Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

Good review ! I like the overall profile of that somewhat traditional, Al Mar-esque folder. Also I couldn't help but notice your Canoe that is in the fantastic "Armor Hide".

Gents, Gary did not make the original call. I did.
If you have an issue with my calls, you may discuss them with me in a PM. Keep it out of the threads.

Above frickin' all, do not take Gary to task for a call that he did not even make.

And be advised that I pretty much work 12 hour days during the week and have no access to BF from work, so I may be slow answering your PM.

Frank, what are you talking about ?
NOBODY called Gary "to task".
There is no need or purpose served by being over-bearing or defensive.
This thread is going along just fine with many interesting knives being shown and lots of helpful friendly discussion.
None of us are having a problem.
Maybe posting in red after a 12 hour workday is not a good idea.

*sigh*

I thought the screaming red all bold text was more than a little surprising myself.

I didn't see anyone antagonizing or criticizing Gary in any way.... did someone delete a post?

I thought we were pretty clear on how much we appreciated Gary.

This is why it is much easier, and many times much better for me to just read the threads and not participate. I can't figure out what happened here and without help, might never. I thought there was ongoing intelligent discourse about traditional knives happening, but I would like to apologize to Gary if I upset him or if he felt he was unfairly criticized.

Still don't know what is going on, though...

I have decided that when I order the RR Camp knives for our annual Troop Christmas 'sneaky Santa' gift exchange I'm going to pick up one of their other patterns for myself. I like to find "affordable" knives, comes from being on watch forums where guys show Rolexes next to Timex, not easy to moderate but what is affordable to some is unobtanium for another.

What would you who have a lot of RR recommend for a pattern, stockman, barlow, trapper, whittler? I usually lean towards stockman and whittlers though I have no shortage of any pattern (I think! :D) I do like that "dog bone" knife too, as my Border Collie nudges me for a scratch while I'm typing!

Thanks!
Griff

Hi there Griff You can't go wrong with their Barlow which they make in quite a number of handle materials, great knife. The have a number of whittlers that good knives but the one that comes to mind is their Boxcar whittler, a real workhorse. Rough rider has a great line of traditional patterns including the stockman and trapper. They have a whole line of trappers including the jumbo which is a heck of a nice heavy bush knife. Added a pic with the Jumbo trapper the boxcar whittler and a peanut for scale.

It's not easy to recommend one RR pattern because all of them are consistently very well made and rather 'tough' (i.e. will take a moderate amount of abuse. They do make a Scout pattern and these are always useful with the choice of blades for a variety of tasks. They make a variety of single blade lockbacks. I think i have at least one of each and all are excellent and the relative safety of a LB might be a good idea for children.
I suggest you try to get a variety of handle materials so the kids will be less likely to get mixed up as to which is their knife.

Most scout troops here in Ontario will only allow locking blades for scout carry. I do talks with many scout troops on knife care, safe use and sharpening. Rough riders are the perfect brand to introduce the many patterns to new knife users at a price that's hard to beat for the quality.

I'm away from the stash, but there's a Stockman I have with near enough sunk joints that I like a great deal. It has an unusual frame shape rather like a Norfolk, i.e. one bolster much wider than another. This comes in jigged bone or yellow delrin. Very well worth trialing.

EDIT see post 720 for a picture of this Dogleg Stockman

Thanks, Will

We gave two of the chestnut bone Camper/Scouts to my Scouts last year. The guys who have them are older ones who have had a slippie or two close on them back when they were Cub Scouts and know what they can and can't (or shouldn't) do with a non-lock blade. I saw them in use at summer camp so I know they were going strong 8 months after they got 'em. I was thinking I'd get at least one red bone and one chestnut this year. My only complaint with RR's camper is it's only in two colors!
I had a red bone camper for awhile and gave it to one of my Scouts this past summer when they were awarded their "Totin' Chip", which means they did the Boy Scouts knife and bladed tool safety instruction. I like to do a reinforcement twice a year, once in fall then again in spring, just in case they 'forgot' how to handle a knife. Thankfully I haven't had to clip any one's Chip card and I hope I never do. But I will if I see improper handling, and have a discussion with the Scout and their parents.

Will, that stockman looks interesting, and I've been thinking about another Barlow. The nice thing is that they aren't expensive, and if I want to try another I can always find a Scout who needs a knife.

Here is my RR Jumbo trapper in amber bone. The little doctors knife is 3 1/8" closed. I can't wait to order some other patterns. Maybe a stockman, or a barlow.

Harry, RR makes a Stockman with a lockback master Clip blade. It is a very nicely made knife that i'm sure you would like.

Thanks! Yeah, I really like the Armor Hide, too. I also have a small 1-blade lockback Barlow in it - I think I need more now :)

They look really nice. I wonder, since the sheepsfoot blade sticks out so much, does that make it uncomfortable in hand when using the other blades?

I gave this knife to my doctor 6 or 8 months ago. When i came in for a checkup last month he was raving about how great the knife was.He took it to a cattle roundup where they were cutting young bulls.Everyones knife was dull or performing poorly and that Rough Rider performed better than anything in the field. It went home well used, but still holding an edge. Those cowboys couldn't wait to get into town and shop for a Rough Rider.I slipped him one of the trapperliner styles this last time.Another nicely copied pattern.Kind of a Bokerliner, kind of a trapperlock.

Harry, the one i have in-hand right now is RR1073, 3 7/8", jigged bone, i find quite comfortable holding it with the Clip blade open.
Whoops ! Sorry, i just realized this is a LB Whittler ! I think i gave the Stockman to a friend.

I've got my "Dog Bone Jack!" I think it is an interesting pattern, I've never seen anything quite like it before!

Here it is with my other Rough Rider knives. It is a medium sized knife, slightly smaller than the stockman. It is larger than I expected it to be:

img3075ya.jpg

It comes with a nice pocket pouch that has a pocket clip:

img3078pc.jpg

Here's issue #1, someone got a little frisky with the sander! A smooth spot in the jigging. Also the clip on the pocket pouch:

A couple of ways to carry:

Nice drop point blade with a great swedge! I love the match strike long pull. No half-stop, and good lock up and snap. Compared to the stockman's drop point:

img3102zh.jpg

It has a small spey blade. I like the profile as it is a small and pointy spey, with a useful tip. It is almost a pen blade. Issue #2 is this blade has some vertical blade play. I think this may be because of the room made for the lanyard mount. I'm not sure about this, though, as it does have a half stop, and seems to be pretty solid when at the half stop position. There isn't any side to side play whatsoever. Compared with the stockman's spey:

Nice swedge on the back side:

Here's a top-down shot, a nice, thin knife!:

A picture of the spring side. Issue #3, there are some gaps.

Here's the lanyard mount, with the spey blade closed and open:

The Whistle! For it's tiny size, it is really loud! It would actually work well for a signalling device:

img3128qo.jpg

I really like this knife! It has more issues than my other Rough Rider knives, but they don't get in the way of its function at all. It has some great features. I love the slim profile, and the rounded bolsters. The pocket pouch is great! The whistle is a neat feature and is loud. I like the blade selection, and the swedges and the long pull are great additions. All in all a fun knife! I may order another one in the future, to see if I can get one with less fit and finish issues, but I really can't complain, as I got all this for ten bucks!
