Think the title of the thread sums it up. I would love to see some detailed shots of some great knives. I think Kevin will start us off

Looking forward to seeing this thread go.

Thanks Jeff :)

I made some scans of some of my knives a few years ago. You can really get some high detail, and I really like that there is no distortion due to the angle of the picture since there id no angle.

In these last two I wanted to show the effect of horizontal vs vertical positioning in the scanner. Look how flat the bolster looks when the knife was turned 90 degrees from "East/West" orientation to "North/South". Also the color is not as true to life either. Not sure why this is, or if this is universal to scanners, but something to watch for. Even turning the knife at a 45 degree angle to horizontal will have an effect.

Wow, this is awsome. Got to try and hook my printer/scanner up now. Thanks guys, some real beauties

Doug,

Scanners have very shallow depth of field, so all I did was take a cardboard puzzle box top and sit it over the knife. It is about 3" deep and grey in color. I am going to try putting different color paper inside the box to see what happens. Thanks to Stu for the tip on adjusting the knife, I just sat it however. Thanks to Jake and other's that have done this for years that gave me the inspiration to try it. It sure shows detail.

Stu, I found I could get the color CLOSE adjusting white balance, but these PDF files are not RAW :)

I printed several pictures and would tape them inside the box lid I used. They end up a little out of focus due to the depth of field, but that looks pretty good depending on the subject.
I will post a few of those tonight if I have time.

About depth of field. Some scanners have almost none.
I have a "nice" scanner and it has no depth of field but it reproduces extremely accurate images. But with so little depth that an open blade will be horribly out of focus.
I have an old (like 13 year old) cheep scanner that has excellent depth of field but ends up with those "burnt" looking bolsters.
If anyone has a make/model recommendation with good depth of field and true to life type optics that would be great.

Hm... just beautiful pics. A lot of details. I don´t have a scanner. But the scales look really great when made in scanner. Thanks for this nice thread.

Keep your scanner pics going, folks :D

That's a good way to do it Kevin. I've done a few scans but find them a pain in the ole keister - for me anyway. When I used to have a "stand alone" printer it was pretty easy as it was right on my desk but the combination printer, scanner, fax, I have now is on the other side of the room and not convenient to use.

waynorth (charlie) has used scans for years and does a great job with them.

Interesting points from Stu.

Thanks Ed, Waynorth has some of the BEST IMHO :)

Stu,

I don't know if you missed it but you can get the color very accurate adjusting exposure and white balance.

I am done playing for now :)

It really is interesting to see how many scratches are on a new in tube GEC

Sam,

You know I like to use my knives just as much as you!

That knife will have its chance too :p

Kevin

Thanks Jeff :)

It has been hiding with the rest of my "to be used at a later date" knives :D
