Running Shorts knife

Here's my running rig; a Spyderco Dragonfly2 in a neck sheath.

I do sometimes carry my endure though if I know I'm going running in an area where there might be dogs.

The problem with running shorts is that they are light weight and a knife with only minimal weight for regular shorts will have your running shorts sagging. If you must have a close to 3" blade a Syderco Salt 1 at 2 oz. is the best bet. The second choice, which is a bit slimmer top to bottom, is the Benchmade Lonewolf Mini Landslide at 2.22 oz. (also salt water rated). It is only $37 and was my choice, finding it easier to carry. Often, I will carry a simple FRN Dragonfly at 1.2 oz.
As a side note, the Mini Landslide has a stronger tip than the Salt 1. It comes in Orange, Green, and Pink.

I have two knives that see regular work out use. Spyderco Pacific Salt full sized if water is involved and a SOG Aegis mini. Both are great and lite weight, the SOG in particular. For workout knives a strong detent or a lock is a must. I wouldn't use a Benchmade for this reason.

Another option when I want to carry something a little more substantial (Endura, etc.) is to wear my Flip Belt (http://flipbelt.com/). I carry my phone in one side to listen to music (Bluetooth headphones) and run Endomundo and clip my Endura in the other side. Works like a champ and you never know its there. They never see the FLip Belt either because it's under my shirt.

A Salt 1 is perfect for this, which is what I carried for a long while.

Bumping for additional input. Does anybody have recommendations to add? An erratic dog on my run the other day put me on the search.

Al Mar Falcon Ultralight. Weighs like an ounce, literally. Carries like it's made out of smoke.

Choice of full flat grind or their "Talon" blade, either is a great cutter.

Fit and finish is phenomenal. If you are a steel snob, you might be put off. But as light carry goes, it's beez neez.

I use my sog flashback 3.5 for biking and jogging. The clip is deep and works with athletic style waistbands. Extremely lightweight as well. I've used the endura and flash II in the same way, but the clip on the flashback is what makes it great imo for jogging... Plus the stainless exoskeleton is non chaffing... The thing rides invisible, you'll forget that it's there... Sign of a good carry option... Sog, you ain't gonna get fit and finish but dang, you get a great functional purpose built tool...

The PM2 is pretty freakin light in my opinion. I've clipped it in my boxers/PJ/basketball shorts waistband many times. I think it would work as well as any others.

I agree with this completely, i usually always have the PM2 on me, most of the time forgetting its even there until i need it. ive worn it while running, and while it does bang against your leg a little bit, its not too uncomfortable.

The Al Mar and SOG look interesting. Both knives I've never checked out. Dig the low weight for running shorts.

Did anyone mention the Benchmade 530 Pardue?
Axis lock, 3.25" blade, and under 2 oz.
So thin and light, I take the pocket clip off and put in my wallet for places that don't allow tools.

How about the Boker Urban Trapper? 3.5 inches of VG-10, titanium frame and under 2oz.

cncpro11, I'd forgotten about the BM 530 Pardue. That's an excellent suggestion.

I bought one for a co-worker when he retired, and I remember being shocked at how light it was.

That's a bunch of knife for under 2 ounces... 154CM, Axis Lock... dang you, now I need one.

I'd look at the Spyderco Salt series - they are very light, with linerless FRN scales, and are very corrosion resistant, which could be helpful if you think you'll be sweating. I also like h1 generally, as it is easy to sharpen and holds a good enough edge. Only problem is that there is an endura-sized knife, and the dragonfly sized knife... neither are exactly the 3 inches you are looking for.

I was going to suggest H1 dragonfly

That 530 looks like a good one. I just did 3 miles with a full size Griptilian in waist band at 3 o'clock and forgot it was there. Surprisingly comfortable and retention was tight. Even less weight would be sweet.

NielB, I gotta agree with your suggestion as well. Titanium, bearings, Brad Zinker framelock flipper design... another lightweight contender.

Benchmade has a Youtube video showing some basic cutting tasks and then a destructive lock test at the end. I can't remember how much force it took to break the lock but it was substantial for such a small, thin, and light knife.

While not a Spyderco The BM 530 with a coated blade is thin, light, has a nice grip to it and depending on needs and taste has either a plain of partially serrated blade.
I can clip it inside the waistband of my running shorts and never notice it while running. The black coated blade will inhibit corrosion.

This.

I often carry my 530 as it offers more cutting edge than a Strider SNG while only weighing 1.8 ounces. I got a deep carry clip from Benchmade so now it is the perfect medium sized folder for carry IMHO.
