Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

I like the shape of that clip blade. I’m going to need to find one of those. RR does take dye very well in my experience.

That dye job looks great, Ace! :cool::thumbsup::cool::thumbsup:

(I personally have a strong sentimental attachment to Rough Rider's amber jigged bone, since the first Rough Riders I ever had were a set of a dozen assorted patterns, all in amber jigged bone, and I was astounded at how nice all the knives were! But if there's one thing I've learned here on The Porch, it's that people have vastly different tastes! ;):thumbsup::thumbsup:)

I was torn between leaving it stock and changing the color. The yellow/amber on this knife was very nice, but having done one dye job I really wanted to try another one. I have a couple of RR whittlers in amber bone and I just looked at them and decided they were best left alone. Maybe I'll have to pick up another RR just so I can experiment with a different color of dye. :p

Great RR sowbelly, deltaboy!! :thumbsup::thumbsup::cool:
The first sowbelly stockman I ever had was a Rough Rider just like yours, and I fell in love with the pattern! I have several sowbellies now, but my RR has a special place among them! :D

There is no point in posting a picture of mine. It looks just like yours, and your photo is better than the crappy cell photo I would take. I agree it is a nice knife, though.

Another dye job: I've looked at this muskrat and almost bought it so many times but the color was just awful. Blotchy on the back and faded red/pink on the front. Having had good luck with brown dye in a couple of recent tests, yesterday I bought the knife and today I got some red RIT dye. Fifteen minutes in a hot dye bath improved the looks quite a bit.
Strange that the color was so far off when everything else about the knife is "top drawer." Great fit and finish, no gaps, good pull and walk/talk.
The bad news is that yesterday the store owner was working on a big RR order. Oh, dear, what am I gonna do with more knives? :p

I thought Rough Riders were only available at the [brick and mortar store owned by the owner of the brand].. Please tell me I am wrong.

Hi everyone - noob here... I recently purchased 4 RR knives from [an online knife purveyor]. One of them is a RR1693 Baby Copperhead in buffalo horn with an abalone inlay. Unfortunately, out of the box, the primary blade didn't snap smartly into the fully open position. It did snap closed very well. The secondary blade snapped open great, but didn't snap closed. There doesn't seem to be a half-stop on either blade. I've been working the blades open and closed for a couple of days and I *think* they are a bit better now. Still not great, but better. I also bought a Peanut in Red Pick Bone, and that knife is awesome - it snaps into every position on both blades. Are all RR knives supposed to have a half-stop? Or is it that some do and some do not?

So - should I return the RR1693? I'm a bit disappointed that the one "Premium Select" knife I included in my order is the only one with issues. If I have to pay shipping back to[the store] then it's not worth returning it - will they consider this "defective" so that I get reimbursed for shipping? I've never bought anything from [that store] before so I don't know their policies.

Folks, there is a link to the list of dealer members in my signature line. There is also one in Gary's signature line.
If the seller is not listed there, then leave the name of the seller out of the post.
That includes leaving out miscellaneous hints about the seller's name.

Definitely wrong! The local knife shop here carries them, and I ordered one from an online retailer once.

In my experience the greatest variation in Rough Rider "quality" is in pull and snap. There seems to be a big variation not only from knife to knife, but between blades in the same knife. I find that much more often than other problems such as gaps and off-center blades.

Your only talking a $12-$13 knife. I'd clean the pivots well with soap and water, blow it dry, lube it and start cutting with it.
