Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

Thanks for saying that Midnight.
Funny how all the anti offshore comments get through.

Just a small note on the subject of country of origin - for another perspective. I'm from a small country called Sweden so most knives I buy is made overseas in one way or another, that is USA or Taiwan! Theoretically I could walk to China if I so see fit. :)

Here are a couple of great knives that I don't believe they make any more. The jumbo trapper and the boxcar whittle.

Best regards

Robin

Don't know about the jumbo trapper, but the boxcar whittler is still around.

Oops, wrong about the boxcar whittler. I was looking at the Marbles Sleeveboard Whittler - very similar.

Q: Are Colt knives made by the same factory as RR and Marbles? I've several Colt's and they seem to be of quite good quality equal to the RR and Marbles.

That trapper is ENORMOUS! Lovely looking knives though, that Whittler too. How's its construction compared to the Whittlers on the previous page (the ones with the clip point main blade)?

Hi Rich
I do believe that the RR and the Colts are made in the same factory and the Colt is a step up from the RR.

Best regards

Robin

If you are talking about the swell center whittler there is no comparison, the swell center is wayyy under built IMO, the boxcar is
well, a boxcar. :D

Yes Colt is made in the RR factory and now that Kevin Pipes owns the Marble name so are the Marbles pocket knives. Most of the Marbles fixed blades are mad in Pakistan.

I'm gonna buy one of those 4 bladed w/caplifter Stockmans that were featured in another thread. Looks like an awesome knife. I've also never had a peanut, so I might get one of those too.

I saw the same one and it caught my attention right away. I just wish the closed length was a bit shorter. I'll probably still pick it up though

Does Colt make a standard barlow (like the RR bone stag or smooth bone barlows)? All I can find is a small pink ladies Colt barlow. Better yet, a genuine stag standard size barlow! If not, how do we get them to make one!!??

Looks like there are some out there!

Though I don't think they are being produced any longer.

I received this RR067 in R.c.s.' GAW. There are more pics in that thread. This is really a beautiful knife. It's about the same size as a Buck 110, the handle is much thinner. I like the white bone.

Ok, sorry to drag this one out as this is an RR thread, but I picked up one of the Colt (Black Stag Bone) Barlow's last year, and I really like it. It came in a cool little form fit display box. Pretty darn nice knife for well under $30. I have a bunch of Colt's and RR's, and always wondered if they were made in the same factory because they are very similar in fit/finish to each other. Although most of the Colt's seem just a tad more refined in finish, and have had slightly better edge grinds on most.

I tried to buy one of each style in the Black Stag Bone series, but there were just a couple of crossover's with the 175th Anniversary's that had both the etching, and the Anni inlay's, along with the Simu-RaySkin Box. The Barlow was one, and I think the others were a 4 blade Stockman, and maybe a Sowbelly (I think).

Just received the whittler I ordered and I am very impressed. Got it with shipping for $13 dollars. Great walk and talk and no funky issues with the handle or the bolsters. I'll try to past a pic later.

Found the Colt barlow (two versions); the 175th anniv. is CT251A and the plain (no etching) is CT251.

Wow incision I'm really taken to that RR067 give away and looking at one on-line now and may just have to pull the trigger on that one.

That Bark Bone is one of my favourites so far from RR! Mine have really good F&F and is a really good EDC.

My latest purchase - a Whittler. It's my first try at this pattern.

Here's my latest Rough Rider. It's a lockback mini-canoe; 3 inches closed. I love my regular RR canoe, and hope the same will be true of this scaled-down version. My real reason for getting it is that I like to mess around with whittling, and smaller blades work better for me. So this has two sizes of spearpoint (pen) blades, both relatively small, with the added bonus of a little coping blade, as well as the lock on the main blade. I haven't done any whittling with it yet, but it looks even more promising to me in person than it did when I saw online photos. My only complaint so far is that I struggle a little bit releasing the lock; I often have that problem with a lockback release notch that's in the middle of the frame, rather than at the "back end" - maybe it's a question of leverage.
