Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

Wow. I didn't know there were any Rough Riders made in Pakistan. I'm shocked!

I was too at first, my wife opened it over webcam (because I'm in Australia still and the knife is at my US address) and said "Pakistan" which threw me as I figured all RR knives were Chinese made.

I haven't seen "Pakistan" on any of my RR knives, folders or fixed blades. I agree with "giving benefit of the doubt". The world is continually changing. Some of the knives from China are the best in production. So Pakistan could be next.
That cannot be decided based on 1 knife, but i would like to hear what happens if you set up a few 'tests' for it.

This is exactly how I feel, I intend to take it out and put it through a few tests once I'm back over...really the worst that can happen is it fails and I used the handle and fittings for another project, plus the sheath is pretty stout/thick leather...I mean China can be hit and miss too depending on brand, Rough Rider seems to have a little bit better quality control on the companies producing its knives.

I wouldn't be too surprised. Whoever owns the brand doesn't seem too married to any particular manufacturer or country. There's a Rough Rider machete-like Bowie/Paratrooper made in El Salvador, I'll bet by by Imacasa/Condor. They also seem to have sourced knives from different manufacturers in China.

I didn't know that, thanks for posting it, I kinda want that now too :D

PS. Pics tomorrow, wife got side tracked so I'll get the images off her tomorrow.

It is a pretty good knife for the price and until I can test it on some items you would use a large fixed blade on its all aesthetically speaking...as you can see Pakistan on the blade which will come off when I put a stone wash on the blade finish and crisp the grinds up :)

It's a very nice looking knife... I bought a Marbles branded Damascus fixed blade skinner that's made in Pakistan. It's very nice, well made and the blade has the nicest production Damascus I've ever seen

I find this all very interesting. My impressions of Pakistan steel have not been good up to this point. The initial impressions from others in this thread are the first positive ones I have ever read.

Thank you for posting those pics Robert.B. The knife looks very nice! Thank you JPD1998 for sharing your impressions of the damascus.

I have an open mind on this subject and I am looking forward to further impressions on these knives from Pakistan.

Here's a few pictures.

I bought this as a gift and then decided to keep it after I opened the box :)

Wow! I've never seen damascus quite like it before.

It almost looks textured in the photos. Is it smooth to the touch?

You can feel the folds with your fingernail, Marbles calls this "cable damascus". I was thinking of getting a Bowie style too.

Yes,its cable.I see some voids, but thats a darn good looking knife for the money noone can deny.

I agree that that's some kind of cable damascus, though that type of steel usually has a much smoother, tighter "stained-glass window" look to it:

It would be interesting to see how well that RR would stand up to some real use. Most of the Pakistan steel in my experience would either bend or break if you looked at it cross-eyed, but I'm sure that manufacturing has improved considerably over there since the bad old junk-knife days.

Thats how I always felt having got a few Pakistan made knives in my youth, but really rough rider seem to keep their nose reasonably clean with foreign manufacturer so I'd be guessing they have set tolerances they give to keep each knife in the price range they have in mind but not push prospective buyers away.

Roland, I've got one of those stag stockman also. It has some of the nicest stag on any knife of mine short of custom.

Also notice the hidden tangs and the low profile of the sheepfoot blade. A wonderful EDC folder.

A very sleek Stockman that Jeff. I like low riding Sheepfoot, suspect you get less of a clumsy feel when holding it too. The handful of blades feel with some Stockmans can be off-putting, to my mind.

Like that Caper fixed blade as well, good bone.

I just got one of the smooth amber bone locking stockmans (4") and one of the armadillo Hawkbills as well as the 5 and 3/8" whittler's knives. All were razor sharp and very nicely done. I know I'll be getting a few more.

ok fellas,i have several rough riders and love em all...
have had only one that needed attention at all.

but i am interested in your opinions of the Steel Warriors?

Thanks in advance, and will chime in again later.

I just picked up this little Rough Rider Dogleg Stockman (pattern #890) last weekend, and I'm surprised to say how much I'm lovin' it!
I usually prefer larger knives, but this is just about the smallest pattern that I have "fallen" for at 3-3/8" closed.
The master clip blade is 2-7/16" from bolster to tip, with the sheepfoot coming in at 2-1/16" and the little spey at 1-15/16".

The soft, milky yellow comp handles with badge shield are reminiscent of older knives, although I'm not sure of the historicity of this dogleg stockman pattern.
It shows no light between liners or scales, came with all three blades razor sharp, and the pulls without half-stops are a smooth 5-6.
It feels great in hand and to be painfully honest, it gives me more pleasure and satisfaction than any $10 knife ever should.
You guys and gals that like smaller knives should DEFINITELY check this one out!  :)

Jeff's picture of this knife really interested me. He very kindly offered to help me get hold of one but the same day, my usual supplier e-mailed me that he had one on its way to me, happy co-incidence.

I've been very pleased with this useful and out of the ordinary pattern, so much so that I bought another one in different scales. This is a dark reddish purple jigged bone with the RR Propellor shield - much nicer than their coin shield. Fit and finish very good and a welcome addition. It is called RR 406 for those who are interested.
