Safe queen logic?

Truth is, I got tired a long time ago trying to explain how my hobby in collecting certain things, (and my decorating with them), makes me happy. So, I pretty much just do what I do, knowing I have no obligation in explaining or justifying my hobby to anyone but myself. I guess most folks that have/or do dabble in collecting, (of any sort), will likely have a better chance of grasping the why(s). Those that don't, never did, or never will... well, they may be less likely to "get it".

In the end, it's all good :)

Btw, my hobby surrounds me in my domain, since I incorporate them into my interior decor. Everyone that enters my living space, has good things to say, even when the items they see are "not their thing". One "thing" is certain, these items, and their inclusion into my decor, always brings up good conversation and puts smiles on the faces of my guests.
My latest aquisition to my collection is my antique Kukri knife, (shown here at the top of this display case). When I see it, I can't help but to smile too! :)

I have users, I have "safe queens" and I have knives on display. If knives are just tools for you then great.

I think I'm like a lot of people, I have way more knives than I can use at one time, and although I have some (about half or there abouts) that go in my pocket every day or every few days, I have some others that are in the safe waiting to come out when my current ones get out of the way. Sometimes I sell users or my sleepers.
So why did I buy them to set them in dark? Well.....so you didn't buy the last one of course, I've seen that happen many times, especially with a special model or custom that spoke to me and what I like.

I don't really feel the need to justify it to anyone.

I never understood the safe queen concept, i use all my knives in my collection.... but... last year I found in a antique market a classic handmade spanish navaja made by Julian Galvan. That is my safe queen now! The value of the navaja is almost $2,000 and I pay only $15..

I like the way you refer to your knives-in-waiting as “sleepers.” I may use that.

So you've never , EVER , had some brand spanking new shiny thing you loved that you wanted to stay that way and felt some ( or a lot of ) pain when it first got scratched and dirty and then finally worn out ?

No as a matter of fact I don't consider it mine until it has some scratches and dings but I'm also not a collector of anything.

I get where you're coming from OP I don't collect and I don't really understand those that do to me having all that extra junk means all that much more junk that has to be boxed up the next time I move, has to be kept clean, and takes up space that could be re-purposed into something usable, and ties up money that could be better used. Having said that peoples differences are what keeps life interesting and makes life an adventure.

If you have trouble grasping knife collecting, you need to cruise through some “fine shotgun” maker websites. Try Purdey, Holland and Holland, Westley Richards and Caesar Guerini for a start. After you regain consciousness, do an internet search of “fine shotguns for sale” for further reading. The unnecessarily rich think little or nothing of spending >$200K on a bespoke SxS shotgun. Compared to the shotgun collections those people keep in their climate-controlled vaults, knife collecting is more akin to saving pocket change.

I have a few I'm just a little more careful with, other than that, I carry them all at some point.

This topic seems to come up fairly frequently, and what I don't get is this: why does anyone care what someone else does with their stuff? They bought it, it's theirs, they are free to do what they like with it. Stick your knife in your pocket, or in your safe, or in your wall. I could care less. I guess the exceptions would be "use it in commission of a crime" or "destroy something of historical value (like those Tutankhamen daggers @Dan of Bazz Clazz posted)".

I don't gender discriminate. I have equal numbers of safe "queens" and "kings".

Accusing someone of "queening" has the same derogatory tone as calling someone a "mall ninja". Everyone has their own reasons for accumulating knives and none are any "less good" than an other. To each their own. Enjoy those knives whether in the hand or in a "safe" space!:D

Simply, collecting and logic usually don’t go hand in hand:D

Knives and logic dont go hand in hand. If they did we wouldn't be here going on about steel types and grinds and locks. If they did there wouldn't be oversized knives, or coated knives, or "survival" knives, or "tactical" knives, or etc etc etc. If they did there wouldn't be folks flipping LEs and sprint runs. If they did we would all have a SAK or a gas station knife or something from Walmart in our pocket and be done with it, like normal people do.

Do what you want with your knives. And no one here can tell you what you want to do with your knives.

But "safe queens" are silly, What's the point if you can't see your beauties? :D I only have "display queens."

I have somewhere around 450 knives. :D I bought each one because something was special about it "to me". I can only use so many (around 15 or so) and the rest just bring me pleasure as I rotate the ones I display; sometimes knives from different countries, sometimes choppers, then flippers, etc. (you get the idea). ;) Knives are !

I agree there is no room for discrimination ;p. I have safe queens and kings and its just fine for me. Most all of my damascus blades are safe queens and many of my old Randalls,Loveless, Moran, EK's etc...some have been used in the past but there just either too valuable or irreplaceable(more likely) for me to risk using in a situation that might damage them. So they come out of there hidy hole, get a rub down or massage with some protection and back in they go after I am done admiring them or showing them off to fellow knife knuts. Now there are some that I will sell because they are meant to be used. I am in that situation now with 2 or 3 knives that should be used or appreciated more by someone else and I just have no lust for them anymore.

I probably have 2-300 SQs.. A few yrs ago I vowed NO MORE!! :p BUT... A few have been shipping in.. John

"Queening" --> 'Trophying'?

"So shiny. So chrome." Most prefer their women the same.

My logic is “they are tools meant to be carried and used to be truly appreciated for their intended function

Not everyone has the same reasons or logic. If you buy a knife to appreciate its aesthetic, enjoy pride of ownership and that sort of esoteric value then it may very well be the only ‘function’ one requires out of it.
