Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

just placed an order for a one hand trapper gunstock, 6 blade stockman bowie, and moonshiner congress. Cant wait to get them in the mail, Ive heard so much good things about rough riders and these are my first. Im really use to case's so my hopes are high. At 40$ for 3 knives I feel pretty good though cause thats about one good case knife. Ill post my thoughts when I get them

I've been looking for a knife between the two blade folding hunter and the pocket hunter. This thread convinced me to check the RR line. I found a large copperhead and a jumbo trapper that should fit the bill. They'll arrive in 7 to 10 days!

I came across this auction for a RR barlow. I know they're regarded as being pretty well made, but I'm not convinced they're worth the cost. Even if they are marked down.

(auction was for a RR barlow with a BIN price of $1269.00)

:D

(please don't infract me for auction spotting, it's a joke)

I recently bought 2 knives from that seller. really nice, no problems at all.
So what's the idea of having a crazy high BIN price ?
I don't 'get it'.

He's probably out of stock. Everything he has listed says "8 available". Rather than removing the item and relisting it, he just made the price something that nobody would pay. That's my guess anyway, I'm not the most ebay-savvy; I've never even sold anything myself there, only purchased.

at least the shipping is free :)

I've seen other ebay sellers do that. A $17 kindle cover that was out of stock listed for $199. I hope no one accidentally buys it. :D

i was getting them for 12.00 when i had a little extra change.
they are some really nice knives.
i only have the single blade trappers, and a whittler.
i really like em,but think they may already be out of business?
anyone know?
have you seen the tates creek?
sweet,

Got 5 slippies in yesterday, these being 2 of them, twin US Classic Moose.

Came in a rather plain rough cartboard box, hinges open, but the knife is nicely packed in thin waxed paper. 4-1/4″ long, 11/16″ wide, and a great feeling 9/16 thick. Solid feel, heavy in the hand. A wide long wide frame much like The Remington Moose I have. Much thicker and heavier that my Case Moose. Well define match strike pull on the spey blade, and a nice match strike long pull on the clip. Thick blades and springs, and has a center liner.

Bone is thick and well fit, no gaps at bolster to bone, or bone to liners. Tang stamped US CLASSIC over Salt River, KY on the main(clip) blade front, and 440 over Razor Edge, over 07 on the back of the second blade(spey). U.s. CASSIC etch on the back of the main blade. Straight even edges that came sharp! Half stops on both blades, the spey a nice 4.5 to 5 on the pull scale like Case, the clip blade a 7, stronger than even the famed GEC springs, but thanks to that long pull, rather nice to open.

While I am not a fan of the burnt grooved stag look, this bone has a nice faded brown to tan around the edges, and the groove is only about 1/16″ deep, making it not too rough to hold, and not a bad look. Dual lines at the bolsters is a nice touch, narrow and understated but elegant none the less. Bomb shield is well inlet, and the pointing hound stamped into it is different, but nice. All the handle pins have well rounded heads. One knife has a hair line crack in the bone at the center spring pin, the other does not.

All in all, the build and fit is a step above Rough Rider, and extremely closely rivals Case in all fit, while favoring my preference is thicker and heavier than the Case. At around $25 each, double the average Rough Rider of this size, yet still under (about 1/2 of)Case retail, a marvelous value.

RR Scout came in the mail today. Gap in the back, but a nice knife for a little cash.

Vortex, that's a beauty! Does it look as good in person as it does in the pics? How about a review?

That Boker is very nice looking. I'd love to try one out to see how the 440c compares to the 440a.

Certainly does look good, any specs?

Thanks! :)
It's quite pretty in person too. The fit and finish is good, there's only a smaller gap between one of the brass liners and the "lockback". The lockup is firm with zero vertical and a hardly sensible horizontal bladeplay. It feels comfortable in the hand without any sharp edges, so I'm satisfied with it.

Specs:
3 3/4" closed with a 2.87" (73mm) 440C blade.
The cutting edge is ~2.48"(63mm).

The gap:

One more thought: the grind of the edge was uneven nearby the tip, so I reprofiled it.

I got three rough riders today, two for me one for a friend. The blade finish is horrible, looks like they polished it then took a wire wheel to half of it. Fit and finish is good, better than the Buck knives I've owned and used. They came pretty dull though, especially the hawk bill I got.

Overall great purchase for under 10$ a piece.

damn unlucky! every one I've received had great blade finish and hair popping sharp.

i love that boker.
looks really expensive.

as for the rr,and others...i think there all nice,i have several
really nice ones...been really lucky on fit and finish....i do believe that
there are some on these auction sites that are either seconds or
returns that somneone is getting dirt cheap and then moving them
at auction.
can't prove that, but a few i have bought really cheap had some
quality issues that were more likely picked up on,laid aside and
moved on to the auction site.

my best looking knives have came from u.s.classic,tates creek, ocoee river, white tail, rough rider, steel warrior, and the new hammer brand.
.....got a doctors knife from one of the tv shows from ocoee river for dirt cheap...it has semi=precious stones and file work on back.
i'll post some pictures(best i can)if anyone wants to see it.i think some of
these names are gone already, but not sure.hadn't seen any newer u.s.classics in awhile.
thanks,
jd

I just got in the three that I ordered after christmas, from just handeling them today they seem pretty good. I got a moonshiner congress, a gunstock one hand trapper, and a 6 blade bowie stockman. I do have little quips about all three of them both nothing huge. the blade on the one hand trapper has quite a bit of wiggle in it closed, and just a litte open, the moonshiners spear point blade dosnt close as far down as I wish it would but thats not really that bad it dosnt stick up or anything just more so than I think it should. The last thing is that I dropped the 6 blade stockman and it hit my desk chairs wheel and a small sliver of the scale broke off right under the middle rivet. All in all they are great knives for the money, but I still prefer my case's for the f&f.
