Sal: why no "assisted opening" or "flipper" Spydercos?

Why should Spyderco complicate the most foolproof opening system ever devised? My thumb in the Spyderhole is the only assist I need. Leave the spring loaded kiddie toys to other makers.

Here's an excerpt of a quote for you to ponder, Paul.

...If you would like to be closely associated with Spyderco, which we greatly appreciate, it would be our wish that you consider leaving shiny footprints rather than hostile feelings, where Spyderco is concerned.

thanx much for your cooperation and kind understanding.

hmm I guess I will go against everyone and say I would be interested in a Spyderco Flipper. Might be pretty cool actually.

To be fair he didn't say they were poorly made and not quality products. It might not have been the best description but I will 'play' with my knives many times when I'm bored. And they are usually the ones that are easy to flip open and closed which AO and flippers accomplish well.

Edit: I'm not big on the AO knives but I agree that a flipper could be neat. But I doubt it will happen since it goes in the face of the trademarked opening method Spyderco is known for.

I wouldn't want my thumb in the spydie hole when the A/O kicks in. I like flippers, and I like A/Os probably more than I like the spydie hole, but I wouldn't like the ideal of a spyderco with a flipper, the hole takes up a lot of pocket width as is, and the flipper would just add on to the width, making the knife very obtrusive when you reached into your pocket. How some people can only see the cons, and usually stretch them out, on the A/O just shows to me a lack of experience, or a closed mind.

Just an unnecessary slam that doesn't leave a "Shiny footprint". :(

This topic has been discussed several times before and I believe that Sal has come on at least once and said that this isn't an area or niche that Spyderco is interested in entering. They're happy with the manual opening knives that they produce now and will leave AO and flippers alone.

Personally, I love AO and flippers but agree with those that don't think they would add anything to the Spyderco line.

i think they are all great, thumbstud spydiehole, flipper, even AO

they are all just different and each one works best in a specific scenario. :)

I've grown tired of assited blades, a flipper would be neat to see tho, specialy with the spyder hole still intact for both opening methods.

The old Viele design actually had a bit of the ribbed thumb grip that protruded above the handle in such a way you could pop it open with your thumb. Nice knives.

Let me begin by saying, Sal, keep making knives how you see fit, you're obviously doing some things right. I love the Spydie hole, most of the steel is amazing, they feel/function flawlessly and look cool!!!!

I was a Spyderco FREAK (only blade I'd carry/buy) from Jan. 31 2004 (the day I got my first Spyderco, a Dragonfly w/ pe AUS-8 blade, which still sees use:)) -Feb. 2010 (the day I got my first Hinderer, the 3.5" XM-18 Flipper). I had never cared for assisted open knives and I never really tried a flipper before the XM. The XM-18 replaced my ZDP Endura right away. In the three months I have carried and used it I have found several benefits to the "flipper knob" itself. I don't know what I'd do without it now. ;)

Basically, what I'm trying to say is I too would go for a Spyderco flipper................with a nice thick blade! :D

A Sal/Rick collaboration knife would be a dream come true for me...........not that either guy needs to do anything to make their knives better!

How dare you question the all mighty bug in the spyderco forum!! Don't you know that's #1 on the bladeforums comandments !!! " thou shalt not insult spyderco or thou be flamed" LOL !!! Blasphemy !!!

I purchase everything Spyderco makes in the States. I'd therefore absolutely purchase a flipper made here. I've only tried a flipper once at a show--a Brian Tighe. I couldn't afford it--but with just a few seconds of handling, I couldn't wrap my brain around it. AS I understand it, the flipper works by lever action--a short spine protrudes from the spine side, pressure applied to that lever overcomes some mechanism that keeps the knife closed while also deploying the blade--no springs other than lock mechanism? I'd be up for that.

I agree...I have all of the above and enjoy them all.

Please Sal: a Flipper on a Military or Para! One fact that none of y'all have mentioned is that Spyderco does make autos, right? So what's the difference! I just want to give you more of my cash.

Thanks,

Charles

That is my recollection. Can't find the link, but I believe that is almost word for word what Sal said.

An AO Spyderco doesn't really appeal to me, and the flipper idea is interesting...but is it really necessary?
I have been temped to try an Auto Spyderco...kind of think they would do it right.

As far as an A.O. or a flipper goes.....
With the silky smooth operation of my Manix, I can have it out of my pocket and the blade deployed in about the same time it takes to do the same with an A.O. knife.
I'm not knocking A.O.'s in anyway, in fact I have three of them, I'm just saying.....
I honestly don't see the need to add one to their line-up, of course this is just my .02 YMMV :D

And the Spyderco Citadel doesn't fall under the "spring loaded" category? Just asking.
Are you under the impression that I think Spyderco's decision to make automatics was a good idea? If so, you are mistaken.
