Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

I picked up the 4-bladed stockman fairly recently, too. It is one of my better-finished RRs.

The spey looks like it might have started life as a clip point, something I have never seen before.

Not a slip joint.. obviously, but still RR. Came with rust on the blade, even though it's stainless?

I've had several RR folders and non have rusted even after being used alot and reglected.

Strange? strange.

I don't think the fixed blades are made in the same factory as the slip joints. They might have different steels.

That is strange Sam! :D How do you find the knife otherwise? I've thought of getting one (even though they keep edging the price up ;) ). What's the sheath like?

nice looking fixed blade for sure......my dog bone jack knife and whistle came
yesterday....it had really nice almost even dark molasses bone?..or some with nice f/f.
not bad for 12.00 shipped....

Nice, I had one just like that arrive today too! :D

My third RR arrived the other day, I'll photograph it if I have a moment tonight.

I think #4 is going to be one of those dogbones. Peer pressure on BF! :p :D

That is a great little knife, no "CCC" there.

Yo, the knife is pretty nice. Not as well finished as the RR fixed blade hunter I had. Sheath is pretty cheap feeling but solid enough. I've not had a chance to put the knife through any work yet but it does feel solid, even though I'm pretty sure it's not a real full tnag. More of a stick tang with an artificial handle case. Other people suspect this too.

Has anyone tried the RR "Gunst" blade lock trapper, RR824? Am considering one. What is the blade length and does the thumb hole opening actually work (positioned to allow thumb to get leverage to open)? Thanks in advance.

A Smooth Ivory Bone Baby Barlow arrived a couple of days ago, fantastic:thumbup: Can't get pix yet as it's always dark when I get in from the daily grind...:(

These are quality small knives, grand finish and very good to use. Astounding value. Get one and you'll be glad.:D

It is actually "Gunstock" blade lock trapper, but the word is cut off in some listings. It looks like a pretty neat knife. From what I understand, you press on the small blade to unlock the main blade. I can't remember if I read about that feature in this thread or somewhere else. I haven't had a chance to handle one yet.

Blade length is 3 3/16", cutting edge about 3". Closed is 4 1/8". Small Wharncliffe blade is 2 1/8". Hole on large blade is functional as a thumb hole. Large blade is locking, with the lock disengaged by squeezing the small blade into the handle. It's sort of a lockback, except the lock release isn't on the back. The small blade is slipjoint.

It's a beautiful knife, and the gunstock jigging RR uses is just wonderful. One thing I don't care for is that the main blade is .110" thick, with a sabre grind. I reground it with a zero edge, which improves it's slicing ability, but it's still far thicker a blade than I think is necessary.

Sadly, a knife this size doesn't make into carry rotation very often with me.

Steel Warrior had a similar locking idea on their locking copperhead....It was one of
their better quality series.....The steel Warrior was Frost top of the line, that you were less
apt to find a lemon in that line......I have several of the Steel Warriors, but not sure I still
have my locking copperheads, but do wish I still had them.....I'll look later and see if
I can find them,or at least one......That series and the Frost family were more of the
quality of the rough riders than any other knives made by Frost since they quit assembly
in Japan.....

Hey, I got mine in just now too:

This one has a little bit of blade wobble to it, but I'm still perfectly happy with it. The whistle is actually really nice and has a pleasant tone to it, and the knife and sheath are both very handsome.

I really would have been perfectly fine with the knife being complete junk because it came with this awesome sheath:

And the sheath is pretty accommodating:

But it does have its limits...

I had one of those come in a few days ago with smooth bone and a dog bone shield. Nice but probably the worst executed RR I've gotten to date. Pretty significant dip in the bone next to the shield, and bad blade rub on pile side of main blade where it's banged up against the secondary tang. I may have to try an acorn to see if it's the same. Nice little knife if you don't look too closely. Much bigger than I had expected too.

Mine has a bit of rub as well, in exactly the same way. I still chalk it up as a wash given the price and the sheath. The main blade is already scratched up from the handful of times I have used the pen blade. /shrug
