Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

If I am using it and someone admires it, it becomes theirs. And they make great converter knives. Example: the one I just gave my bro in law. He's not a knife guy, but everyone should have a decent pocket knife. If I gave him an expensive knife and he threw it in a drawer, that would be a shame.

That's my philosophy on them as well.

Been looking at Colt and Wrangler Chinese brand knives on eBay.
I have lots of RR in the stable, wondering if any of you fellas have purchased these others? They look pretty much the same, as RR, maybe its just relabeling and made by the same company, merchandising as they say. :)

Pretty sure Colt knives are made in the same factory as RR. Not sure about Wranglers.

I'm looking at Colt canoe, it sure looks like a RR only with a C on the Ferrel.
I just might have to give them a try, whats to lose, $10.00 or so. :p

+1 on previous reviews of the RR San Mai lockback. This is the smaller size, 3 3/8" closed. Out of the box, I don't note any flaws. Will be interesting to see how this knife performs a few years out.

First look out of the box. Blade rides high, but typical I think of this style of knife.

Front side, nice damascus pattern on blade and bolsters. Not a hair splitter but plenty sharp.

Back side, pattern is wider, and attractive. Sleek lines. Matched handles.

rr_san_mai_sp.jpg

Tight springs and liners. Did not show it but the blade and spring junction is right on. Good lockup and release.

Pretty much right on centered blade. My photo is a bit off center. :o

Heck of a XMAS gift for $20.00.

Got these in the mail today. Great fit and finish on each of them. I really like the whittler.

Here are some of the others in my collection:

Like I've said before, the sawcut series is my favorite:

If a fella didn't know any different, you'd think we were looking at $50 to $70 dollar knives. :D

I just picked up a Rough Rider Elephant Toenail. I'm shocked at how well made it is and how sharp it came.
I can't imagine a better way to find out if you like a pattern than to buy a RR and try it out. For the money they are terrific.

I have this Colt Railsplitter. It's a hefty little bugger and a well made knife, especially for the price.

oxbld,

Nice collection! That RR case is great!

Thanks for the pic's RS, it does look like a tough little bugger at that :p

that RR case is awesome! could you please email me who sells those! I like it, and my wife will be thankful! she's sick of draws being full of knives. :D

I have 4 Wranglers, a large and a small Lockback and 2 folders. These are sold and highly touted by The most respected knife dealer. (now, who could that be ??), so i thought i'd check them out.
My impression: decent, similar to RRs but these did not arrive with a shaving sharp edge and i'm not inspired to buy anymore despite the Guru's endorsement.
Someone asked about Wranglers. I hope this is the correct thread ?

Thanks Roland, that's good to know about the edge's, no point in me buying a brand that I would be disappointed in.

Though not a RR, I picked up a couple of Hammer Brand (made a thread about these) knives. Both of them are well done with no flaws that I can see, or feel. One was a Swell Center Jack knife, which I am carrying, and the other one, my favorite, is a copy of the S&M File&Wire Wildcat Driller Whittler, that I had and sold:(, with all blades sharp as a razor. I like these big Elephant toe and Sunfish patterns, and have my eye on a Case Sunfish right now.:D

So i managed to pick up a rough rider gunstock stockman yesterday at a gunshow. I kinda liking it, love the gunstock bone scales.

but i noticed that the blades are really thin. Ie when i was sharpening it up nicely i could see the blades bending sideways (laterally). They are thin enough i am pretty sure i could snap them bare handed (I WONT, but...)

is this normal in a traditional knife? Or is rough rider just a cheap brand. I mean i've heard good things about rough rider but it may be normal since i am transitioning from single locking folders of a more modern stylel.

anyways, i thought i would ask the experts
thanks in advance.

Ryan

Thin blades cut better. If you're used to tacticools, which are significantly over-built, then they will seem too thin to you.
Just keep the lateral stresses off the blades and you will learn to love the way they slice!
