Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

I have noticed that some RR's and other brands, (even some Case knives), have a sharp edge to the handles, which I think is what you are talking about. If you had a bench grinder with a cloth buffing wheel that would be the way to go, (creating pocket wear so to speak). That is how the manufacturers simulate pocket wear, a buffing wheel and some extra abrasive rouge. I have actually taken the back of the blade on another knife and carefully scraped the edges on a knife with sharp edges before, and if you are careful that works. If you know anyone with a buffing wheel that would be the best way to proceed.

Yes, that is indeed what I'm talking about.
I'm thinking about trying wet-dry sandpaper followed by a good buffing.

Always remember: It's easier to remove material than to add it. I would start with sandpaper before using anything powered like a belt-sander.

Yep wet dry sandpaper and since there are metal bands in there you might want to use a small piece of wood as a backer to the sandpaper as the bone is softer than the metal, that way your sanding will be more even, less dips along the edges

Frankly, even hafting, (how they transition between bolster & handle), can be done by hand, it just takes elbow grease and the right grit(s) of paper. Wet/dry or even very fine emery paper could work.

Thanks Gary and Sonny.
I'm also going to try grinding the spey blade into a Wharncliffe shape. Probably should do that first.

Has anyone taken a look at the RR 1137 utility knife? It's basically a TL-29 with an adjustable wrench on the butt end. I've never seen that before-
Also their DoubleTake Canoe knife. It's like two canoes that got fused back-to-back.
Strange but intriguing stuff.

I have seen the utility knife in the catalog, but not in person, I do have two Double Takes though; Trapper & Muskrat, & have been meaning to get a Canoe also just to have the set. An interesting idea to be sure, to put two identical knives back to back in a single frame is an interesting, if not somewhat off beat design. I wonder whose idea it was in the first place?

They all look like mutants to me - like they got fused together in some freak accident at the RR factory!

I just wanted one, (or two or three), because it was so different, and like all RR's they are affordable. As strange as they are they are well made in every way that I can tell. People I've shown them to, even those that don't give a darn about pocket knives think they are interesting, so I keep them around as a curiosity if for nothing else..

Yeah, I'm thinking about tracking down a Double Take Muskrat now that you showed it to me. I've never gotten a RR before, but I've been thinking about trying them out. I've definitely heard some surprisingly good things about them, which strikes me as odd for a ~$10 folding knife!

I like the acorn shield on the Muskrat. The Trapper is surprisingly usable for me, as I have big hands. With just one blade extended it's like having a big handle with a lot of torque possible on the blade due to the extra grip area. I think you will be surprised at the quality, same with the Colts, (same brand owner, same factory as RR). The Colt Scout I have is the best scout knife I have ever owned, an extremely sturdy, well built knife, (and I love the color of the jigged bone & the fact it has no bail). I carry it in a belt sheath every day, use it and love it, (burp......did I mention that the bottle opener works very nicely?).

Made in the same factory? Interesting, I haven't checked colt out yet. I think I'll go do that now.
That Scout knife looks pretty nice! It's your best knife compared to what, if that's okay to ask. Rough Riders? GECs?

The Colt Scout use to be the Marbles Workman (I have both and they are identical except the marbles had micarta scales. Good knives.

Compared to the old Imperial & Colonial Scout knives I have, that they are made in the same factory was told to me by an employee of a store that sells them.

Picked up this RR yesterday. Fit and finish is really nice. I believe that is called a tug boat whistle. The drawing is from a WW 2 vet on naval air station letter head. Check out the story he tells in that picture.

Good looking Marlin Spike. Is that purple bone?
I have the yellow handle version. Very well made knives.

Thank you sir. It's actually more red looking than it looks in the pic. Yeah its pretty well made and I was surprised at how thin it is. Goes pretty well in the back pocket.

That's pretty tempting right there
Nice shot too
