RyanW SPK Passaround WIP

Great review Mike. I'm not surprised at all about your thoughts on the knife. I am kinda surprised that you couldn't find a deer to cut up.:D
It will be an absolute joy to get this in my hands to try out.

Thanks Mike for the Great post! I really appreciate you taking the time to use the knife, take photos and write up a great review. The photos are perfect and as you stated, this is for a group of Bow Hunters so the on topic photos are very much appreciated. My son and i have just gotten into Recurve shooting and hope to move onto hunting when we get more proficient.

I am also not very familiar with using a "Toothy" edged blade, and this one is VERY toothy! Luckily this is an option that can be up to the individual. I am looking forward to the other users giving their thoughts in this area as well.

I love High Carbon Steel and 1095 is one of the fastest to patina IMO. I knew the knife would not be as "Pretty" after the first use. If you had gotten a Deer or Elk (sorry about that) to use this guy on the Patina would be much worse. A good patina doesn't bother me at all, it just makes a mess of that Hamon. haha

Mack you are up next! Since you and Mike are acquaintances, you guys can work out the exchange how ever is easiest!

I knew I would forget something... The jimping. How did I forget that ?

The jimping on the ramp is perfect imho. Nicely executed, and not abrasive  Besides, I think it adds a nice touch, and looks right at home.
I really like the fact you added the jimping towards the tip. Done the same way as the ramp jimping, I think people that work on animals, even if they had never thought about it, would really appreciate it.
I like the hamon. It looks great. Its the first knife I have had in hand that has one. After cutting the chicken, my wife commented, " You ruined the pretty " :D

The sheath is nicely done too. It has great retention. I could wear this on my hunting belt, and never worry about the knife falling out.

Thanks Mack. I did have two shots I could have taken on bucks. Both were broadside, uphill at about 50 yards. I'm confident at that range, but there was some brush and branches in the way, and I wasn't 100% certain I could pull it off without wounding them. As much as I wanted, I couldn't force myself to do like some do, and let her fly and hope for the best. I have to much respect for the animals...

I have no doubt you are going to have a big smile on your face, when you get this one in hand :D

Your very welcome Ryan. It was my pleasure. Thank you for the chance to enjoy this one... We are on the same page with High Carbon steel.
It's nice to see a maker, making knives at the level you do, and still using 1095

Thats great you and your son are both shooting. I love recurves, but haven't gotten to the point where I am comfortable using one for hunting.

My son Travis started shooting bows when he was about 9, and has been hunting with his for 2 seasons now. If you have never archery hunted, it is very rewarding. Even on years like this one, where I didn't get anything.
How many people get to experience being 20 feet from elk and deer in woods ? It's magical watching them interact, when they don't know you are there.
You just have to really program yourself to not take shots that you would normally take with a rifle. Its all worth it though.

I'll have this beauty in my hands this morning. I really can't wait to try it out.

I got it and I must say, I'm more impressed than I had expected. This fits my hand as if it had been made for it. I can't find a flaw in the fit and finish yet but I will be going over it much more closely. I really doubt that I'll find anything though.
After falling in love with Sharpfingers, I didn't think they could be improved on. I was wrong. Very wrong. This is a work of art that will be a dream to work with.

More to come when I get some more cutting time.

Very Cool Mack! Glad to see showed up safely and you like it. I look forward to seeing it get some use from you.

Good to see it Mack. I miss her :D

I know what you mean. It's going to be tough to pass this along. So far I haven't done much but in my work I often need to cut plastic wire ties and seals for trailer doors. This is a dream knife for those tasks. The fine tip gets into she smallest places and the "micro-serrated" edge cuts the tough plastic with ease.
More testing to follow...

By the way, the sheath is a work of art as well. I haven't seen it mentioned much but it is really nicely made.

Very cool knife - I can see this being perfect for cutting filet rolls.

Very nice work on the knife, and I enjoyed watching the knife being made.

best

Cool. The wire ties and seals are a good test.
The sheath is very nice. Outstanding retention, but still easily removed

Very, cool!

Hope you guys have fun with that one:thumbup: Don't beat it up too bad.....I want it to still be in good condition when I get it once the passaround is over! :D

It'll be in great condition when it leaves me. You'll be getting a beautiful knife. It's going to be really hard to send this on.

Thanks mqqn, Mike, Jonny and Mack. I am working on my leather work, and Jonny dont be such a tease! :D

If the knife meets my expectations (and early indications are that it will), I may just be the one who hangs on to it. Failing that, I might be comissioning my own from Ryan. Perhaps with 10,000 year old mammoth ivory I have been hoarding for years.

Oh, that's really good-looking stuff, Codger. It's too over-the-top for you, though. You should give it to me.;)

Codger that is some cool stuff. I'm trying to imagine it on this knife and it just might be a good fit.

One of the things that I'm finding that I really love is the tip of this knife. I have a habit of holding knives like a pencil for fine, careful cuts. The shape of this knife, the tip jimping and the "safe choil" make this a perfect knife for this. The tip is ground beautifully too.

Those are beautiful Codger! I would be honored to put them on a blade for you...

Thanks again Mack, I am really glad you are having a good time using the knife. I have changed the passaround order a little bit. Mack you are going to be sending it to Kent "mewolf1" in stead of Joe, then Kent will send it to Joe. I will send you Kents Info in a PM!

Thanks guys

I really have not started hunting yet. I'm still fishing :) heading up state for Browns and Steelhead this weekend. Would not want to drop it in the river :)

It needs to get a little colder around here for me to get in the deer woods so I will not be getting out to do any bowhunting for awhile

Thanks again :)

It has a thong hole for retention, but yeah. That is why I asked to be last. The deer hunting won't be in full swing here for at least a month.

There are no time constraints for you guys when you get this guy in your grubby hands! I want it to see real world use, and get some quality feedback. So far I have only heard good things (Not complaining), with the small exception of some toothy edge questions (Which I completely understand myself). I haven't had experience using that edge on it's intended design... Processing game.

So by all means lets get it to you when you need it. It sounds like Kent may have the opportunity to test it a little bit on some "Deer Parts".

I am enjoying this immensely and really appreciate all the kind words and the time invested in this.
... Ryan
