Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

I also picked up a Rough Rider Whittlin' Buddy. Probably won't get a chance to actually use it to carve on some wood until this spring or summer, but I've had my eye on this model for a couple of years.

I really like the fact that the canoe locks. Also, it looks nice and thick. The bead is a nice touch too!

Now why does the whittler remind me of Valentines Day and a song:D

My future is a Valentine
Stolen in a perfect crime
I know I'm living my life out of line
But with a blazing smile this time
Cause with you in my pocket I feel like I'm stealing time

Man that white bone Barlow and acorn smooth Tabaco (?) are stunning!

You are not wrong! They do a very tidy Barlow both Baby and Standard, don't know about the G.dad but I suspect they're excellent too.

I received a case amber stockman in cv for Christmas that I took back for very bad blade rub. The store said they received a letter from case stating this was the norm for this pattern but did take the knife back. Remarkable in that I can't think of one RR stockman or a Colt that has blade rub. I even have a Taylor Schrade stockman in sawcut bone and 9cr14mov that has no blade rub.

My Rough Rider stockman (2 back springs) has no blade rub.
The only other stockmans I have are a Buck 301 and 371. No blade rub on them, either. Of course those have three back springs.
Don't have a Colt stockman, yet. The Taylor Schrade Inperial 4 blade congress lacks blade rub, as well.
Don't know why Case (for double or triple the money - or more) can't get it right.

I would not have considered buying a $14 knife, just assuming it would be garbage. But, thanks to a generous member, I won a RR Canoe. To say I'm surprised is an understatement. It's decently crafted and the blades came super sharp and hold their razor edge. A couple strops on my pant leg and both blades literally pop my arm hairs off. I'm impressed!

Thanks, Gev!! I appreciate your kind words. :)
I'll have to confess that you have way more imagination than I do to have that whittling knife conjure up thoughts of Valentines Day and a dreamy song! ;)

Mini Barlow and Standard that I got with Scrim, these are very nicely made knives that are good for both work and display, the word is credible.

Those look great, Will! The scrimshaw on the regular Barlow is especially appealing to me. Does Rough Rider sell scrimshaw models, or did you get that done (or do it yourself ) after you bought it?

I've seen enough to to be intrigued - I ordered an electricians knife (with pliers!) and a cotton sampler to check out the brand. Two patterns I would generally pass on at GEC or Queen prices

It's QA. Same reason Queen can release some of the most beautiful folders we've seen...only to have threads pop up all over BF about gappy liners, wobbly blades or shields falling out in a matter of days. And everyone's experience is usually different: While I've seen plenty of Case box-to-bladerub "cases" (pardon the pun ) my own large and medium stockmen are all free of it, whether CV or SS, and the fit/finish is more often than not well better than "adequate".

Some of the other patterns I've seen, however, have been consistently a tragedy, sometimes as bad as the problems that gave a negative reputation (likely unfair) to RR, Taylor, etc. I've had my eye on a new seahorse/Williamette whittler and between the Case and Queen "hit-and-miss" QA departments I somewhat dread the possibility of pulling a lemon out of a Schatt & Morgan or Case box, given the woeful turnout of decent knife spreads at shows in the area.

Any factory, any company, American or "other", can send a bad example of its product out the door. In a shrinking world such as the traditional slipjoint market I would hope Case, Queen, and anyone else trying to serve a "premium" niche would ramp up efforts to spot the big boo-boos before they make it into customers' hands.

Much appreciated GT! I'd like to take the credit but I have no such talent..... It came from the bay, a woman specializing in Scrim on White Bone RR. She was very helpful and did the work just as I wanted.

I got my first Rough Rider this weekend. I thought it would be an inexpensive way of determining if I like the scout pattern and would carry it. I was expecting a very light pull, some blade rubbing, maybe some gaps and not a solid feeling knife in the hand. But I was happily surprised. It does feel solid in the hand, no real gaps and blades are not rubbing. As far as having a weak pull, I do wish it was a little weaker. The thing is a real nail breaker. So regrettably it will not see any pocket time to give me a feel for the pattern.

Nice scout. That first Rough Rider can be a bit surprising when it comes to construction and sharpness out of the box. You just don't expect such a well built knife at such a low price. :)

Yes, those Scouts have quite tough springs, not for the weak of nail....

Got a small wood scaled lockback with a Copperhead style bolster on order. Should be good in the pocket and I will give a report once it arrives.

Exactly, I just didn't expect the quality. But, now I know if I want to try something I will not hesitate because of the price.

I think I need more calcium in my diet to strengthen my nails:D
