RyanW SPK Passaround WIP

That right there NAILS IT!!!
After measuring the edge and safe choil, an inch of awesome steel goes unused turning it into a 2 5/8 blade.
Fully sharp would make the best use of all 3 5/8 IMO. Hoping to get after some meat this weekend.

Thanks for the reviews so far Kent! And good luck with the upcoming hunt. I have a feeling that you are already well on your way to designing your own SPK knife with personalized options. I intend to do the same as you might have noticed! In fact, I just got the elephant hide for the sheath this week!

As for the method of sharpening in order to retian the micro serrations, 90 degrees to the blade, not parallel as with a smooth edge. But it sounds as if you maintained the edge as designed by only touching it up with a few light strokes. I honestly did not expect everyone to be receptive of this type edge. But really, it takes the same amount of time and skill to produce this micro serrated edge as it does to produce a fine edge. It isn't really a production shortcut (like paintaing a blade to hide surface flaws), just different than what most people are used to.

Slice a few veggies with it while you are at it. It should slice a tomato thinner that one would suspect given the overall blade profile.

ETA: Lookie what I got Ryan!

Thanks again Everyone for the kind words... Kent I look forward to your next post!

I have had a few orders come in for this design. First one off the bench had some different requests.
1. Sharpen all the way to the ricasso (No "Safe Choil")
2. Add a choil to make a little easier to sharpen
3. No toothy Edge

I left the thickness where the safe choil would be that is why the secondary bevel climbs up the flat higher in the re-curve. I think if I am going to sharpen all the way up to the ricasso I would consider eliminating the re-curve.

Very nice Ryan. Someone is going to be very happy :D

Just curious, is there a reason that you didn't do the jimping towards the tip, the same way it is done on the ramp ?

Very cool Michael. I'm looking forward to seeing your new version

Ever since I got to spend time with Ryans knife, I have been working on a design for him to make. I think I am getting closer.

Wow, Codger you have been busy! Looks like all the elements are in place I have to get a few practice pieces in before I move forward on your project!

Luckily this design is easy to modify to everyones likes. Mike the customer asked for different jimping because he felt that the odds of the front being slippery were pretty high. I am not sure this style of jimping has more grip than the ones like the pass around. And Let me know when you are ready, I would love to see what you have in mind for a design.

Ya, I've been silent, but fear not. Deer front shoulders have been obtained and will be dismantled after work tomorrow or Saturday. Full report to follow.
I figure the next in line might be chomppin at the bit.:D

Congrats on the deer. I'm dying to see how well this dismantles it.

I am with you Mack! Kent, I really look forward to what you think!

I actually have a close friend that just got a deer and I will be up there tomorrow with one of these to get some testing in as well. i will take photos and give a report too!

I know JParanee is breathing down our necks and may have a kill any day (If he gets a break from his Zombie killing):D

May is the key word there :)

Ya never know hunting is hunting :)

As long as the Walking Deads on I won't stop thinking about Zombies :)

We have an opening youth hunt here today. Youths hunting deer, not hunters hunting youths. So maybe I'll get to use an original Sharpfinger and take pictures to illustrate how I get 'er done. I think I have one around here somewhere.

Success. A friend's nephew is bringing a buck by to be dressed and butchered. Pics may follow in an approprite forum to which I will link here. Temps are in the mid 40's.

Very nice, Let us know how long it takes you to decide which Sharpfinger you will use!

I only have thirty or so to choose from. I picked one from circa 1978 in used but near new condition.
Here are a few from my stash. Which one would you choose?

While they did make some limited editions in both burnt stag and jigged bone, those pictured are the Uncle Henry 152UH with Staglon, stag molded and dyed Delrin handles.

I just ordered a RyanW Pigsticker. Looks like there will be a SPK order in the near future.

I dropped some materials in the mail for mine today, but the actual order is on hold for a while. I want to play with the passaround knife first before finalizing the design.

Good news and bad news. I got the buck dressed and quartered, but my son who was to be the photographer got called out of town. I posted a few pictures I took, but couldn't cut and take pictures at the same time. I will expand the thread with more photos as deer come my way. For now there are only three pictures. I will be glad to answer any questions in that thread though. And when I get the pass around SPK, I'll do a show and tell with it. We have a lot of season ahead of us and the limit is only three a day.

Since you asked, I would go with this one.

I'm just betting that it has been around the block a few times.

Well dangitall, photobucket has a hole in it and is givin me fits!!

Gonna have to go with the thumb nails. Anyway, to sum up my experience with this knife I have to say I'm honored to be apart of this pass around. The pinky dent didn't have any effect on the useability for me, but adds to the look. In taking apart the front shoulders of a deer, the front jimping is a non issue as well; not that they were any trouble, just that I am indifferent to them. The balance is awsome with this knife and the heft of such a small blade is very nice. I still maintain though that a razor edge, without safety, would be scary wicked. I say that with the utmost of respect, as this knife has so many ways to be customized without really changing the labor for the blade master i.e., "a little here, a little there".
I also forgot to say before, that from the first time I saw this knife everything says to me "out west". It is obviously gorgeous and is very useful!!

This was a bit slushy but came apart just the same.
