DD, this account has been discussed and answered in this thread, but to take it a step further for you.

Mr Welk, along with others will have input with this Mod. handle. Some of the posts will be his and some will be others, all written by me. As I mentioned, this Mod. duty will be done by committee. There is not time enough for one person to handle this. As it is Jimmer spends too much time here.

As you can imagine, being a manufacturer here comes with a lot of work and headaches. We need all the help we can get to assist in keeping the peace.

Thank you for your understanding.

Kai Corp

I think at this point this thread is just a place for us all to get flustered.
and I don't mean to point fingers, every one in this thread to an extent has played a part.
but this is just a argument over something that can't be changed.
And therefore I think it would be best to either stop the conversation all together or lock the thread until tomorrow morning so everyone has some time to cool down.

Lastly, I love the fact that Thomas is taking part in the forum again (if your reading this, thanks for the great work, and thank you to every one else at KAI:))

I hope every one has a good night!

I'm out!

VR, please don't come in here and speak your speak like you have. We like things a bit more civil around here.

Capiche?

As to this account, it's answers, and the information that come from it, are presented by committee. From our engineers, Tim Galyean, our other designers, to our long time industry professionals, we take input from all of our resources. The answers will come from of all us through one voice.

My post was meant to be rhetorical. Sorry for the confusion.

There are other people like me reading this thread who don't follow what's going on with Kai. That answer (from the company) took a long time and what came before it wasn't pretty.

I said it was talked about before and where it was talked about ( by a mod at that). I also said sticktodrum repeated it in the first page as did others. Its just a short search away

Yea, I got quoted by a mod.......I feel special :p :D

You quoted me, and I am honored. ;)

On another unrelated note, please guys and gals let's try and be constructive and civil to everyone that chooses to involve themselves in this discussion. This is a really nice knife after all.

So, people are getting mad that ZT is running S110V at 59 HRC? That's ridiculous. I mean, if you're such a good knifemaker and everything, why don't you go heat treat S110V at higher hardnesses? Good luck!

Well, you do make good sig material :D

I've been using mine as an EDC (until my 0550 arrived), cutting board, EVA, denim, boxes, strimmer line, small branches and coaxial.
I managed to ding the blade just a bit on something or other...

but hey, it's a tool, not a fine porcelain tea cup. Give me another couple of weeks and i bet I can have it looking like a bread knife

Besides, I have 160g alum oxide paper and some Flitz impregnated leather to get it looking new again...

I am not sure people think KAI is incapable of heat treating S110V at a higher hardness. We all know they can do it, but the original question was whether or not it was even worth it to have S110V at that number (59). It was then determined that this number was not arbitrary, but was in fact limited by the brazing aspect of the composite blade.

Obviously, S110V is still a great steel, no one is complaining 154CM is better, just that S110V can be run a good bit harder to really bring out it's capabilities. The reason people are getting passionate about this is because the ZT brand exemplifies performance and represents a new kind of boldness and material usage that redefines mass produced knives. We were simply wondering why they couldn't make this knife a bit wilder given the price. This isn't a cheap knife and many feel that when a knife commands this kind of money, it shouldn't have any compromises. No one (always the exception) was really getting too twisted up about this, but some do feel they deserve answers when they spend this kind of money.

Thank you jimmer!
Im down with 59hrc S110V, but im sticking with my elmax because i can't afford two.
Goodnight

Because in order to braze the two pieces together the base metals (two halves) must be be heated (think about how solder doesn't bond well if the work piece isn't hot). That process would ruin the HT on the blade.

I had thought as much but since the austenitizing temperature of s110v is above the melting temperature of copper and tempering times are usually done for more than a minute I thought it could be possible to weld the two together without significantly affecting the temper at the edge. Since that's not the case it seems Jimmer's succinct answer is quite sufficient.

Because there was some posting here that I felt were questioning our ethics, and being rude. Still feel that way.

I'm not always going to answer every question. I'll assume that is ok? You don't have to answer that. :)

Jimmer's answer was succinct and directly answered the OP's question without veering into questioning the motives of posters. I hope you don't find this rude, but a simple, direct answer is usually the best solution. You don't have to answer anything, but answering people's questions tends to prevent people from veering into what you seem to deem as questioning the motives of the company. The technology doesn't allow for a hardness above 59 HRC for this specific alloy in this specific configuration. Question answered, issue solved.

If you go back to the first page, sticktodrum did give that specific answer. If you followed anything over In the kai subforum( which I have seen you over there) this has been discussed by jimmer and others to great lengths.

Thanks jimmer and kai corp for taking the time to answer the questions. Good luck at blade, not that you need it though!

Let's not make this thread about me. I read various areas of the site. I don't read everything. I was reading this thread and confused as to why a simple, direct answer wasn't provided. Jimmer provided that answer. The OP's question seems to be answered and now we all have a direct answer as to why the blades were run at 59 HRC.
