Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

I've got a pile of Steel Warriors (but not as big a pile as my RRs) and there's a few that are exceptionally good and the rest are good, but fit & finish is not as good or as consistent as my RRs.
I'll post some pics when i get back to my knife home in about 5 days.

Given what I've read (which generally mirrors what you've said), I would have preferred to try a Rough Rider, but their congresses aren't available with 4 different blades unless you get the 4.25" size, which is too large for me. I'm sure there will be some RRs in my future though.

I do not have any RR's yet, but I do have several Steel Warriors, and Hammer Brands. Total I have 9 knives, 5 SW, and 4 HB. ALL of mine have come razor sharp out of the box, now a couple did have a rough sorta edge, but 20 licks per side on my Sharpmaker fixed that just fine. The fit/finish has been very impressive on all of them, with one of the SW having just a slight gap on one scale as it fits to the bolster.

I don't know if it is the patterns or what, but I definately like these Hammer Brands! All 4 of these have been excellent in all phases just out of the box. My favorite, and one I just started carrying in my Urban Wallet pouch is the HB10. It looks very much like the S&M Wildcat Driller Whittler. Good tight springs, good walk/talk, and excellent blade grinds.

I also carry a HB09 in my left front pocket. It is a Swell Center Jack pattern that is 3.75" closed.

I'll probably pick up more of the Hammer Brands, then switch over to the RR's and give them a try!:)

I just got this one, it's a hunter pattern , but smaller. It's about the size of their copperhead pattern. The pocket sheath didn't come with the knife.

I meant to give them as christmas presents, then figured I would appreciate then more. :o

Hi,

I like that Hunter Pattern. I've been thinking about getting a Hunter or a Copperhead.

Dale

I always wanted a Case pocket hunter , but the Case version is way to small, the RR is about 4" closed.

Here's another brand that I picked up. These are Colt branded not RR, but still a bargain at around $20. These come packed in nice boxes too, almost a shame to toss out.
IMO they're a step up from RR. The blades are finished nicer ...high polished and nicely swedged. All four blades are fitted in the handle better than some of the RR patterns. Based on their construction , I don't think these are coming from the same factory as RR. My pics are not that good, but you can get an idea.

JPD nice knife. if you search this forum for "Colt", you'll see quite a few of these.
Here is my most recent Colt and it really is a substantial knife especially as it is only 3 1/2". Scales are smooth black bone.

I'm not sure when these were made, but the model numbers are in the 600s and they are now up to about 1100, so they are probably from 2-4 years ago. I have acquired these over the last couple years. It is one of the better RR series, along with the gunstock and sawcut bone. Fit and finish of all five are Case quality, and I averaged paying about $20 apiece for them. Very nice burnt stag and razor sharp blades. Oh, if they only made these in carbon steel!

From top left: 3-1/2" whittler, 3-1/2" mini-trapper, 3-3/4" sowbelly, 3-3/4" copperhead, 3-5/8" canoe.
All five are definitely pocket worthy.

I've been raving about Rough Riders here on BF for over 3 years now. I've got over 100 of them and not even one is a 'bummer' so i've had a lot to rave about.
Well i just received my latest RR at a total cost of $13.01 and it is simply ridiculous. More ridiculous than all of the others. Some of the nicest Pearl i have ever seen (including a $3000 Don Hanson, and quite a few 100+ yr. old Sheffield masterpieces), buttery smooth action, 100% tight lock up, and, as always, pops the hairs off my arm with ease. Wanna see it ? O.K. here goes:

Ridiculous for $13.01.

I'm not a fan of big multiblades but i've been buying a few of the 6 blade RR Stockman knives. The design is exceptionally good as is the fit. Here's a couple to show what i mean:

Those are half sunk joints, meaning, the corner of the tang is almost as low as the frame when the blades are closed. That requires a really good design of all the components and is more often found on higher end knives.
And the blade spine/spring interface is very good as well. No 'steps' here:

And what a great array of useful blades:

Mind you these are more expensive, from $15-$20. Ridiculous !

I think 713, 732, and i have a 739(?) as well.
Easy to find if you shop on ebay, just search "Rough Rider 6". there are at least 5 different ones.
