Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

Almost all of my multiple blade knives have blade rub in one way or another. It is probably from me pushing on the blade too hard when I open them up.

Mine has a bit of rub as well, in exactly the same way. I still chalk it up as a wash given the price and the sheath. The main blade is already scratched up from the handful of times I have used the pen blade. /shrug

Mine too. I'm not too worried though :)

Well, I'm glad it's not just me then. I've got several RR's and hadn't had one with rub like this. I guess I've been lucky with the ones I've received. And, I guess I shouldn't be surprised considering the price point. It's a pretty little thing though. I especially like the bone shield. I'll probably pull the trigger on an acorn too.

Thanks, guys!

Must be the pattern as I've found my RR Stockman/Whittler patterns to have little if any blade-rub, less than most CASE knives anyway.

Here's an RR with a whole lot less blade rub than the German knife behind it. :p

In all seriousness (which isn't much... :D) there is a weird finish problem with the backspring of the knife, visible from the picture. About halfway up the spring from the "shoe", it almost looks like somebody decided to switch from a polished finish to matte. It's such a jarring and obvious demarcation that I immediately felt the change in finish and checked the spring for a burr or seam. Aside from that (rather bizarre) little problem, it's a nice little knife with some attractive bone scales, fits in a watch pocket like it was designed to live there, and serves as a great little cutter and cap lifter for those of you too traditional for a Beerlow. :D :D

As has been said in this thread repeatedly, not bad for a ten dollar slipjoint. Now if only someone would get some stock in that damn dogbone jack... :grumpy:

Lot of love for the Dogbone Jack lately, and I've also thought they were pretty cool ever since I first became aware of them. But I never ordered one, and this week, I went a slightly different direction. I ordered a Dogleg Jack lockback in a configuration Rough Rider calls a dogleg mini-canoe lockback. (I think they have at least two other blade configurations in the same frame.) Since I've become a canoe addict, this was the natural choice for me. It's small (3 inches closed, I think), but it seems well built, and it comes with what appears to be the same model sheath that the Dogbone Jack has. No whistle on a lanyard, though; instead just a little bead. For me, it's a nice variation on the canoe theme.

I also picked up a Rough Rider Whittlin' Buddy. Probably won't get a chance to actually use it to carve on some wood until this spring or summer, but I've had my eye on this model for a couple of years.

I've wanted a whittlin buddy for about as long so you'll need to let me know if it's worth it. I can only find em for $20ish with shipping and don't want to pay that for a Rough Rider unless it's actually good.

I haven't had much luck with these working very well as a bottle opener. Not enough of a lip on the heel to grab the bottle cap.

White Bone Small Barlow with even tinier Schatt Stag friend!:D

I really like these small RR Barlows, for a small knife you get a lot of blade, much prefer it to a Peanut. No finish issues with this one at all.

Like I wrote, Neko, I'm not sure when I'll get a chance to really put that carver through its paces. The only place I found that had them in stock had a decent price (under $12) but their shipping charges are crazy. Fortunately, I had several knives (a total of 6) I wanted to order, which put me at a slightly lower shipping category, plus I think of the shipping per knife as not too bad.

I just received my latest batch of Rough Riders and Colts. I had a sawcut bone Dogbone Jack, but I got rid of it because there was significant blade play in the spey blade. All this talk of them made me miss it so I bought a new one, like btmccutcheon has up there. This one has much better construction, no wiggle in either blade. I'm really happy with it.

I also picked up a stag Colt muskrat and the black smooth bone wharncliffe.

I do like how the interesting wharncliffe handle feels in hand, and I think its long slim blade is pretty neat. It has a slight hollow grind.

The stag on the muskrat is fitted very nicely! The only flaw on any of the knives is a bit of blade rub on the main blade of the Dogbone Jack, where it hits the tang of the spey.

(oops got a bit of finger in the corner of the in hand shot!)

Josh, congrats on your new knives! What is the bone on your Dogbone Jack? It doesn't look sawcut (although it has the same dark color as RR's sawcut brown bone), and it's certainly much darker than the smooth tobacco bone I'm used to seeing from Rough Rider.

The stag on your muskrat is incredible!:thumbup: I got a Colt stag canoe this week, and I was overjoyed at how nice the covers are! Here are some photos. I REALLY like the symmetry shown in the 3rd pic!

Wow GT, the stag on that canoe is really great too! Yours is a little more symmetrical than mine. I think the stag on these colts is really well done.

The description of the Dogbone Jack says it is smooth tobacco bone. It is just dyed darker than previous versions of their "tobacco" color. It is pretty nice.

I looked around for another sawcut bone version, but it seems those are sold out everywhere.

That's one of the best looking canoes I've seen in a bit. The stag and shield look perfect together. And, the pinched bolsters just add to it. That's a really nice find!

Thanks, Josh; I think the symmetry of your muskrat stag slabs is way more than adequate! Your muskrat and my canoe are the only "real people" photos of Colt stag I've seen, but based on these two examples, I'm impressed!!! I'm very tempted to pick up an example of Colt stag in whatever patterns they've got! Thanks for the info on the Dogbone Jack color, too.

Thanks, btmac. :) The "price/performance ratio" is hard to beat!
