Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

i found the trapper after reading this post...i picked it up,started to get the whittler as well, but decided to wait....
i sure hope they come out with a ct201 single blade gunstock in genuine stag......i was flipping the tv a few nites back and
the cut corner had colts saying that there were gonna be no more....can't remember the guest, but he was selling off
all he had left in stock.....prices were not that great,so i left them alone...plus,none i liked other than the hoppy trapper...
i found one of those now....it's a good looking knife...i just wish they would do a single blade slim trapper....
Here is another you don't see very often...jd

My latest Colts....The Hoppy Trtapper compaired to the Monster Trapper....And my newest CT201 with the
smaller coat of arms like shield....Didn't realize it had a diff shield until I opened the pkg...I just picked
it up because the color was lighter, and they're little Monsters....If you don't have one,I think you should try
one out.....JD

The larger Trapper is a Monster ...

After the disappointment of the Schrade cigar whittler, I decided to pick up a Rough Rider whittler. Much better fit and finish, and all of the blades are actually able to be opened. I was deciding between the yellow synthetic and the jigged red bone, but decided on the yellow since my husband liked it more, and it was just slightly cheaper. I think I'm going to try to modify the small clip blade into something more like a coping blade.

Just picked up a couple new ones. The truck stop actually stocks some of the Colt/Marbles/Rough Rider models.
Picked up a second RR large "tobacco bone" Sunfish. If/when I can afford to, I think I'll send this one off to Glen to have wood scales put on. More "old school working knife" that way.
Second is a Marbles MR139 "Fish Knife". Impressed, so far. Blade is centered, no blade wobble, and came sharp out of the blister pack.
Other than "Produced By SMKW" on the packaging, I don't know which of their brands it is. The M1212 Bundeswehr West German Army Knife. Not a bad knife. There is no blade play, but the tip of the main needs the last 1/8 to 1/16 inch sharpened. Kinda a rounded edge there.

Got this one, a Rough Rider smooth bone Sowbelly, I did modify a few things on this, I ground down the kick on the sheepsfoot blade so it now drops in level with the main blade, no hump sticking up, makes for nicer carry and overall look too. Also I'm not a spey blade kinda guy, so I ground down the spey blade into a pen blade, handy with the three styles of blade at hand. It arrived in need of a sharpening but most seem to always do, it did sharpen up nice though.

I agree, for under $15 it is quite hard to beat, all blades have great walk and talk plus there is not any blade play, also good thing too.

Been after a trapper pattern folder for a long time now and have been holding out for a saw cut Rough Rider. I should say at this point that I am essentially a town dweller and have virtually no need at all for such a knife as this, but just love the whole idea and the history of the trapper knife and have wanted one for my collection for these reasons. Having found it completely impossible to obtain my first choice of trapper knife, I have finally given in and opted for the faux tortoise shell version. I have to say I am not disappointed with my decision. For me the quality of the blades on this knife are everything I would expect from the pattern; long, sharp and hollow ground. The fit and finish seems, as someone who admittedly doesn't own many 'high end' knifes, really, really good. Walk and talk too is also great. Maybe the spey blade is slightly floppier in the opening than the drop point, but both lock open very positively and close with a reassuring snap. The tortoise shell scales are very handsome and seem tough and practical. For the price, and considering the quality, it is difficult to see how anyone is earning anything out of the production, sale and distribution of these knives. Very satisfied with this purchase indeed. :)

Good looking trapper. :)
I have(?) had(?) the tiny trapper with the same covers. Seems the truck polyergeist really liked that one - and my G-10 handled Buck 371stockman. He swiped them both.

Would not cost a fortune to replace those knives with one of these my friend. And, if you can, I would certainly recommend it. Just keep it out the way of those pesky spooks.

Folks at work really like the way this one looks and love the way the nail nicks are created, always a nice touch I think!

Sheepsfoot works very good of course for cutting out labels, and it keeps it's edge as well.

Rough Rider and Colt makes it readily available to try out different styles/patterns of folders. It took a while to like the sowbelly, but I whittled out a nice walking stick and am sold!
I've been wanting to try a gunstock and got around to ordering one and immediately like it alot.
Love the long pull on the main clip, with nicks on the cope and small spey....matchstrikes! has some blade rub on all the blades, but solidly made.
Excellent walk and talk. Gonna try my hand in lowering that cope when closed

I received a Marbles Barlow today with ram horn scales. Looks very much like the RR barlows. Probably made by same factory. Very nicely made. Good walk and talk and very pretty.

BTW, I also have the RR gunstock stockman with bark bone scales as above. Great knife.
RR, Colt and Marbles make it too easy to spend money (and still get well made knives ;-)
In the past few years I've bought 12 Colts, 7 Marbles and 27 RRs ! You folks are killing
my pocketbook (but thanks - loving every minute of it). Not to mention several moderns;
Kershaw, CRKT mostly.

I picked up a RR1427 Glow Sodbuster with liner lock. It is a small sodbuster.

Wow, that sheepfoot blade sits LOOWWW! One of my complaints with some stockman designs is how high the sheepfoot blade sits.

Unfortunately, I'm not a huge fan of the etch on this one.

Yep I usually grind down the kick on them to get it lower

And the etch isn't bad a nicely done frosted appearance

I was wondering if there are any RR styles that you've been disappointed with? For me it is the thumb hole, blade lock trapper. I have average size hands, but it is impossible for me to use this knife as a OHO. The thumb hole is just too far down the blade; can't get the leverage to open it with my thumb. I do think the blade lock mechanism is neat; but this is one knife I'll never carry (not that I carry most of my RRs, Colts or Marbles). Anyone else have a disappointing experience with any RR?
