Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

I can't wait to have a kid and give some of these little guys to them for a collection starter...I really want them to look back and when they think "knife" they get a vision of an old time slip joint pattern. But this little stockman I put in my pocket last night and at the Cinema it was PERFECT to open the little packets.

I would love to start buying up the RR 2" models and make a miniature display case to put in my man cave and open a new niche to my collecting. I would love some of the old Henckels, I remember seeing pics on here of one (might have been in the old knives thread).

Instead of starting a new thread I thought I'd just tack this one on the running RR thread.

My Brother-in-law and sister-in-law went on vacation to the Smoky mountains last week. While there they called me from inside SMKW. She said she wanted to bring me a souvenir and wanted to know what kind of knives I liked.

I've never been big on people spending money on me while they are on vacation so I went to SMKW's site and picked a cheap RR Half Whittler, gave her the part # and figured that, if they were going to buy me a knife, I'd feel better if it was under $10.

They came home today and gave me my gifts. Of course they spent more than I wanted them to.

These will be put to use and I'll post a full report soon. So far, both have a small ding where the edge strikes the back spring. Other than that, they aren't half bad.

The Moonshine was an unexpected gift. I could post a report on that too :p.

I touched up my RR canoe and sodbuster last night. Wow, really easy to sharpen. Now if the sodbuster only didn't have that liner lock in it to mess up my grip...

Has anyone tried the RR kits, where you get the parts and assemble the knife? I thought that might be some cheap fun.

Following up dalee's comments on the sanmai lock back: whatever this steel is it's pretty damn good. My hands are corrossive it seems and not a spot on the metal anywhere. I haven't used as hard as Dale, but havent had to touch it up at all over months of carry.

I ordered a couple of the stockman kits. I intend to haft them with my own handles. Are there any tutorials on Bladeforums about jigging bone?

I ordered one of these, I love tombstone and this I intend to mod before even trialing it as a camp knife (and if it breaks I can use the fittings for a carbon blade project)...will post a bit of a review and pics of my initial thoughts when it comes in, wont be able to field test it till december or so.

Has anyone tried the RR bowies out?

I had a hankering for some traditional-lookin' slippies and saw these down at the local brick & mortar a few weeks ago... not too bad at all! Genuine pearl and abalone on the Half-Whittler (just like the one Chris posted) and a yeller Lockback Canoe. I'm really coming around on the Canoe... it's a great companion for my friction folder!

Robert, i have a few of the really big RR fixed blades (but not the one you show) and they seem to be "real" knives, not made just for show. In-hand balance is good as is the blade grind and fit and finish of all parts. I have yet to try one of these but my guess is they will work as well as the RR folders, i.e. they are working knives and do the type of cutting (or chopping) that the size and profile lends itself to.
I'll take some pics when i get back to my knives and then take one of these big choppers out and do some hacking and see what happens.

Sounds good to me, for the price if they hold up to a bit of abuse I'll consider it money well spent...I'm really excited to get her and take that mirror polish off, will prolly do a medium grit block finish (do some circular rubs to give it a stone wash type finish) so its more a working knife.

Picked up a Camco 3 blade "workhorse" a couple years ago and am really impressed for the 8$ I paid.
Keeps a pretty good edge and not bad looking in brass and black g-10

Not so impressed with the 3 blade Roughrider for the same cash. The spey blade has a 20% bend in it and the bone scales popping off badly due to 4 of the 6 copper rivets not being peened at all.
Don`t know if it holds an edge or not being a little uncomfortable to hold due to scales and annoying to look at.

Anyone else have roughrider lemons or good Camco`s

Hi,

How do you like the fit and finish of your Boker+? I'm kind of tempted to invest in one like yours. I kind of want to have more than just a Buck for a stainless choice to carry.

The f&f is fine the walk & talk is fine also. I will say a 9 over 10.
I really dont know the 440C quality but I tink is better than the 440A.

Hey guys I received the tombstone Bowie, it looks decent BUT I was not aware they are not made by their Chinese operation...it has PAKISTAN etched in really small letters on it, is this the same as the bowies you guys have? anything with Pakistan on it usually has me weary because they're renowned for poor product but so is china so I'll be giving it the benefit of the doubt. The stag is actually quite nice, not ground into the core like the stock standard RR picture and the blade grind appears nice.

Will have pics tonight. :)

I haven't seen "Pakistan" on any of my RR knives, folders or fixed blades. I agree with "giving benefit of the doubt". The world is continually changing. Some of the knives from China are the best in production. So Pakistan could be next.
That cannot be decided based on 1 knife, but i would like to hear what happens if you set up a few 'tests' for it.

I wouldn't be too surprised. Whoever owns the brand doesn't seem too married to any particular manufacturer or country. There's a Rough Rider machete-like Bowie/Paratrooper made in El Salvador, I'll bet by by Imacasa/Condor. They also seem to have sourced knives from different manufacturers in China.
