Sad BK5:

Good knives bring good folk together; Uncle E. would be pleased.

I'm sure Ethan would have offered his number and talked with him. Then invite him for a beer.

It's not the be all end all, but I like it. I traded off a an old Brute for a 5 replacement with the Warrior, and never looked back. The Brute was heavy and was just another knife to me. My first 5 was lent out in good faith, along with a Ka-Bar Potbelly to a member. He never returned them and disappeared. So there you go, no good deed goes unpunished, lol. My 5 now wears micarta and sits in a spec ops combat master sheath. It is big and weighs nothing. I can process food with it, make feather sticks, and fillet fish. Folks seem to either like them, or not, to each their own I say. Just have fun out there.

I wouldn't mind seeing a 1/4" bk5. Use the bk5 wisely though and sure you could get away with moderate abuse, and IT IS A SLICING MACHINE. As dubs said, like BK9 better. Kabar making more .22-.25" thick blades think would be great on 7"+ long blades. .22" BK 7 or 9 think would be neat. Kabar almost 100% of the time puts a nice grind on their knives so sure would not fail with making THICK blades slicable. I think they very much succeeded with the 20 in that regard.

Davey, slow your roll, don't be so defensive, why not just buy a 9, 20 ect if want durability?

I've always loved the MCK, and JF's touch didn't hurt AT ALL!!!!! I JUST THOUGHT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE ROBUST.

We recently had our first REAL winter storm in several years in Duluth a couple of weeks ago (sad; I remember a blizzard or two a year throughout the 1980s...and 1991, Halloween). I was "camping" with a couple of friends at a cabin during this. Outhouse in the winter; does that make it seem more rough???

Anywho, I won't go into it, but the BK5 did do all I wanted it to...

...except when I had to fight off that pack of

BOB DYLAN FANS!!!!!!

hope you didn't get bit - that's one of the ways they spread the infection.

I have a few different BK's and I have gifted even more. I bought a BK 5 for a good buddy of mine and when it arrived, I, of course, had to play with it a bit. I was actually very impressed with it and would not hesitate to strap it on and venture out into the woods for a few days or weeks.

Someone mentioned here something to the effect that it punches above its weight class and I would have to agree. Though substantially thinner than a BK 2, it is still tough as hell and in my opinion, more versatile.

My very first Becker was a BK 9, my first love, and I acquired it because I wanted to explore the "one-tool" concept in the wilderness. Though it performed this role admirably, the more time I spend outdoors with it, the more my needs/desires evolve. So I switched it up and acquired a BK 2 and an axe. I loved this combo but I quickly found that the thickness of the BK 2 really impeded my efforts in performing finer tasks such as food prep and fine wood craft. When I attempted to skin an elk with it, is when it really demonstrated its shortcomings. Granted, this knife is not a skinner but I still wanted to try. That being said, due to its toughness, the BK 2 would certainly be my go to knife if I had to survive in the middle of nowhere with nothing but a knife....

My tool kit is currently comprised of an axe, saw, a BK 9, and a BK 16, my wife carries the BK 2 when she ventures out with me. I have found that I can be enormously successful with these tools and they are all a pleasure to use in their own right. The BK 5 would certainly be no exception.

(In fact, if my buddy doesn't start using that piece of awesomeness, I just might have to repossess it and take it in place of my 9 next time I go out....)

I DID! Sliced right next to my thumbnail! Damned curses.

Not even going to weigh in on the trolling. Bladite's covered it.

Regarding the 5 though, let's remember that the knife was designed and tweaked for Ka-Bar by none other than Jerry Fisk.
The man has forgotten more about knives than most of us know.

I remember my first 5 (I also remember chopping a xmas tree apart with it, lol ) reminding me of some of the Fur Trade knives that I've found while metal detecting. Mr. Fisk replied that the 5 was influenced from those types of designs. He asked for and I sent various pictures. The 5 always struck me as a larger certain type of trade knife, and I suppose that the semblance had some merit.

I was SUPER WRONG. I love this knife! Holds a good edge, tough, versatile, and good lookin'! HANDLES NEED SOME KIND OF TEXTURING!!! (My only request.)

Good God! I was so wrong about this knife. :o

Yes, you were ;). You are the greater man for admitting it.
Texturing on the handles.....can be achieved, tho many don't find it all that useful. Quick and dirty would be to use some silicone repair "tape" found in the plumbing section at the HD (or wherever). Cheap, grippy without being aggressive, minimal bulk and easily removed. Stretch & Seal from Nashua is the stuff I have.

I really like the Kabar micarta on the 5 in particular. Makes it feel even more nimble in the hand and gives great grip.

Happy to see you've seen the light! They really are great knives!! I'm super sad they're off the lineup.

Yes!!

You can do lots of things to make the handle more grippy. Some people use a bicycle inner tube and slide it over the handle. That works....but in my limited experience, it tended to roll and bunch up if I was using the knife hard. You can also use tennis racket wrap. I've seen people use soldering irons to poke holes all over the handles to give better grip, as well. You might get a bit more grip just by hitting it with a bit of sandpaper and roughing it up a bit. I'm sure there are tons of other ways to do it as well. If you do decide to work on that, feel free to let us know what you used and how it's working for you. :)

You can just pour coke on your hand or use tree sap.

Anybody know were I can buy a 15 from a store?

Hello Mr. Fisk,

It's nice to hear from you. I just wanted to say I really enjoy your 15 & 5 designs. They are "beauty in motion".
