Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

I just pulled the trigger on a 3 blade dogleg jack for under 14 bucks. I really liked the unique shape of the frame and wanted something kinda different.

Amazon says I should have it by the 21st:)

Here's my latest Rough Rider. It's a lockback mini-canoe; 3 inches closed. I love my regular RR canoe, and hope the same will be true of this scaled-down version. My real reason for getting it is that I like to mess around with whittling, and smaller blades work better for me. So this has two sizes of spearpoint (pen) blades, both relatively small, with the added bonus of a little coping blade, as well as the lock on the main blade. I haven't done any whittling with it yet, but it looks even more promising to me in person than it did when I saw online photos. My only complaint so far is that I struggle a little bit releasing the lock; I often have that problem with a lockback release notch that's in the middle of the frame, rather than at the "back end" - maybe it's a question of leverage.

That'sa great little knife GT, I haven't seen that one before. Do you have a pic of the back spring and the pattern number?

Best regards

Thanks, Robin! The pattern # is RR1077. That's the amber jigged bone version; it was available in other handle variations at one time, but I don't know how many of them are still "out there". I don't have a photo of the back spring, but each blade has its own spring - 3 springs sandwiched between the liners. I think I first became aware of this model here: http://blindkat.hegewisch.net/RRR/rr-locking-canittlers.html. Back spring photos are available there. Hope this helps!

Thanks GT, I grabbed one right after seeing yours, looks like a handy little knife.

This whittler I have is awesome, but the more I open the blades, the harder they are to open. I'm guessing some oil will fix it? In past experiences the blade usually gets easier to open with time.

RR tends to leave a lot of compound in the joint, a good flooding with oil and working it will usually get the junk out.

A lock back canoe whittler! Awesome, just ordered one. You guys are going to have me sleeping on the couch for a month when the other half finds out I've bought 12 knives since Xmas. Stop showing such great and cool knives.

I think you and me are in the same boat. I've always loved knives, but after finding this forum, I've either been ordering or buying a knife (price range between $12-$65) a week for the past two months lol. Have I gone mad?? nah

Yes, totally mad! We all are (as are all collectors). Enjoy it; there is no cure for blade madness. I've been a knife/sword collector for over 60 years and everyone I know thinks I'm totally insane. They are probably correct, but I still enjoy my blades. Collectors and non-collectors are two entirely different species; destined to never understand each other (fortunately I'm wed to a collector, not knives, but it doesn't matter - it's the mind set).

Does RR have a knife that would be like the GEC 76 western outlaw? I found a RR1200 but don't like the scales, then they have an RR1197 I think it is which is just about right but too large. I want it to be 3.25-3.5" Thanks

Sorry, Rich, but you know how it is; when you find a cool knife you want to show it off to people
who'll appreciate it. :p Glad you liked the looks of that "cannitler".

"Cannitler"??? That doesn't sound like a knife word, more like something one does to waste time:

"What are you doing today? Me? Oh, I've just been cannitling around the house."

BTW, I also ordered the gunstock stockman in bark bone. It looks pretty. I guess it's actually a "gunstockman"? :-)

Of course I'll never carry any of them. I settled on my EDC's a long time ago. I think I've actually only carried about a half dozen knives (folders, not counting backpacking, hiking, etc. fixed blades), in my life time. Now if I can only find that Colt stag barlow!

Got my new Marbles Cattle Knife this week. What a beast! Very nice knife. Razor sharp out of the box and just a delight to handle.

Hi Rich, there seems to be plenty of the Stag Barlows on the big auction site, both the aniversary model and the unetched model.

Thanks for the link GT. I Love the look of this little whittler, I like the feel of a chunky small knife and with the sunk joints this should feel great in the hand. I captured this pic from the site you posted.

Robin -

No account with that big auction site (don't want one). Surely some online dealer has them; just a matter of finding it.
Thanks anyway.
Rich

Did that gone ago. Only one place has it in stock (all others are out of stock or can be put on waiting list) at twice the price of other dealers. Thanks anyway.

You're welcome, Robin. So far, I like the knife more than I thought I would based on photos I saw. (I have to learn to "capture" photos like you did.)
