Scary Opening.

Most of us knife lovers take it for granted but I've noticed if you open any folder one-handed it freaks Joe Average out. I was at a funeral wake and they needed to cut up a plastic bottle, I quickly whipped out my Leatherman Charge and thumbed out the blade. Seeing and hearing the blade click open, one woman jumped back and exclaimed "Flick Knife"(switchblade). When around sheeple these days I use two hands because we all know "Flick Knives" are deadly.

Dont live in fear of sheeple - flick away (where legal).

Maybe go MUAHAHAHAHAA! at the same time.

You should see the looks (and gasps) I get when my Emerson Super Commander snaps out of my pocket. Hilarious.

Social awareness is just as important as any other type of awareness.

Really makes life go swimmingly when you take into account, at least a little, how you fit in with your environment.

I've had this experience many times myself. It is always frustrating, but I try and open my knives using two hands when in public.

Had guy look at me like I was a serial killer or something when I pulled out my Spyderco Dragonfly to open a package while walking across the post office parking lot.

The genius in your response is the simplicity of it

I know what you mean. I guess my Kershaw Leek, one of the few production knives that I own, is extremely deadly and should only be handled by highly trained professional ninjas!

:p

It depends on circumstances ;)

While doing sheep oblation this March, I waved my Emerson Commander. Actually I didn't cut anything till that event. And butchers were impressed, not scared though -- they carry and use knives themselves; offered me 20$ for the knife, you know they can't imagine the real price tag.

Can you blame them really though? We live in a society where everything is pre-cut up and packaged with layers and layers of wasteful plastic so people don't have to use or carry knives anymore. We need to get back to carrying knives and reducing packaging!

There is an ever increasing population of sheep that are afraid of everything, while I won't intentionally antagonize them, I won't adopt their cookiepuss ways either. If I need a tool, I open it as designed, if it's to hot to carry conceal, or I plan on physical activity, I open carry my handgun lawfully, I don't allow my boy to act up in public, I hold doors open for others, respect women and offer a helping hand when needed, shake hands firmly, and always look people in the eye when speaking to them. This is the way of life I was brought up in and will pass on to my family, it's an honest and noble way to live despite some being intimidated by superior men acting as men should instead of sniveling sheep.

I don't worry about it a lot. I don't flick knives open, most of mine use thumbstuds or thumb holes and can be opened relatively slowly, but some of them still have that big click when the lock activates. When around people I might open the knife down at my side so they can't see or hear it as well, then bring it up and do my cutting. With an assisted knife I just open it, maybe down at my side. If I am really worried about people nearby I will use 2 hands to open an assisted knife so it doesn't open as fast, and I will turn my body to shield what I am doing from their eyes.

If people stare or make comments, I cut what I'm going to cut, casually put the knife back in my pocket, and ignore them.

I started using my Folts minimalist to open most packages. It has the opposite effect of Emerson wave action. It makes people say "aww, how cute".

Two hand opening makes people the least concerned, it seems.
Unless you're holding something that needs to be cut; then one-hand opening seems to make sense to the surrounding folks.

Or if ninja-zombie-werewolves attack...I guess that would excuse a quick opening. :)

THIS.^^^^

NOT this.

I like to keep a low profile and not draw too much attention to myself. That doesn't mean that I'll go out of my way to please other people when they're being irrational or that I won't stand up for my rights. I just don't like drama.

Anyway, I'm lucky that most places I spend time at are gun and knife friendly. But for those occasions when a large folder might raise a few eye brows, I always have a SAK or small Leatherman PS4 Squirt on me. Those never get negative coments.
