"Every knife (William) Scagel made was completely by hand and without modern tools such as a grinder or buffer; his Fruitport shop was powered off a gasoline engine from a Cadillac automobile!!" (Wikipedia!)

I have never held a real one in my hands! They say Bill Scagel was a wizard with steel, and forged tough, edge-holding blades! He was born in 1873, and died in 1963, and made his last knife in 1962!! A real, full life IMO!!
Bill Shirley (Northwoods!) loved Scagel knives, especially the rare folders!! Some are known to have changed hands for tens of thousands of dollars! Wanting to share the joy, he produced reproductions for many years, many made at Queen!!
I vaguely remember Bill Shirley and Bill Howard at an older Queen show, intently in conversation!! I wonder what they were talking about???
Original Scagel; Primitive, crude, but a useful tool to be proud of!!

Factory reproduction; 3 3/8", a simple knife reflecting the spirit of an original!! Scagel new age 1.jpg Scagel new age 2.jpg
The through-pull is very useful!! You can thumbnail the blade open, left or right handed, or pinch it!!

Great idea for a thread, Charlie!
My one and only. KSF made these after they acquired the Scagel brand name. This is the Fruitport model, named for the town where Scagel had his shop, Fruitport, Michigan. They did a nice job on these.

Hey Duncan!! Let's see a pic!!:)

Nice "tribute", A Arathol !! Who made it??o_O

Hey there Charlie- hate to block up a great Thread with an unrelated Knife - I am quite concerned about people seeing this Knife and then finding myself inundated with Requests to make them a Knife- I wont be surprised if in the future someone finds this Knife- relates it back to me in Bladeforums- and bang...instant Scagel :D:eek::oops:

New Zealand Rimu Wood Handle!

lol - I wanted a little Fixed Blade Pocket Knife - now I find this is getting used in the Kitchen so much- My lovely Daughter bought me a Knife making course for a Day for Christmas- just an amazing present- now I have a Knife for life that I made, Heat Treated etc!
Pretty darned crude, but I am afraid it has sparked something, mmmmm now where was that Forge foe sale?....:(

Charlie, great idea for a thread and enjoyed seeing the pictures of the original one, that would definitely be a grail for any collection.

A Grand Daddy Barlow I have that was made by Queen, very high quality with great stag.

Charlie, you or Paul will have to help me on these 2, I got one from you and Paul gifted me the other. I remember that they were originally a 2 blade Scagel that was modified into 2 single blades by a former Blade Forums member from Australia but I can't remember too much more. I like how the one with the arrowhead shield looks like the original in your post.

Great ones Gary, Christian and John!!!

Campbellclanman Campbellclanman , Those two knives were actually constructed in Australia by an alterer/mechanic guy whose name escapes me!!
I like your own-made knife!!:)

"Lend a man a knife, and he can eat breakfast!! Give a man knife-making lessons, and he can eat for life!!":D

Ive been after one of those (dogwoods?) for a long time . I called Derrick about it long ago.He said he might have something in the works but nothing came of it . I heard later, that Derrick sold the Scagel rights to Bark river .
I was fortunate to pick up one fruitport clip from Derrick .I remember thinking they were priced very high at that time . By the time I got there , the smooth bone clips were sold out and only a few stags . The warnclillfs stuck around awhile longer . The smooth bone clip fruitport has been dodging me for a long time . Knife collecting is fun

I dont own a scagel but I do have a fond memory of your generosity! It was my first rendezvous, and a fella brought his young son up to your table at GEC and you kindly offered him a knife from a box of knives which contained a scagel! All in exchange for a coin so that the friendship would not be severed in true knife gifting tradition. I believe this young fella came up to you the year after with coin in hand ready for another. :D of course we all joked later on how many years hed appear with a coin in hand for good ole Charlie not knowing just exactly how hed be a part of knife history. I do hope he joins us on the porch some day.
