Sal: Spydie tie clasps..will they return?

I've led a sheltered life until the last several years, when I became a knife nut. Does anybody have a picture of these knife pins/clasps? Would they be an appropriate gift for the wife - to go with what she already carries in her pocket or waistband? Is it possible for the new one to work as a tie clasp and a pin? Maybe two versions are called for. I have some really nice ties that I don't want to poke holes in. When dressed casually, I would poke it into my Tilley Hat, Eh.

I know there have been many handles but, the classic spyderco is stainless. It would be the cheapest to make (sell the most of) and a simple style/color that would be the most wearable for the most people. Shape should be a "classic" one: mariner, police, delica, etc. (although I'd love a little civillian).

I've rumaged around a found a picture of the Spyderco Tie Clipit (#SP3002TC) from a 3-94 Cutlery Shoppe flyer. These were originally retailed at $60 but were being closed out as low as $12.50 in quantity. I don't have a web site to link the pix, so I'll have to coordinate with Spark to have it posted here.

Specs:

Polished stainless handle with centered Spyderco cloissone logo. Alligator clip affixed to reverse side, 1.5" Blade 50/50, G-2 steel, length open 3 5/8", length closed 2 1/8", blade thickness 1/16", weight 0.8 oz

Just email me a copy of the picture, and I'll post it ASAP. I've been having a lot of connection problems this weekend so it may have to wait until tomorrow.

OK Sal, I'm back. Count me in. Still carry an original "Worker" plain blade off and on. Would like that classic look in a tie clasp.
Duh! Just remembered, I don't own any ties. I'll clip it to my trooper hat!

Here is the link to the picture, the pic itself is 97k, so I don't want it posted in this thread.

I want one too!! ^_^

BTW if anyone had problems viewing that file (like I did) you can shift-click it to download it to your harddrive, and then rename the extension to a JPG file. Looks neat!

Edit:
I played around with the image in photoshop and shrunk the file size down too -- I'm trying to link it here now.

if someone is doing a tally, you can count me in for at least one depending on price.

Well, it certainly sounds like there is plenty of interest in them, now we just have to narrow down the choices of material for them.

Ideally, we all want the knife to look nice, and still be affordable to everyone who visits the forums. It needs to be relatively long lasting, and able to take a scratch/ding without ruining it. So, ideally we'd need a list of materials that are readily available that would fit this bill.

Me, personally, I'm fond of the standard metal handles on some Spyderco knives. However, that doesn't mean that I wouldn't wear one in desert ironwood!

Sal, what are your recommendations for handle material based on these criterion?

Bald1 started off this thread with "Since I see where you're looking at a necklace again"... I took a look around for a posting by Sal on this, but cannot locate it -- could someone suggest what thread to look at?

I only wear a tie about once a decade, but I could wear a necklace every day -- I remember an old Cutlery Shoppe ad for a tiny Spyderco Mariner on a necklace, and would love to have one now. As I recall, it had a fully serrated Mariner blade, shrunk to something a bit over 1" in length, and abalone scales (though maybe I'm confusing the necklace with the tie-clips, which I do remember being available with a number of different scale materials).

You know how it goes -- at the time, I had no use for it and thought it silly, now I'd love to have one...

Besides, I bet the pocket-clip-removing crowd would hate a tie-clip: it'd be the largest clip-to-knife ratio ever

By the way, for jewelery sized stuff like the necklace (and maybe the tie clip too), I think the sheepsfooted Mariner blade pattern might be a wiser choice -- still usefully sharp, with much less chance of stabbing yourself if the Spydie-hole (which at that scale, isn't really a thumb hole) gets snagged on something.

Yes, I too am sorry I did not purchase a few of them when the Cutlery Shoppe had them on closeout. I would love to see at least a short or limited run and will buy a few. The picture of the spyder logo on metal from Dan' s picture is perfect. Maybe a gold inlay instead of the black?... Or leave it plain for your own engraving pleasure. But it should be reasonably priced(subjective, I guess).

Dan - nice pic, thanx.

Re: Tie-Clipit - Spyderco made them in stainless steel (with and without logo), Abalone, pearl, chinese quince, cocobolo, redbone, Corrienne and stag. The one in the picture is stainless steel. I would recommenmd against the cocobolo and quince. The exotic woods in the very thin cross section had some humidity problems. The stainless without logo lends itself to engraving possibilities. The abalone is probably the most "striking", especially to the "non knife person". Bone can be dyed any color, we used red. Stag is nice, but fairly expensive and I think the Corrienne is too brittle. your move.

Re: Necklace - Spyderco is expected to begin delivery on a "Mini Police Model" necklace early March '99. The piece will be shown at the SHOT Show. Initial production is limited so they might be difficult to get. Sorry guys, difficult to make means fewer out the door due to limited production capacities and market test of ELU reaction.

Overall length (open) - 3.1" 78.8mm) (including extended lanyard hole)
Blade length (hilt to tip) 1.25" (31.8mm) full serration
Blade material - ATS-34 (flat ground)
Handle material - titanium

Hope this helps.

Dan,

Thanks for cleaning up the jpeg Spark linked for me (thanks Spark!). I used a Logitech Scanman 2000 to grab it off the old Cutlery Shoppe 3-94 flyer... it needed some help

!

From what Sal says about exotic hardwoods it would seem that our best bets are going to be plain stainless and abalone. Onyx appears to be a solid third possibility. Blade style makes no real difference to me frankly. The other issue is a Bladeforums.com cloissone emblem... Kevin (Spark) what are your thoughts here?

Guys, I'm all for whatever you want, but my personal preferences lean towards "Keep It Simple"

Stainless, Abalone, or Onyx are all fine with me, as long as we can keep the final cost down for you guys. As for what's on it, that also depends, but a BladeForums.com logo would be pretty sweet.

Ti mini Police necklace?!?! Gasp!! Sal, you are full of surprises. Another to add on the want list.

L8r,
Nakano

Just my 2p but I reakon a stainless steel model with the Bladeforums logo on would be great.

I think it is time for a bladeforums project of some sort. How about a nice spydie pin or necklace? Now that would be something to have for the next Blade show!
I like the idea of having something with the bladeroums logo on it. How about it Sal?
What do the rest of you think?

Regards,

Tom
