here is a knife i put together with the leftover liners from
a couple rough rider 2 blade trapper kits.
when i try assembly of these kits i only use one of
the blades because i like the looks of the slim trappers
better.
so i always have one liner and one blade leftover from
my kit knives.

i took 2 liners,and a spey blade,pin it to a couple slabs
of curly maple that i dyed magenta.

next one i think i'll solder some bolsters to the ends of
the liners and see how that turns out.
i had been saving my money to buy a piece of equipment
here and there hoping to someday make my own knives
from scratch.
but with the economy the way it is i feel Blessed to even
be able to assemble these kits.

i love making something my own,and this is a start.

i know it's kinda diffrent, but that's all i had to work with at
the time.

The knife hasn't been sharpened yet,but it has been
peened well, and i would not hesitate to use it once it
is sharp....It has no wobbles, and great snap on closing.

I haven't bought any RR's, mostly because of the point of origin. That and even though th ereviews are great here, it's just hard to grasp the fact that a 7-10 dollar knife can be decent.
My son found a couple on the big auction site that he really likes, but I've been hesitant to let him get them. I raised him on Case and Schrades, and even a couple Camillus knives. The only exception was a Steel Warrior that he really wanted a few years back. The biggest reason he wanted it was because it was his favorite color. Blue..
When that one arrived, there hadn't been many reviews on the RR's and other similar knives. I wasn't expecting much when I took it out of the box, but I was more than pleasantly surprised. Fit and finish is good, blades have good snap, and they were actually sharp.

I'm thinking I will order the two that he wants and surprise him. Heck, for a total of about 16 bucks shipped, it will be a good experiment, and he won't be afraid to carry and use them. He carries his others, but has a fear of losing them. If he lost one of the RR's, it won't be a huge crisis and we could replace it cheaply.
I'll keep ya updated...

BTW, I did a search, but didn't find much info on the lockbacks. Anyone have any input regarding those models ? One of them he wants is a lockback

I have lots of RR lockback knives (60 ??). All are excellent, 100% tight lockup. Depressing the release is a bit stiff in a few of them, but that's the same with all brands including USA ones. My favorite is a smallish one ( ~ 3 1/8" ?), yellow handles, spearpoint blade. i don't have it with me to be anymore exact, but all of them are fine knives and very satisfying to own.
It's an American company too.

Thanks Roland.

Received a 2 3/4" stockman, shown here compared to the faithful Case Peanut. Micarta scales and rounded bolsters. This is a solid knife for $9 delivered. No light shines through the liners, no blade play to speak of, quite sharp. Makes a great gift or slacks carry.

Just curious how folks rough riders are holding up over time
everyone seems to be pleased with how they arrive when new, but for the folks that have been edc'ing rough riders for 4-5+ years, are they holding up like you would hope?

I've been using some of mine over a year and held up fine...still tight, I only got my first in 2009 though. :)

The last one I had left was the damascus lockback which seems to have grown legs, I don't blame whoever took it too much as it was a damn handsome knife. I'll say that all the RRs I've bought that were of good quality (you'll get a lemon now and then, 1/5 or so) survived until I parted with them. The first one I bought about 4 years ago, a locking toothpick or "french tickler," still faithfully serves a petite young lady in Texas well as her purse knife. My own mother still owns and uses the Ocean Wave Blue Pearl Canoe I ordered a few years back. I'd say the only weaknesses the RRs had over time was either the dye from the scales sometimes bleeding, and that they don't hold the razor edge I like for very long. They'll take and hold a working edge for a good while, but the hair-popping razor edge I like dissipates fast(not the damascus lockback though, held and kept a fine edge). Other than that none of them have failed me yet, however I usually don't hold on to them for long compared to knives of more quality (accept the damascus lockback, great little knife).

.....I also miss my damascus lockback :(

+1 to everything Javelin said. I've given away most of my RRs, mainly because they don't hold an edge nearly as well as my Queens, Cases, etc. The F+F is usually very good, but what is the point if the steel is sub-par? The damascus lockback, on the other hand has held a very fine edge for close to a year now with regular use. The blade is prone to rust, even with a coat of oil - but it is the only RR I own that is in my regular carry rotation.

Isn't SMKW the company that owns or runs Rough Rider? I've been waiting atleast a good year now for them to release a damascus anything since I first handled the lockback. It's had great success, reviews, and sold out fairly fast so I kind of expected them to take note of this and release more of the damascus line, however it seems they haven't. I'd be willing to send a couple letters to request they produce more of that line.

I've a few RR Traditionals and like most of them a good deal. They seem to be holding up well. One in particular: A Scout knife in Amber Bone has been opening beer or cider bottles for over 2 years, it gets a rough life (and plenty of use...) being left in pools of liquid, been in the sink a few times and gets slung in the drawer on and off. Still just fine!

Willgoy, my experience is the same. A couple of my RR's i've used on and off for 3-4 years now, mostly out in the "garden" (really about 4 acres of gardens), cutting branches, cord, etc. and i haven't resharpened them yet, but they could do with a touch up. No heavy cutting like tin or wire. I use one of my Farid knives with exotic steels and high Rc's (~ 64) for that.
I think the very low price of RR knives leads some of us to believe that there must be a weakness or downside, but in most of them there isn't. If they haven't failed or proved inferior by 3 years of use, then they won't, and can be expected to last as long as the more expensive Traditional folders.
Maybe RR will come out with a "Premium Line" with a top end steel like 154CM for a higher price, but still a bargain.

i have used this muskrat to cut everything you can imagine.
It's been dropped,beat,and mis-used as well.But it has been a good
one so far.
Still just as tight as the day I bought it.....It's not one of my favorite
patterns so I have used it a little more destructively than normal.
Very pleased so far,
JD

I like this 2-blade doctor's knife. It's my only RR. Fit and finish are very good considering the price.

I've been looking to pick up a RR Doctor's knife and I really like the look of the "pearl" in the handle of yours. Where did you happen to purchase it?
