Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

Just for fun, here's another pic of my only other RR.

Are they a decent knife for $10? Yep.

Will they ever replace the Queen in my pocket? Nope.

RR makes a large stockman that seems to be a good worker. I prefer the pattern with the squared off bolsters ( a little over 4"). It comes in a variety of scales including yellow composition.

I also have a ram's horn sowbelly marked with the Smith & Wesson brand, I use that one around the yard and it is holding up pretty well.

markksr,

Help me out if you can. When you say, "a decent knife for $10. Yep."

What exactly do you mean? A decent knife for $10. to use, to collect, or what?

JPD1998,

Thank you very kindly!. That's a good start.

I mean that, were I not a knife nut, educated by this great site in the finer details of metallurgy and how it relates to knives, I would be quite satisfied with a RR knife.

That being said, I don't carry them because they just don't inspire that pride of ownership that I get from better knives made from better quality materials.

But I do enjoy looking at them from time to time and would not hesitate to carry them if I had a reason not to carry something better...

Fair enough. Thank you for your input.

sunnyd,

Do you want the two I posted (Canoe and Tint Trapper)? Posts 91 and 104.

I'd like to keep at as close to $10. plus shipping as possible. But yes, which one do you think is the toughest and let me know how much, total?

Thank you for making this easier than going through eBay.

Close to $10... hmmm...

Tell ya what. Drop me an e-mail at Rupestris@gmail.com with your address and I'll get these off to you as soon as I can. I think I still have the boxes.

These were given to me by a RR fan and all he asked in return was that I do an honest review.

If you can, take a look at them, use them for a while then let us know what you think. If you want 'em, keep 'em. If not, pass them along to someone else to test.

I was given an early Christmas gift from my son today. An old beat up meat cleaver that is begging to be turned into a shadetree Nessmuk (I do a little knife tinkering to keep me sane during these Michigan winters). Since I had some good knife fortune today, I think I should pass some on.

Sorry. got a little long winded...:p

I am a big fan of the Cold Steel Hawks but there is a huge difference between a good one and a bad one so being able to dig through a box and find a nice one makes it worth paying a little more from a local store than buying them on the net. I wonder if you could
do the same with a big pile of RR's and be sure of getting a good one then you would definitly be getting your 10$ worth?

I like the Chinese made Buck slippies. I got one for my Grandfather as a gift and he loves it. The chinese made Spydercos are getting good as well so I would not be surprised if the RR's start getting more consistent.

Gentlemen, PLEASE keep transactions off this forum. That means no sales, offer of sales or trades (except for slipjoint swaps in the appropriate thread).

Sorry Blues. My mistake.
If it makes things better, these arent being sold. These are give-aways.

I wouldn't have offered if my intention was anything other than a freebie to another fan of slipjoints.

That was understood from the beginning, Chris. You and Anthony are stalwarts here on the forum but we just need to nip potential issues in the bud so we don't end up having to deal with 'em later on. Thanks.

Anthony,
You've probably got fixed up by now but you might consider the RR Trapper or Copperhead in the Gunstock finish. This term is not to do with the pattern Gunstock-a rather too square and bulky customer for my tastes-but the chequered jigging on the bone. They come in dark brown or dark green and they might well prove viable. Good snap on the ones I have, they put Canal St wimpy springs to shame I regret to say:eek:

They do cost a bit more than 10USD more like 12 but they seem alright.

Best wishes,
W

W,

Thanks for your input. Its always most appreciated when others here are able to enlighten me about their expertise.

As a matter of fact, thanks to EVERYONE for all your ideas here and the inspiration you provided. I always learn so much from you folks. This is a great place to be.

I was extremely fortunate to have Rupestris offer two separate traditional pocket knife patterns recently produced by Rough Rider that he was gracious enough to allow me to use for this latest edc review I am going to conduct. I am looking forward to utilizing these two knives for a comparison to measure how they hold up to the typical riggers of daily use compared to 4 years ago, when last I used the 1st generation offerings.

After the testing reviews are concluded, Rupestris asked me to give these slipjoints to others so they may also have the opportunity to enjoy them as well, in the same spirit of passing it forward.. Of coarse I agreed, and already had several young people in mind who would love to have them for they're own.

I was intending to test the knives myself at first and pass them on afterwards.. However, after thinking about this for a spell, I thought of an even better idea!. I am now going to instead involve the two budding traditional pocket knife enthusiasts that were ultimately going to be the recipients of these slipjoint knives anyhow, and have them preform the direct testing review process itself under my supervision..

I figure it will be perfect timing as the group of young folks whom I have been mentoring will all be engaged in a whittling contest the week before Christmas anyway. Plus, it will serve as several additional Holiday gifts to go to these children that they would otherwise not have received, thanks now to the kind generosity of Rupestris!

I will oil the joints, sharpen and wipe 'em down prior to gifting them to the young'ens. Then commence the cutting projects for them.

Subsequent reports here on the performance review testing and a few photographs will be forthcoming posted if there is any interest.

A big Thank You again in advance Rupestris for playing Santa in the lives of these young pup's!. You will be putting a pair of nice smiles on their faces this Christmas Holiday season to be sure.

Merry Christmas Everyone,

Anthony

I saw somewhere on this thread that I could make Kool-Aid with a RR...so I ran out and got me one on the Bay...I haven't had Kool-Aid since Viet Nam...only 1 minute they said it would take...I was excited!!!!

Both of my Red Bone RRs (shown above) bled a little when they were fresh out of the box. When I noticed the red stains on my fingers I went to try to rub some more off of the knives to verify where it had come from but was unable. Nevertheless, I'm certain it came from the RRs, but it has never happened again.

I just got this one a few days ago ($9.99) , it's white smooth bone. Overall it's about 3 3/4 inches. The springs are a little tight and the bone has hairline fractures on both sides near the middle pins (the vendor's site specifies that the bone might have fractures near the pins). Other than the hairline cracks the construction of this knife is pretty good.

I will add that I cut myself because the bone is a little slippery, I punctured the palm of my hand while fumbling with it.

You guys are being mean to your RR knives ;-) Now those of you who are trying to make cool aid, get some light mineral oil and do something nice for your knives and soak them in the oil . ;-))) Rayban,, how do you like the sodbuster?

Regards to all
