Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

This is a RR2186..... It has 2 very useful blades with firm pulls and half stops..... The knife fits the hand ok when using the pen blade...... However, I think most death grip cutting will be done with sheepsfoot deployed and the pen parked..... Quality is first rate......

I enjoy picking up these RR Barlows and I just got this yesterday, have to say I’m impressed, but I also have to say it’s the second one they sent me. The first one had a bent tip. This one has a single carbon blade, no blade play, centered, flush in all positions, no shield, and no big “R”. It has good snap when opened and good snap when closing but it has a weird “half pause” that I’m sure is supposed to be a “half stop”. 😄

I recently bought this knife, and the first one sent to me also had a bent tip! I called customer service and was told a second one would be sent to replace the first defective one. The second one arrived a few days later, and although the tip was fine and well centered, the knife didn't close well to the half stop. It was gritty, lazy, and something just seemed wrong with this knife too. Long story short I threw number 2 away and fixed the first one with the bent tip. I should have sent both back but it's not worth the time and hassle. Some of my best knives are RRs, but sometimes getting those gems seems to be the luck of the draw.

Did you try washing out and lubing the joints on number 2 before tossing it?

I've gotten a couple that were a bit stiffer out of the box than the "5" pull I've come to expect with Rough Rider/Ryder.
After cleaning and lubing the pulls were a smooth "5".

Yep, most of the time you get what you pay for, but every once in awhile you get more than you pay for. 😊

Yeah I worked on fixing number 2 quite a bit...I lubed the joints, blew compressed air, open/closed a bunch. Nothing seemed to work. It wasn't that the action was stiff; it was more like the spring was dead on the close to half stop. Tossing a new knife isn't my usual method of handling these things, but some days my patience is poor. On a more positive note, like you, I've often been able to fix the walk and/or talk on a knife by cleaning, lubing, etc. I love when that happens.

That VG10 modern style Rough Ryder is a really nice knife. I have the stockman, and the blades get incredibly sharp and hold their edge. It's a perfect size for a watch pocket. The build on it is perfect.

I am so thankful for this forum. I collect Rough Ryders, and whenever I would try to post about them at "that other forum" some old coot would go on a rant and derail the whole conversation. The admins just stood back and let it happen. My hat is off to the admins here at the blade forum for maintaining a calm and respectful atmosphere where people can share about their hobbies without being shouted down.
In a way it's a sad reality. The slip joint in my entire collection with the best action isn't a GEC , Case or Buck but a ten dollar RR. That's a hard pill to swallow.

That’s what I was trying to describe when I called it a “half-pause.” It still has nice snap when it opens and closes which is the most important thing for me. This isn’t a knife I’m going to carry much anyway, but that said it’s much more pocketable than the two blades so I hope they keep doing the single blades.

For this issue you might try a stronger laxative or perhaps you can find some information on a different forum. 🤣🤣🤣

Your number 2 response gave me the best laugh of the day! Regarding this RR barlow we've been discussing, I also like the fact that it's a single blade version. The cinnamon stag covers are really pretty, the blade is carbon steel, and I plan to carry it. There's also a single blade RR Reserve supposedly coming out, and I'll probably get that one too.

🤣 That’s awesome buddy! Nothing better than a good laugh. 👍

Yep, me too, it’s on my wishlist. We’ll have to compare notes when they land. 😊👍

I had one in bonestag but sold it because it was a handful.View attachment 1771148
I have that same one Alan, (can’t find a picture right now) it’s very nicely made and the Sowbelly is nice also, but the whittler is junk. They sent me another one and it had the same issue, no W&T at all, almost as if it had a broken spring. Weird how one model can be so bad and the others so nice. They have others in the line but I stopped at the whittler.

I forget who posted the 2 blade sowbelly but it was the impetus for my purchase. If it had one blade that would have been my choice.

I’d be willing to try the serpentine Jack in the black stag series if they hadn’t put 3 blades in it, a clip and pen would be worth a try. They do some weird stuff sometimes.

I recently purchased two Rough Ryder Reserves, the large trapper in blue, and the micarta swayback. I personally prefer American myself, but these are far better than any Case I have purchased in the last ten years. Gave the trapper to my daughter, and the swayback went into my rotation. Hell of a good knife.

I've handled a lot of Case I wanted to buy but only one RR, Steel Warrior, Marbles etc. knife, a lock back whittler. The lazy smallblades, nailnick and purple bone convinced me otherwise.

I hadn't seen these carbon steel models with the cinnamon stag bone before your post, Todd; great-looking knife!:thumbsup::cool:
I have a canoe from the damascus steel and cinnamon stag bone line RR did over a year ago, and like it a lot!

1 Tablespoon of flax seed per day works wonder for me! 🤓 🤓

That looks like the "black stag" line that Colt used to make before that company closed and Rough Ryder and Marbles seemed to divide up some of Colt's product line, with Marbles getting the "black stag". I have a Colt black stag sowbelly and a Colt buckshot bone teardrop jack that are both built like tanks. (RR seems to have the old Colt buckshot bone franchise now, I think).
