that got me interested in accumulating more, so I'm keeping it for now!

Oh, and I just ordered a black pearl peanut due to this thread!
Show us pictures of your pearl peanut when it arrives, OK?
Your new comparison photo of white versus black pearl clearly shows the difference. I definitely prefer the "depth" or "iridescence" or whatever it's called in the black lip pearl. I may have to add black pearl RRs to my hunting list that already includes the elusive stag Rough Riders!

Here is a small white pearl whittler. I suspect the "pearl" is some kind of stabilized composite of pearl. Kind of flat. It's still pretty nice for the price. I have a teeny little black pearl stockman that's nicer looking, but I haven't taken a picture of it.
...
That white pearl IS still pretty nice. When I was a lad I had a pearl handle pen knife that I carried only to church. It's the only knife I ever "lost"; when I moved away to college, I suspect the knife was still in a suit coat pocket and I forgot about it until about 18 months ago, far too late to try to locate the forgotten knife. :(

Look at the RR Bark Bone barlow. Really nice, textured handle with real pins :-) I've got a set of RR barlows; except the tobacco bone with the acorn shield which I can't find and guess it is out of production.

Do you have closeup photos of the knives taken out of the box? It would be helpful to be able to see the knives in detail.

I've heard rumors of the some of these synthetic handle materials coming from the same source as Frost (a search should pull up some old discussions) but I've never heard rumors of Case making knives for Frost. Without more detailed photos it's difficult to see. But they look foreign made from what I can see.

Here's some info about Case's use of Corelon...

I suspect your knives are different and made overseas since they are branded Frost Cutlery, not Case. But I don't know for sure. Some more photos would help... close ups of the handle with the kniife open from the side... photo of the springs...and a photo of the well with the blade closed. It's easiest to see detail if the photos are taken from directly overhead and not at an angle.

i'll get some close-ups later......thanks for input everyone....i think i may have gotten it backwards, but the ff still some of the best i've seen on the frost....
i do have some steel warriors that have great ff as well,it's hit/miss with this crowd as you all know......they are good for lite use...the set above is gonna stay new,as maybe someday they'll be worth collecting,jd

Bark Bone, thanks, I'll look it up:thumbup:

The black lip pearl peanut arrived today, unfortunately it doesn't have the match striker nail nick or threaded bolsters that the white has:

Having a hard time getting a good pic of the white pearl, you can sort of see the yellow streaks near the butt end:

Here it is with a three-blade congress and a whittler:

I do lapidary work and I agree that the pearl is stabilized and maybe a laminate. The black lip pearl seems to have more of a deep acrylic finish than the white. I love the new peanut, especially for less than the price of lunch!

W:eek:W! That peanut looks fantastic, lucydog!!:thumbup: (FWIW, and taste is of course subjective, but I like the unthreaded bolsters and smooth nail nick MUCH better, especially with the elegant black lip pearl.) That's an impressive collection of pearls you have there, L.dog!:cool::) Am i correct in thinking that Rough Rider no longer makes the pearl covers for knives, and you've had to track these down in the "secondary market"? What's the model number of your new Peanut?

I just got a RR 1023. Looked interesting. It is well made, but now that I have it, I haven't the foggiest idea what it was designed to do?? I reground the back to make it a longer clip and like the long "barlow" style bolster, but still don't know why the simitar shaped curved blade. A bread knife maybe? Anyone had any experience with it?
Rich

Looks like a variety of bullnose skinner. The hump near the tip keeps you from poking holes in something you don't want to when skinning an animal. Most are more rounded, but that whole knife is more stylized.

Thanks for the info. Just curious as to what it was designed to do. Now I know! Don't know that I'll ever use or carry it, but it is fun to play with while laying on the couch :-)

Still looking for a tobacco bone standard barlow with acorn shield to complete my RR standard barlow set.

Found a great use for the 1023! When sharpened up well, it makes a great box cutter; I mean for slicing up cardboard boxes to go into the trash. The longish blade makes cutting all the way down a box a breeze.

Yes, the knives I have are discontinued, the peanut is number RR237. You can still find some if you look around.

These are my pearls......The one large curved with the abalone streak thru
center has second written across blade.....It's also a single blade.....Not seen many
with only one blade....The second if for a crack I assume.....Fit an Finish are good....
My favorites are the single blade Copperheads,as you can probably tell....;)

Thank you for this thread full of great imports....

Great collection! I love that little pearl "canittler".

Bark Bone, thanks, I'll look it up:thumbup:

Just as a follow up to this, I looked up the Bark Bone and in the process saw a Red Jigged Bone. Being I just wanted texture and the Red Jigged was nearly 50% cheaper, I went with it.

Look forward to having a Barlow in my pocket again, it's been years.

Thanks, lucydog.:thumbup: I may have to see if I can find one. 50 years ago, I had a little fake-pearl penknife that I carried only for church, but I have no idea what happened to it. The black pearl peanut obviously isn't a white pearl penknife, but it's small and elegant and might be a good replacement for nostalgia's sake! :D
