Saw someone with what was obviously a sebenza in their pocket the other day and struck up a conversation about it since that isn't exactly an everyday occurrence. Was a very nice man who turned out to be personal friends with Chris. Knives sure do make nice conversation starters! He also happens to own a high end cutting board company, and what do you know, I am in the market for a new board so I will be giving him some business in the near future.

Ever seen a stranger carrying a sebenza and say hello?

that's awesome. no sebenzas but while at work i saw someone carrying a spyderco and struck up conversation with them. i don't see much knife carry out here in so-cal compared to back in florida where i grew up, so it's nice to see a fellow knife lover and have small chit chat

Never saw a stranger carrying one but I do have a story for ya. I told this one here already but I will share it with you. I work on an oil rig and have been on the same rig for about 5 years working with the same group of guys the entire time. One day we got a new wellhead in and I was trying to get the plastic wrapping off it and it was being a pain in the ass. Anyway, the consultant we have is this 65 year old bastard who I noticed always carries a knife sheath on his belt but I never seen what kind of knife he has. So I am getting pissed off with this wrapping and just as I was getting off the deck of the truck to get a blade he walks over and opens the sheath and hands me a large regular Sebenza. I've been working with this man for 5 years and I never knew he had this with him.

Did he have a big moustache and a NY accent ? I think I know who that was, I think a few of us here have his cutting boards too. :p:thumbup:

I've also never seen someone carrying a Sebenza here in San Diego, but it's nice to know they are out there. Keep your eyes open for me...I will also most likely be wearing my "Think Twice, Cut Once" shirt. Would love to meet another CRK fan.

My GIRLFRIEND ran into a guy the other day & noticed his Sebenza?? She doesn't even seem that interested in knives! But she struck up a conversation with him about it. Needless to say he was pretty surprised to have a young lady call his knife by its name!

LOL i left diego a few months ago, but had a small insingo in my front right pocket nearly every day. Unfortunately, as I'm sure Haze'll tell ya, once i got to NYC, i had to start carrying it in the pocket. Poor little Wharnie never gets any air..

LOL, sounds like a challenge. My wife and I go to Coronado a lot. Keep your eyes peeled!

That's a bummer. I need to get me an Insingo.

Sebenzas here in South Africa are few and far between. Most people that buy them dont use them since they reach around the $500 mark for a plain Jane after import taxes etc. so they end up with a knife in the Safe.

However! I did meet a game ranger years ago (when I just got into knives) that had a old beat up Sebenza. I wish I knew back then what it was.

Yesterday I was having a tire replugged and talked to an officer that carried a Kershaw though.

Never. Closest I came was convincing a guy I used to work with to buy one - he ended up buying a plain jane small.

If I do see people carrying, it's usually a Kershaw clip - so I assume it was a Wallyworld purchase.

I gave a small regular to my good friend and to my father-in-law some years back. I bet we're the only three people in our fair city and surrounding counties with Sebenzas. Never seen another.

Prof.

Never spotted another carrying a CRK however I do look if I see a guy has something clipped to their pocket or belt. This is actually how I got started collecting knives.

Back in 08' I had just moved back to my native land of New Hampshire. There was this incredibly destructive ice storm that just worked the whole area over; my buddy didn't have power for two weeks! During the chaos it occurred to me the usefulness of a multitool in an electric-free world, so I went out and bought a Leatherman Skeletool EX. I wanted something useful but not overly jammed with tools.

A few months later I'm waiting on a table of two middle-aged guys. I notice one of them has two Leatherman sheaths on his belt. We strike up a conversation; I showed him my skeletool, he showed me the wave and charge tti hes carrying. Turns out hes a leatherman rep! So I wait the table, they eat, they pay. I'm in the kitchen and my manager comes up to me telling me that there's someone up front for me. It's the Leatherman rep! He hands me a catalog and what was to be my first real folder, a Leatherman crater c33x! In my six years of serving this was my favorite tip.

That got me started on collecting knives and is ultimately why I carry a Sebenza every day. So yeah, it's worth striking up conversations with other cutlery-minded individuals.

I've never seen a Sebenza but I always seem to notice when someone is carrying. It's silly but it makes me feel like Sherlock Holmes or something because I notice and identify something that a lot of people normally wouldn't.
